View Full Version : Do we really have to play the campaign on VH?

Sheesh, auto-calc is merciless! I have to fight the most uninteresting and unconsequential battles that I know I'll win, though the auto-calc will give me defeat, or a victory with massive casualties on my side and few on the enemy's.

I wonder, when 0.8 comes out and I start a new campaign, can I choose Campaign difficulty Medium instead of Very Hard? Or are the side-effects too great and VH is indeed the only way to play the game, even if it forces you to fight battles you don't want to fight? :shame: :skull:

Very Hard makes the AI more Agressive If I remember. It also gives it a free 10 000 mnai per turn.

VH is much more intersting in the long run, at the begining is hard as hell, but once you stabilize, theres no problem...if you play in Easy, after ten minutes of fighting the game becomes dull..i recomend VH/VH=)

Im also a VH/VH sort of fan, but i have to admit that with some civilization it is really difficult, while KH have problem only with the successors (Kleurichoi Agema, and Pezetharoi), Parthian horse archers are useless if they dont have at last 4 or 5 chevrons... but im agree that when you are stabilized, it is really fun, actually im having a really bad time, but still fun with sweboz (with KH), while my Pahlava campaign is going to be a sort of gueriilla cause i cant afford to fight enemys huge army...

Anyway remember that VH add +7attack/+7defence to the enemy, so a enemy unit that have 14 attack 14 armour, 4 shield and 10 def (for example) could be a sort of "borg" unit (invincible) on the battlefield, im referring to the nasty ptolemaics Kleurichoi Agema (i dream that damned unit even in the night...)

pheraphs H is a better compromise, but my stupid pride dont allow me to turn back on H...

I think with 0.8, H will be quite enough. In my testing, with factions such as Hayasdan or Pontus it's quite hard to not lose a game on Hard, especially the first years when you have no army, no cash and everyone's attacking you :)
Also, we strongly recommend Medium diff in battles. The stats are carefully calculated, and adding extra bonuses for AI might just mess up things.

Does playing on "Hard" difficulty give the Ai extra money on each turn?
As on Very Hard, the AI gains 10.000 extra in cash between each turn.

here they are from what i remember:

Strat Map:

H: 5000$ enemy cash bonus
VH: 10000& enemy cash bonus

Battle Map

Easy: -4/-4 enemy att/def
M: no bonus
H: +4/+4 enemy att/def
Vh: +7/+7 enemy att/def

dont remember if they obtain also a morale bonus...

He's talking about the autocalc. I've definetly noticed the same thing, though I belive EB gives enemy generals command star bonuses? I think this is what makes the autocalc so merciless, and I agree, especialy when my empire gets large, the game gets to tedious to enjoy anymore. The command star bonuses are great for other reasons, but for fights where my army is truly superior, and if I play out the battle I'll anihalate the enemy, most of the time I'd much rather autocalc the battle.

i play on medium because of the rebel problem. when they spawn they just stand there and do nothing instead of attacking your towns, whereas on hard/vh they will, if i remember correctly.

once 0.8 comes along i'll turn the random rebel spawn off and play on a higher difficulty.

It would have been nice for EB to bring back the auto_win cheat for those instances where the enemy army is miniscule or where you have a CTD after an heroic victory. I understand the issue of cheating, but still.

Unless there was a scripting issue with it.

I would LOVE to play VH/M. But since the AI doesn't know how to fight, especially with a phalanx. I play VH/VH so the AI has a shot at winning a battle.

so the recommended difficulties levels might change for 0.8?

I do have an auto_win script set up to use against rebels, heres a good guide to setting up a script so you can keep using it over and over.

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=46738

Just use "console_command auto_win attacker" instead of what the tutorial says. You can then only use it to attack them, so I just use small city garrison units to disperse of the constant stacks of many star general rebels that show up.

I dont use it with my generals, seems cheap they get the free uber win.

IIRC, "Medium" was always recommended for battles, and with 1.5 AI it starts to make some sense. As for campaign map, well, "Hard" is the setting I use for more difficult factions, but that's just my personal preference.

I've cranked the difficulty down a bit for my latest muck around game (I'm just fiddling with a variety of factions at present, not playing anyone seriously). The random rebel spawns were extremely irritating on VH/M so I went to M/M and they are a lot less ridiculous. I do miss the occassional stack tromping up to my settlements (since these are things that are interesting to deal with) but I am glad that I seem to have less tiny random clumps clogging up my road network.
