Guys, I have an "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile" Graphics Card

Whenever I try to start a campaign, It shows the "Pause menu" and then crashes to desktop

I am using MTW 1.0 :sweatdrop:

Any help is appreciated.

Can you provide any more details? Which OS and any other specs of the laptop? I'm guessing this may be the 945GM chipset, which means the GMA 950 is your graphics chip (integrated into the motherboard chipset)? If so then drivers are going to be the issue. I'd advise you to forget about trying to find newer or older drivers, but try everything else suggested in this thread that seems relevant. If that fails then you may be out of luck. Intel graphics pose one of the biggest problems for MTW. Some can be resolved with older drivers, but the 945 series chips don't have any drivers that are old enough to be of use.

OS is XP SP2
Intel Core 2 T5300 @ 1.73
Intel Core 2 T5300 @ 1.73
Ram 1 GB

Oh and Yes, its 945GM.

That means I shouldn't bother messing with drivers right? :shame:

Well you can try older drivers if any are available. But installing an older driver is tricky. You will have to download driver cleaner pro (the free version) and then uninstall your old drivers from the control panel and after this run driver cleaner pro to clean off any remnants of the Intel graphics .dll and .inf files. You will then and only then, need to install the driver. As I said I seriously doubt you'll find older drivers for that chipset and any older drivers you do find probably won't be old enough to make a difference.

Realistically, your best bet is to either run the game on another PC that is more suitable or try one of the newer TW games. You might also want to try Shogun: Total War, but if MTW doesn't run then 9 times out of 10 STW won't run either.

Sorry I couldn't be of much more help, though I have problems of my own trying to run the game, so you're not alone.

Please help me in my journey to get Medieval Total War - Viking Invasion working.

At first, the game wasn't running. I inserted the "skipcredits.txt" to the program directory, and made it to the main menu.

The main menu was all black and flickering, with me unable to click any buttons. I disabled Catalyst AI and restarted MTWVI, got the menu to work.

Started a new campaign - then quickly CTD'd.
Any recommendations? Here are some details on my specs to help.

Further Details:
I run Vista x64

Quick Battle, Custom Battle and Historical Campaigns + Battles work, but Campaign Tutorial and Single-Player Campaigns do not.

Look at the last post in this thread: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=79500

Have you tried this yet? If not then it might be the solution. Let us know how you get on. Also how long is the campaign map/battle load screen taking? Is there a delay before the red bar starts to move, if so how long is the delay?

I used the fix you mentioned, solution did not work. I assume this is because I have the Battle Collection and the fix is for the Gold Edition.

So far, all the fixes I've tried have failed, whether it be buttons, .exe's, graphics card problems (have replaced 3 graphics cards), drivers, mods, whatever the case may be, it still crashes. I'm on an AMD chipset with an ATI Radeon card.

Can anyone help me with this problem? It's not a new problem, in fact quite a few people have it.

Basically, when my virus program is enabled, every time I enter the campaign, or a battle, it will load to about halfway, then give me the 'Fatal graphics error' message, telling me to 'lower my settings' (even though I have a good computer, an XP... and the game had been working the day before!)

When my virus program is disabled, I get an 'Unspecified error' message, or sometimes it will just CTD.

I don't think it's anything to do with overheating, and I've deleated the pref.cfg file as someone suggested, but it doesn't seem to work. I don't think it's the graphics card either, but just in case; I've got a Radeon X1300.

Any suggestions?

@Sebbers357, I believe you're referring to M2TW, this thread is for MTW. I would advise that you make a new thread specific to the issue you are having.

There is no difference between the battle collection and gold edition. I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. You are running Vista of course and this may be part of the problem. I have a Radeon HD 3650 an AMD chipset and an Athlon 64 X2, and the game runs without CTD. The only problem I have is that the load bar takes about 4 minutes to start moving, this in itself makes it intolerable.

If you can try dual booting with XP that might offer you some solution. Sorry I can be of no further assistance.

Tried booting with XP, Windows 2000, and 98 (I have discs of all these lying around the house)

Doesn't work. Still. CTD every time. On 2000 and 98 I wasn't able to load battles either.

Hmmm... I don't think there are windows 98 drivers for that card?? When you tried XP, which driver version did you install? You may also need to install the chipset drivers with XP (though probably not with Vista).

Doesn't matter. I fixed it: For some reason when I loaded the game from the desktop icon, it crashed, so I have to load it by reinserting the disc. :2thumbsup:

Odd, though you do need the disc in the drive when running the game due to copy protection. Now, assuming you're still active here, what antivirus program were you running?

-Mods: Posts #259, 263 and 264 to a new thread perhaps?

Hi everybody,

this is my first post, I always read a lot of posts when I have a problem with the PC and I never made a question, because I found the answers in the other´s replies, but in this case I´m not sure about what is generating this issue!!
I´ll tell you my problem with the Medieval II Total War Game.

First of all I installed the game, but when it was finishing the installation of the 2nd DVD an error appears on the screen:

"C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\animations\pack.dat doesn´t match the file in the setup´s .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor."

Anyway the installation continued and finished.

I played the game many times without errors playing with the Holy Roman Empire, but I found a way to enable the others regions in the game modifying the following text file: "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\descr_strat.txt", because I wanted to play with Scotland :laugh4:.

So I started the campaign perfectly but I don´t know why in a part of the game while is running the turn of the other regions (commonly when it´s running the turn of Rebels and The Papal States) the game suffers a CTD.

I tried everything and nothing worked

These are the things that I tried to solve this problem without good news:

Remove completely the nVidia drivers from my PC and updated to the newest version ( I had a Ge-Force 6600 GT DDR3 with 128 MB)

Remove completely the game (only saving the "save" folder in another location) and reinstalled all again copying the entire 2nd DVD in the C: drive (just in case that the problem was the DVD)

Modify the graphic card configuration, but I think that this problem is generated due another source, because in the past it worked perfectly with the highest configuration (I tried also changed to the lowest configuration and disable the sound)

In the Event Viewer from Windows nothing appears, but yes in the game´s folder. The system.log shows the following lines:

Welcome Jimius,

Unfortunately the problems you're having are due to the game not installing correctly in the first place. It may be that the second DVD is dirty. Try cleaning it and then uninstall the game and reinstall again:

Uninstall M2TW.
Delete M2TW folder and all its contents.
Delete Medieval and Sega registry entries
Empty TEMP folder
Reboot.
Install M2TW
Patch to 1.2.

If you want multiplayer games compatibile with the Kingdoms expansion then install patch v1.3 - otherwise just sitck with 1.2. If you have the Kingdoms expansion then just install that followed by the Kingdoms patch (v1.5 I believe).
If that does not solve it then you may have a damaged or faulty disc. If it it does not appear damaged then try taking it back to where you bought it and get it exchanged. If it does appear damaged, you can still try taking it back but the shop assistant may comment on any visible damage to the disc.

Also this is posted in the wrong thread. This thread refers to the first Medieval - Total War game and not the second. Do not make another thread now, the Moderator for this forum will move your post to a separate thread.

Please try that which I have suggested and then get back to us.

Hello!
I'm trying to get Medieval Total War to work on Toshiba Satellite l300-129 with Windows XP Professional SP2. I'm unable to start campaign but on the other hand I can play quick, custom and historical battles.I supose that the main problem is my video card - Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family which is as I presume terrible, surprisingly though Rome Total War works fine and without problems.
Is there a solution?
Any help appreciated!

I had the same problem with my Mobile Intel 4500 MHD on Vista. I fixed it by increasing the Strategy map resolution to 1024x768. In main menu of the game go to Options->Video. Hopefully it will solve your problem, too.

Very well...after hours of looking through the official MTW forums and these here...I am desperate and hope I can get an answer that I have overlooked.

I am running vista 32 bit version with an ati radeon x1270 integrated video card. I got MTW out of some dusty corner, installed and applied the 1.1 patch.

Installing goes fine, intro screens go fine, battle tutorial goes fine...then, when I try to do a campaign tutorial or start a campaign, it goes to the loading bar...the red bar does NOT start to move, instead I crash back to my desktop...alas

I've tried changing the compatibility mode (98/me, 2000 AND xp sp2), I've tried all combinations of resolutions in the game, I've tried changing my own desktop resolution...all with the same result.

I tried to do the button thingie (should this work for MWT? I thought that was only for MTW VI, am I right?) but didn't work either...

I'm running out of options but would love to play again. Just finished up Shogun a couple of times and would love to continue in my "time travel" of total war games...

Hope you have a solution I overlooked!

The button fix is your answer here. You will need to install that. It's the same file and in the same place for all version of MTW from 1.0 through 2.01

If that still doesn't work try lessening the amount of memory you have allocated to the onboard graphics in the BIOS setup. I reduced mine (integrated Radeon X1200) to 32MB and it speeded up the loading bar significantly. Also ensure that you're running the game at 1024*768 resolution or under.

Thanks for your fast reply!

I have tried the button swap for a second time...and it didn't work :(

I can't change anything that has to do with video setup in my bios...might have to do with gateway's restrictions on it. Setting my desktop to 1024x800 did not work either...I'm starting to lose hope now...I. Want. To. Play...I'm thinking about spamming the hell out of CA...but that probably won't work either :(

Are you sure you're placing the button files in the correct folder?

If that doesn't work then older drivers are your best bet. Can you find which ATI driver version you're running?

Rex Solomon

I'm placing the buttons in the folder: "Medieval - Total war / campmap / buttons". Then I take the buttons from the dl and place them in there.

My current drivers are:

Driver Packaging Version 8.433-071109a-056313C-Gateway
Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
2D Driver Version 7.01.01.704
2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Class/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0540
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.7059
Catalyst® Control Center Version 2007.1109.2138.38670

Hope there's still something I can do :)

I'm using 8.421.0.0. This is an older version. Unfortunately because you have Vista and because there are no older drivers for the IGP for Vista 64 - you're out of luck. The only thing I can advise is reverting to XP and trying that (not guaranteed either though) or try running the game on another PC.

Well no that won't make much difference. The Vista drivers are fairly recent. If you can install XP on that machine it might be worth a try with older drivers, but again there's no guarantees.

Heya, i am new to the forum too (found it via google "graphic problem medieval total war") and i hoped ya could help me out too.My problem lies both in the battles AND the campaing, battles seem to be soo wrong as for graphics, units cross the buttons,if i order them to go in front they run behind or somewhere completely irrelevant to where i sent them and i cant targer any unit through the map, only by the buttons.Seems like units are set in an actually different resolution then i see them or something like that :S As for campaing its not that hard to explain, everytime i start any sort of campaing i am thrown to windows desktop without a word of error reporting..

My system is Intel core 2 duo @ 2.66 ,2gb ram,32-bit system,NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GTS aaaand i got windows vista..

Counting on ya guys,Medieval is an absolutely great game, its sad that i cant play it anymore :(

Greetings everyone,

Having read the entire thread (and about half a dozen similar ones in other places), I have just about given up on getting my MTW to work - alas, I have the dreaded Intel chipset on my old Dell (945GM to be specific). Funny thing is that the driver version is 6.14.0010.4446, dating back to December 2005, and the newest version I can find online is from 2007, so I guess that's not much help. Tried all the skipcredits, resolution and buttons fixes, but none worked. Oh, and AGP texture acceleration? My chipset doesn't even support it.

Just in case somebody does have an older driver (or one that works), I'll gladly take it, but I am not holding out much hope for that. Seems that I won't be playing this game until maybe I change my laptop (for one that does not have the blasted Intel chipset, :furious3:).

PS: Worst thing is, when I got this machine, MTW worked fine, but I seriously messed up my windows at one point and decided to reinstall. Used all the drivers that came with it, but the game would not work (CTD on trying to load campaign map, the usual it seems :surrender:).

I might have some good news in this regard. I used to have an Nvidia 8800GT, and I had the UI problem as expected. However, I recently upgraded to an Nvidia GTX 260 and just now tried reinstalling MTW.

It works. Battles and all. (Well, I had to do that one fix with the Campmap/buttons files, but still...)

I only just got it working about 15 minutes ago, so I can't tell whether it crashes or anyhting else over the long term, but my optimism remains high.

I really love this game and back when I was stuck with my shitty old computer MTW was the only thing that kept me from destroying the machine. I had no intention of quitting MTW when I got my new Toshiba laptop but I ran into this problem. Everything in the game works fine except the campaign map. I click new campaign, pick the options (any options), and start the game. The loading screen comes up and as soon as it's done loading it goes to the pause screen. When I click resume game the exact same thing happens again. Here are my specs:

Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Display Memory: 1759 MB
Dedicated Memory: 128 MB
Shared Memory: 1631 MB
Current Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Driver Name: igdumd64.dll,igd10umd64.dll
Driver Version: 7.15.0010.1502 (English)

The driver is from 6/12/2008 because it's Toshiba's custom driver and they apparently never update. I'm using a Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit with 4 GBs of RAM running at 2GHz.

I can't find a way to change the AA options on the graphics card and Toshiba doesn't have any older drivers compatible to 64 bit Vista or my L305 model. I tried just about every desktop-game resolution combination and 16 bit color. I've also been all over these forums looking for a way to fix the problem so this is more of a post of desperation. Please help.

Currently in exam session with all the sleepless nights and nervousness around, I am trying to think of something(s) more pleasant. Recently, I seriously started thinking of purchasing MTW and playing it again. I mean MTW/VI this classic of classics and who knows I can move to STW one day...(I've never played STW, maybe it will be good idea to give it a shot). Graphics really do not bother me.

After incidentally facing an weird thread about graphics and the inability to properly play campaigns because of too good PC and Graphics card we go to the question... Can my Asus laptop face this challenge?

The prameters:

Computer: 1.86 GHz, 896 MB of RAM; 148 GB of Memory

Graphics: ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, 256 MB

OS: Windows XP

Candidate for installment: Medieval Totalwar Gold (MTW + MTW/VI)

Since I am familiar with the CTD problem, I wonder if this PC is ready to handle MTW. Or I will simply buy something that I will not use.

hello everyone,

Nvidia control panel > manage 3D settings > global settings > extension limit:

Extension limit indicates whether the driver extension string has been trimmed for compatibility with particular applications. Some older applications cannot process long extension strings and will crash if extensions are unlimited. turning this option ON got medieval running on windows 7 64bit with nvidia geforce 8600gt newest drivers.

Hi all,

I have been tirelessly trying to get Medieval: Total War to install and run on my laptop. As many have explained, I can install and load any battle just fine, but when attempting to start a new campaign or run the campaign tutorial, the game immediately proceeds to the pause menu when the red loading bar is full (the bottom 1/4 of the screen also flickers after going to the pause menu). If I move the mouse in any way, I get a CTD.

My machine specs are:

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.67GHz)
2MB RAM
Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset

I have seen others in this thread mention that they were able to get the game to run successfully with this crappy Intel graphics adapter. However, I have been uninstalling and reinstalling several older drivers (all the way back to 6.xx.xx.xxx) with no luck.

If anyone has managed to get this working, can you shed some light on the driver version used or any other tips that helped to get it working?

Thanks!

Did you try the button fix? If so and it still won't load the campaign map, without crashing, then there's probably no solution. Newer Intel chips are a known problem with MTW.

The extension limit tweak sounds interesting. I would advise that those with Nvidia 8xxx and 9xxx series cards having problems with the units not going where you want them to in battles, try this method and report back.

Phew, this really is a game that you hate to love.

I got this game running fairly easy on my previous system, but when I reinstalled on my upgraded hardware is was one CTD after another and even complete spontaneous reboots.

It seems that I now finally have got it stable (hopefully permanent) and since I mainly used info from this thread to get there, it seems only fair to post my current setup. Maybe someone else can benefit. Oh, and everyone who invested time in figuring these solutions out thanks a lot! (really)

First my system config, I have:

AMD64 X2 5600+
2GB RAM
RADEON HD4670 (with 1GB)
Windows XP Professional SP3
Catalyst version 9.8

Game version info:

MTW Gold Edition (that's with Viking Invasion)
version 2.01
XL Mod installed

I tried lots of stuff and I am still not sure what is mandatory to get it to work but I am sure of these:

skipcredits.txt
button fix

Apart from that I also did this:

set anti-aliasing to 2*
disabled Catalyst A.I.
disabled AGP texture acceleration in dxdiag.exe
set AGP memory to 0 MB in MTW performance settings

It might be my imagination, but it seems that this last one helps cut back on loading times.

So now I can actually play again. I even don't have to quit all systray apps anymore (although it might still crash if one of those shows a pop-up). I am still stuck with two things:

Loong loading times - although not (yet) as long as some people are reporting
having to play with admin rights

It would be great if anyone has suggestions on those.

So, thanks again to all the good people here.

Welcome to the .org Guilielmus Bauarie,

I've tried the settings you've suggested (I've tried these in the past also among others) and there is no difference in load times. I have a roughly 3 minutes delay before the load screen bar starts to move. I have tried newer drivers in the past for my HD 3650 and it makes no difference, so these days I stick with Catalyst 8.8 (the drivers on the CDROM that came with the card).

If you have Shogun TW then you may find that it will run ok. I can run every TW game without issue except Medieval.

I was already suspicious of it. As far as the actual load time goes, I think mine is shorter than 3 minutes - I'd guess about a minute or so (but I have not timed it yet). But I wouldn't know what causes the difference.

I bought, installed, and patched VI and I had the same problem. I returned the game but I still had it installed on my PC (which is kind of an asshole thing to do except that the game didn't even work).

I started thinking it might be in the .exe (which would be awesome because the expansion uses the same exe as the core game) so I went to gamecopyworld.com and downloaded a new exe for the 2.01 VI and it worked! I've been playing for about 40 minutes so far and no crashes.

I suggest you try another exe if nothing else works.

Sorry I must have missed this post. Before you try anything else, run a custom or quick battle and just try playing the battle. Ensure that you can direct the units to move and attack correctly. If you can't then there is no point continuing.

roy_d_merkel
11-10-2009, 22:02
sorry, now I guess I was a smidge tardy....

I can battle and control my units correctly, but the perspective is alittle off - unit and background sizes are correct, but units tend to hover a few pixels above where they actually are, and to tell them to move to a point you have to tell them to move to a point in front of where you want them to be....

Right now though I'm trying to figure out how to fix my campaign map lagging problems.

I'm going to look at some of the forums first though since I noticed people address it in other posts buried deeper in the bowels of this forum...

Thanks again, Roy.

Hi, I created this account exclusively for this thread.

I've read through every post in this thread, and most links that people posted. However, my problem remains unsolved. Should I find the solution myself, I will definately post it here.:book::idea2:

My problem seems unique, I couldn't find anybody with similiar problems - unless I misunderstood two or three of you. Everything works fine, except Battles. No matter what settings I have on the graphic card or MTW I still get the same results. The screen in Battles appear grey, and flickering very fast. The curser also leaves "traces" of itself wherever I move it. On top of that I'm unable to move the camera, select troops, or even access some kind of menu. The music plays just fine, though.

I tried taking screenshots of it, but they only had the loading screen on them, with the full, red bar. I'd guess that it is somehow stuck between the loading screen and the actual battle. At the absolute worst settings for the graphic card, I could see that the flickering was black lines moving across the screen very fast.

I'm tired of never being able to play Battles. I've completed campaign now by just using auto-calculate outcome, which is fine, but I miss the battles. On my old computer MTW ran just fine, but with this newer computer it doesn't. Here's the hardware on my current computer:

Motherboard: MSI K9AGM2, original BIOS
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core @ 2.8GHz
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT, 512 MB
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE
RAM: 2048 MB
Minotor: LG L222W, 21.6 inch

Everything is properly cooled (CPU cores are generally at 35-40 degrees celcius). I also have access to two older graphic cards, GeForce 7900 and 9600. But I doubt the 9600 will make a diffirence, and the 7900 is damaged, so I don't want to try that.

Since nobody else seems to have this problem, I draw two conclusions. Either it is a very rare problem, or everybody knows how to solve it. I hope it's the latter.:2thumbsup:

God I love MTW.

I've not heard of this issue as yet. Updating drivers or indeed downgrading may fix it, but due to the other problems it won't be worthwhile.

Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT, 512 MB

This is a well known problem with the Nvidia 8xxx/9xxx series cards: 7 page thread at Nvidia forums dealing with the 8xxx/9xxx series and MTW (http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=40869&hl=medieval%20total%20war&st=120)

The problem as yet has no solution. If you really want to play the game and battles, you will need to get a different graphics card. Be aware though that even changing the graphics card is a minefield as even ATI cards can have certain issues.

(STW is also affected by this issue)

I don't need to post my specs to expect help, because the help I'm asking for has nothing to do with my specs.

Perhaps you have a PCI Express graphics card/chip?

Then why is "AGP Texture Acceleration" enabled? I'm sure I have a PCIe card, but I still need to know how to turn off AGP Texture Acceleration.

Which ATI card do you have?

Does it even matter? It's obviously post Vista, the issue is that no driver exists which is compatible. I have no idea why. Maybe Bill Gates was just really upset when the Mongols showed up. But I am not asking about what the problem is because I know what the problem is. I'm asking if anyone has had any experience running drivers for an ATI card on their Vista system that ran Total War.

Well yes it does actually.

Then why is "AGP Texture Acceleration" enabled? I'm sure I have a PCIe card, but I still need to know how to turn off AGP Texture Acceleration.
It's enabled by default as PCI-e does the same kind of texture swapping as AGP did (it just does it a lot faster and a lot more efficiently). The short answer is that you can't disable it in DX10 - I've no idea why, ask M$.

If it makes you feel any better, I doubt that option will make any difference anyway. There have been no reports here of anyone needing to disable it so far and the game can be made to run on Vista + ATI without disabling it.

Vista is not your issue, old game + new graphics hardware/software is.

Now how about posting some specs and describing the crash exactly? i.e. precisely when it occurs etc?

No you didn't answer my question.

My question was "who has gotten MTW to work on Vista + ATi, and what drivers?" You answered neither question and continued to demand information that has no bearing on that question at all.

I'm not sure why you say that I think this sega tech support, I have never had to deal with Sega tech support because MTW had worked for me.

Now I am faced with a CTD in which every proposed fix in every combination does not work because the drivers I have are not compatible, as such, I am curious about what if any drivers are compatible.

Has anyone found a working solution for the long load screen times?

My game when loading a campaign map or battle screen takes about 90 seconds to load with about 75 seconds not doing anything...and then once the load bar starts it goes very quickly.

I have an ATI Radeon 3600 vid card with 2 gig memory.

I cant quite take this long of a load time so I guess I wont be playing this game.

In desperation I tried installing on my wife's PC which has a lesser vid card and the install wouldn't even fire off....:wall:

I have the same problem, but it takes the loading bar 3-4 minutes to go to the strategic map or tactical map - it even takes that long if I just ESCape to save the game and then click on 'Return to Game'!

I can't get it to work right either. I have Vista 64bit OS, ATI Radeon HD 4850, and have just about quit trying to get it to work. Battle map resolution is only 800x600 with bad lag. It sucks. Even though the game is old, I really miss playing it. :tired:

For god sake Baron!

Save yourself the grief and trouble and get an auxiliary PC! The solution involves some cash sure, but what the hell man. 2nd hand PC-stuff is not that expensive these days and it is a fool-proof solution as long as you get the right GFX-card and use win2K or XP 32bit as OS for the sake of drivers - you can't fail. 2K seems to be the best OS for MTW in my experience.

If you already got some old spare parts it is unlikely that it will cost you more then some 100 Euros in total, all inclusive (monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse you already got. If not, then it is cheap to get some basic PS2-mouses etc. anyhow). Get decent gamewise and play some MTW! You know you want too. Why bother with Vista at all since it will obviously only screw things up for you anyhow? Nah, time to settle this once and for all… :wink2:

The totally “MTW-foolproof” ATI-cards are as follows:

Model (Motherboard standards)
-------------------------------------------------
X850 series (AGP/PCI-E)
X800 series (AGP/PCI-E)
Radeon 9800 XT (AGP)
Radeon 9800 Pro (AGP)
Radeon 9700 Pro (AGP)

These are the ones you really want for your auxiliary-MTW rig. However, any ATI Radeon 128MB/256Bit card prior to the release of the X850-series are likely to be safe as well I would imagine. Now, why should you accept Vistas nonsense and CA’s neglect? Use old Catalyst drivers and play the game as it was meant to be played (3-5 sec loading-times). Personally I use Radeon 9800 Pro cards, Catalyst 3.7 drivers (anything between 3.0-3.8 will do for those) and win2K.

I actually have a stash of 4 Radeon 9800 cards - just to be ridiculously safe indefinitely. At least get 2 cards to be totally sure that you can play MTW for an extremely long time to come - regardless what CA does. This way you can ignore them back indefinitely – and is that not a nice change?

Seriously, isn’t it time to stop this all this nonsense with Vista and all MTW-fuss? Get a dedicated auxiliary rig and get rid of the problem once and for all – a 100 euros later (all included probably) and this fuss will be dust….

- Cheers
-------------
If you can’t build a rig on your own – then hire somebody who can and who needs some cash.

On the subject of going down the "extra PC" route - you do not necessarily need anything but the PC tower itself if you get hold of one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch

You can get hold of a cheap two way KVM switch for about £15 - 20 new. You then only need a cheap second hand PC with an Athlon XP/Pentium4 and Radeon 9xxx series or Nvidia 6xxx/7xxx series graphics card and about 512MB of RAM

Of the X series Radeons it's best to stick with the early "hundreds" series cards, like the X700 and X800, and not the thousands series (e.g. X1600 and X1950). The best drivers for the 9xxx series Radeons were always 2.6.53. They seem to give the best performance/stability trade off, though it's still a good idea to apply the button fix (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?79500-MTW-crashing-or-getting-hung-up-on-loading-A-couple-solutions.&p=1921448&viewfull=1#post1921448) as well.

The KVM allows you to toggle between your main PC and the other PC using only a double tap on the scroll lock key (or similar). It eliminates the need for a second keyboard, monitor and mouse. The only snag is - avoid the USB KVMs, if possible use PS/2 k/b and mouse or use the PS/2 to USB adaptors. (The USB ones are ok, but every time you "switch" device detection occurs (USB hotplugging), which may/may not cause issues (in most cases it shouldn't).

I just got MTW Gold Edition after playing Rome to death. Rome worked fairly well with occasional freezes.

MTW keeps crashing to desktop when I try to play quick battle or the campaign tutorial. I can play on the campaign map in campaign, I haven't gotten into a battle yet as I would like to do the tutorial. I've tested multiple video settings in game as well as compatibility modes.

I am using Daemon Tools as I'm playing on a laptop and can't be carrying CDs around. But I installed the game with the physical disc and have tried to play with it as well, so I don't think that that is the issue.

I'm a Dell Inspiron 1545 with the following stats:
Pentium Dual Core 2.00 GHz
4Gig Ram
Mobile Intel 45 Series Express Chipset (Version 8.15.10.1749)

@ Axalon - Good to hear from you and I hope all is well. I think I'll take your advice and pick up a cheap used PC just for MTW. My Pentium 4 motherboard went bad and I always toyed with the idea of getting it repaired. It has Windows XP 32 bit, NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 128-MB AGP Graphics Card, dual hardrives, and 1 GB RAM. I guess a used PC would probably be cheaper than trying to find a Intel (Lexington 2) Pentium 4 - 2.53-GHz (533-MHz) R3 [Part #2517638] motherboard and the cost of the repair.

caravel
05-05-2010, 12:30
I would say that's a socket 478 board? You can get any such board on ebay from about £10 - 20. Any 478 board with an AGP 2.0/3.0 slot should do the job providing it supports your CPU. But if you're not experienced in building PC and reinstalling an OS, I would advise against it.

Hello everyone, Im having a problem playing the campaign (On MTW Viking invasion) and could really use some much needed help.

Here are my specs: Windows 7 64-bit OS 4 GB ATI Radeon 5900 Series, 12 GB Ram, 3.33 GHz Processor

When I start a new campaign, I cannot see any units or cities or any other objects on the campaign map. In addition I cannot see the cursor and when I go to the main menu or the options screen, its seems to blink and turn black. I can play a quick battle pretty well except for the black flashes.

I can play Rome Total War perfectly, but Medieval and Shogun seem to have this problem on them. Any suggestions?

I have been trying to fix my CTD problem for days, and finally came across this.

When I first installed Viking Invasion, I was getting all manner of error messages. So, I downloaded another Viking Invasion off the same disk. It worked fine, no error messages. But when I click on the icon, the credits dont even start. When the screen with the copyright information appears, the window exits out and nothing happens.

Yes, modded. My own mod. I only meddled with the Early text and the unit files.
That's probably your answer though. Test vanilla and see if that fails at the same spot. You can test the 1204/1205 transition by modding the early period start date. i.e. change it to 1203 end hit end turn a few times.

This is an entirely new problem for me. Set your desktop colour depth to 16 bit and try again. Does that remove the black flashes only?

You need to post some system specs. Also create the blank text file "skipcredits.txt" and place in the Medieval_TW.exe working directory and see if that gets you any further.

That's some kind of DirectDraw acceleration problem. If you have Aero enabled, disable it and try again. Also try running the game in Windowx XP compatibility mode. Other than that I can't be of much help sorry.

So I'm having a CTD problem on the campaign, I browsed through a lot of this thread and haven't found anything like it.

So as I start a campaign the game runs fine, but as a game gets longer it starts to crash more and more often. It happens in a couple specific instances:

When I save a game and hit resume once it loads
When I click on a specific province (For instance, one game every time I clicked on Cordoba it crashed)
When about to start a battle between two large armies

I'm running M:TW with the Vikings Invasion expansion, and I believe it has the most recent patch. I've messed around with ingame video and performance options, and still have crashes.

Here are some of my system specs:

Dell Inspiron 1545
Pentium Dual-Core CPU 2.00GHz
4.00 GB RAM
Windows 7 (64 Bit)
Graphics: Mobile Intel 45 Express Chipset Family (Latest Drivers)

Oddly enough, I have the same problem with crashes beginning once I have played a game for awhile in all of the TW games I've played, Shogun, Medieval and Rome.

I've recently bought Medieval 2: Total War from Steam online. Whenever I hit 'play', the screen goes black and the infamous 'unspecified error' comes up. I've browsed for solutions for several hours. I've even tried deleting the 'data\descr_geography_new.text' files after unpacking, which didn't do anything.

I recently upgraded my video card from a GeForce 5200 to a Radeon HD 3650 running XP. Could this be this issue? I've also tried switching to 16bit display, with the same result. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I would be out $10!

Getting the game to run on Vista or Win7 with NVidia cards of series 200 and up.

Just thought I would add this link to this thread. I have a fairly new PC running Vista 64 bit on an I7 940 CPU with a GTX560Ti GPU. I have both the original disks for Medieval and the Viking Expansion, but I also had the Total War: Era version which has both the original game and Viking Expansion on one disk . I used this to install the game since it contained all the patches.

I also set my graphics card to force 2x AA in the game since I knew this generally was a prevention fix for CTD's. The game fired up just fine, but I could not make any changes to the campaign or battle map resolutions. They were fixed at 800 x 600 for the campaign and 640 x 480 for battle. The latter was just too painful to look at for a battle.

Then I ran across this post by "Just Learnin" at the Total war forum. However, I also found it posted here, but only in the Shougun help forum, so I thought I would cross link it for people wanting to play Medieval.

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?129056-Windows-Vista-7-resolution-problems-(800x600-bug)&highlight=Learnin

Anyway, this fixed all the resolution issues and now Medieval seems to work just fine at the highest resolution posssible 1600 x 1200. I'm going to try Shogun next when I get some time.

Hope this helps some.

I can run the campaign mode just fine, but any time I take personal command of a battle (instead of letting the computer automate the outcome), then the next time I hit Esc (so I can save), the game crashes. Anyone know what's going on?

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, i5-2400 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 graphics.

Been having some weird CTD. It will load just find and you can play the single player campaign but it will randomly CTD.

I have Windows 7 and Intel 4000 graphics card.

I am new on here but, I have been frustrated with MTW Gold version crashing on my laptop. I don't have a very nice graphics card, it is an Intel HD Family card. And So none of the NVIDIA stuff effects me. -Snip- Any solutions?

Hello all. I've been playing MTW+Viking Invasion for years on my desktop, and it never chrashed.
Now I've installed it on my notebook, Toshiba Satellite L650 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1366x768. Windows 7 Home.
The starting movie doesn't work, the video settings are unmodifiable, and when trying to buy buildings the game crashes.
The strategic map results 800x480 and the battle field results 640x480, both unmodifiable.
I can open a new campaign, but the windows for buying buildings or units are higher than the screen, I cannot close them and the program crashes anyway.
I tried even to declare the program as XP SP3 compatible, but nothing changes. What's the matter? Masaniello

There are quite a few issues with MTW and new machines, but from your PC description we should be able to get you running.

The issue with the video settings probably related to your machine exceeding the games expected memory size, there is a discussion about it here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?127906-Resalution-issues). Sepheus created a DirectDraw wrapper that lets you avoid manually adjusting the mapping, you can find it here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?142044-Fix-for-resolution-problems).

Also, run the game in either WinXP or Win2000 compatibility mode. I would also suggest that you apply the button patch described here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?103656-NEW-Fix-for-CTD-when-starting-campaign-%28Nvidia-High-End-Cards%29-10), this tends to help with some CTD issues.

Try these out and let us know how it goes.

What a fast solution!
Yes, I ran MSCONFIG / BOOT / ADVANCED and changed the maximum amount of memory to be used from "nothing" (4096) to 2560.
The intro movie doesn't still work, but I could change the video resolution to 1024x768 and start regularly a new campaign.
It doesn't explain why on my desktop with its 8GB RAM the game works perfectly without any intervention, but it doesn't matter now.
Many thanks from Masaniello

What OS was your desktop running?

You will probably want to use Sepheus' Direct Draw dll patch instead of the manual change, this way you don't leave your computer gimped for other programs.

I never got my Medieval: Total War to work since I last posted in this thread a few years ago.

However, the game is now available on Steam, and that one works for me without any problems whatsoever! Recommend trying that to whoever still has issues.

Cheers
