2. Faction icons, we have already a few, there are well done, most of them, that is not a problem. What we need currently are :
a) Models (top priority)
b) Skins (top priority)
c) Building icons, 2D art for the mod (loading screens, menu bars, etc, etc)
d) Building three, with apropriate description and icons.
After Caius has released the map, i propose we should start making a working beta version as quikly as possible...

Uh that's a pretty big unit list. How many factions do you have? Really unless you have about five factions that's way, way too many units for just the Inca.

I do not have photoshop and im not buying it so if you could do the icons, banners, loading screens it would be great. You can inspire in the ones which i made som pages ago...
Id be more than happy to do so. I feel useless now that I cant get the skinning thing to work. Tell me what to do and ill do it.
I have made 2 faction icons so far. Image shack is not working at the moment so I cant post them.

I belive you mean too cartoony? In my opinion the blue is ok.

There is 7 factions, but due to the lack of information, we will reuse many units.

The top one could work for Chachapoyas (if nobody objects) and the bottom one could be for the Augaruna (again if nobody objects)

More loading screens.... this one, than another loading screen with edited images of Machu Picchu, other sites, etc ~:)
@Motep : try to use ration when you talk to your mother... explain her, in short, simple words... try to look mature in front of her and she will understand... about the Antivirus, i recommand to use AVG... Norton eats alot of memory ~;)

Is it ok if I start making loading screens? Like the still images in Vanilla. I could do a hybrid of real inca art and some other things. I was thinking of some leather
with some embossed marble at each side. The red bar? Anyone knows how to change it? If someone teaches me, we could do something like a textile pattern getting burned to show loading.

descr_sm_factions (I changed it to allow for the different cultures and so that only the factions that will be used are in the custom battles)
export_descr_unit (all the new units)
export_units (the units descriptions)
expanded_bi (the faction names to allow for easier faction selection in custom battles)
Note: I have not changed the faction icons

Mabye in the final release we could have the "five unique units" but right now we are trying to get done with the ones we do have...
There will be no cavalry, but the incans (at least) will have one infantry unit that is faster than the archers. The emphisis will be on overwelming numbers on each side, and normal archers will take the place of horse archers in RTW.

About the loading bar, the files needed to change it are in C:\Program Files\Rome - Total War\Data\loading_screen There are some files named like: loading_bar, loading_bar_overlay and stuff like that.

If yes, where would the mayan rebels go?

Does that mean that if we play a battle with normal unit against a faster-than-archers inca unit we will be constantly pursuing it(skirmish mod) in an endless race around the map until clock goes empty and it ends in a draw???

The "faster-than-archers inca unit" is melee based, so it does not have skrimish mode. It is mainly to be used as an anti-archer unit, what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in charge bonus. I am toying with the idea of adding "Amazon Warriors" to the unit trees of some factions as a faster-than-archers unit to balance the play.
Regarding the faster-than-archers unit, please make sure it is based on history, I would hate to see fantasy units in this mod.
I just reinstalled gimp and RTW (sadly I had to uninstall EB) and I am ready to begin skinning, but I will need historical info/pictures so I can get an idea on what the units are supposed to look like.

The faster-than-archer units are called Chaski (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chasqui)
The Chasquis (also Chaskis) were agile and highly-trained runners that delivered messages, royal delicacies and other objects throughout the Inca Empire, principally in the service of the Sapa Inca.
Chasquis were trained in attack and defense techniques to help ensure delivery of their charges.
If someone thinks they should be out, please speak up
For the skinning of the units, you could look on Page 1 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=69608) for Incan Units, and Page 5 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=69608&page=5) for the Mapuche units, otherwise you could image search on yahoo or google.
Nice work. Also, if I am provided with the database( edu file dictionary line) name of the Unit, I can provide some unit descriptions. I have plenty of time to spare. Just pm the database names to me.

Just log onto inca_total_war@yahoo.com and open the email there that is called "For the Team", you can get the mod so far from there.
There is no faction icons there
could you just pm me the database names for the units? I lack the program to decompress the file on the e-mail.

Yes...
Diaguita will be basically heavily influenced by the Mapuche Culture...

So are you saying you broke a key on the keyboard of your dad's laptop? The only suggestion I can come up with is take your computer to a computer store and have them fix it, it would probably only take them like 5 minutes and I don't think i would cost too much. Also you could pull a key off an old laptop or keyboard and put on but that wouldn't stop your dad from finding out....

That really sucks that you can't model, I am having problems with skinning as well. I find out I have to have a plugin to open dds files, then I download it and find out the plugin is for an older version and I need some program to unpack it:furious3:
EDIT: oh yeah and how long does the trial period of 3ds max last maybe I could help with modeling as well as skinning.

How do you add an image to your signature?
you need to upload the picture to photoshack, copy the url it provides, go to user cp, click on "edit signature" and there is a box just like the one for posting. click on "insert image" paste the url and your done. As soon as I finish some skins I'm going to make a sig for myself ~D

It looks like a great faction icon for the Chimu....
Unfortunately, the Chimuan languages are extinct (died out relatively recently), and i was unable to find any large source about them... even worse, they were part of an isolated linguisticall group, so if we name their units with Aymara or Quetchua names, it would be totally ahistoric.... i`ll try to do my best to find the necesary books to name their units.
It does look like a great faction icon, but it may be too realistic.
If a modeler joins us, could we make a Rat Warrior or that Deer Huntsman?
Maybe we could ask Hoggy if we could use some of his figures, the ones in blue lotus, giving him proper credit of course. WE could skin them, give them a American outfit, and change a few cosmetics and we could have a great aray of exotic units. Modelers are like the games of a console, they make people buy them. No one ever buys a ps3 to be able to play Dvds.

Egyptian culture buildings could be partially skinned ..adding deocorative patterns on them,would make them look awesome...it would work fine at least for Chimu.... i have planned alot on this, and i know theoretically at least what could be done, and it wouldbe really great, unfortunately we lack moddelers and skinners... we badly need them....at least 4 or 5....:embarassed: :embarassed:

I have thought again about the suggestions some people give to us, that we should make the mod for Medieval II. Unfortunately, making a total conversion mod for Medieval II, at this moment, is practically impossible (due to the way CA made the game), and even if somewhere in a year or so the TW members could manage to crack somehow the game mechanisms, or CA release some help and information, making a modell/skin for a Medieval II unit, means 4 or 5 times more work than for a RTW one... It would be, more or less, a waste of time, considering the fact that we already know much about the whereabouts of RTW engine.
This is my first experience with modelling... it scares me...
It is a good start !! Make more attempts, and read some tutorials over there at the Scriptorium, and i`m sure that in 2-3 months you will be able to create realistic models with awesome skins ~;)

I have a number of suggestions....
We should turn our attention to 2D art.... leaving the 3D moddeling to the time some experienced moddelers will join us.
We need :
BUILDING ICONS (it would not be nice see dacian building icons for the Diaguita...)
FACTION CHARACTER FACES (we are not going to let the Inca`s have roman faces !!!)
NAMES (for the ones in wich we have info about the language, the ones belonging to groups with extinct languages will be left for later times when we get the necesarry info ~;) )
LOADING SCREENS (the ones so farr are awesome, but we need more !)
INTERFACES, MENU`S, ETC...
Also, we will need to research for :
CITYES, PROVINCES, RESOURCES, ETC....
We need to name the provinces, we need to name the cityes.... and add the resources. After we got a working map, we could ask permission from the FATW members to implement the "regional lore" system.
In the case there are no historically accurate names for the cityes and provinces from a certain region, we will make what CA did with Rome : give them generic names, but translated into quetchua , for the sake of some accuracy...
Everybody who wants to join the mod is welcomed.

Sorry to don't have abilities ( and time ) for 3D modding. But if someone could send me some standard .Tgas textures i can start working with them.

I am going to ask Ramon from IBDF in the near future to give me one of its units, wich i studied for QUITE A LONG TIME and wich suits perfectly to create a Inca unit just trough basic skinning...
If you know how to work with photoshop, then skinning is no problem for you ~;)
We could have just trough skinning at least 10-20% of the mods units... ~:)
If there would be a way to skin the walls, or so... that would be awesome, i will ask at the Scriptorium ~:)

do you guys think I should skin on vanilla models or wait until we finish some of our owne models? I think it would be better to skin on our own models, that way they will be more accurate and will look better. Maybe until then I could do 2d art.

Guess im the moddler your looking for.
I should remind you that im freelance at the moment, I can help as much as i can but it has been a very long time since modding rtw. I cant guarentee quick results but i will do my best. I am also primarilly a Texture Artist so my best skills lay there. Also, rigging isnt my strong point as i pointed out to Murfios in a PM but i need to learn if im to make into the industry. Give me a reference image and a week to build it, UV and rigging another week perhaps (i have uni projects to complete also and are priority).
I'm assuming this project still resides in RTW??

I mean, will there be only 3 provinces coverig brazil or chile-argentina while there are 4567 provinces in peru alone?
I didnt like that in rome total war: there were 675 provinces in europe and 17 for middle east and Africa....

very few settlements in the Atacama Desert, very few in the Amazonia... the rest will be balanced.

All games ussualy missrepresent the East and the South... the main reasons is, that it is considered that the people of south-eastern europe, or from the islamic countryes, does not buy so much the game, etc, so they dont need to have historically accurate representations of their faction...

Im afraid youre wrong. The Atacameño people(theres a tribe name for rebels)
and the chilean diaguita lived in the atacama desert for thousands of years, working copper. There were many settlements located in numerous oasis (Chile has a lot of rivers), like San Pedro de atacama, Tulor and others.

The mapuche, as they still exist, have a lot of female names that can be used, but the kakan (diaguita language) has died so those are the ONLY names i found googling for ages..

These are 4 weapons I built base on what i could see in the first image, from left to right.
Hammer, Mace, Spear with feathered staff, Spear with knotted staff and plumed neck.
Poly counts arent huge.
Hammer - 111 Faces
Mace - 70 Faces
Spear 1 - 39 Faces
Spear 2 - 67 Faces
The detail comes from the textures as Belisaire probably knows. You can plug and rescale these weapons as need be, as long they are labeled primary weapon or secondary weapon when saved into .CAS format within Max.
If you specifically want to see them textured i can knock up a texture for each within 2 hours tomorrow.
I need a link to download the trial version of 3dsmax.
And it is possible to mod with other program than 3dsmax?

Hmmm.... i dont think if it is worth making complicated textures for them.... a simple wood texture for the wooden part, respectively stone, copper, gold texture for the tip (depending on the unit). Also, Filibustiera had shown a specific Mapuche attack weapon.... it would be good if we managed to insert it somehow....
How about the blowpipe ? What do you think, any chances to see such a thing inserted, or should we give up to the concept ?

Modelling a blow pipe is not the issue, its animating the damn thing. I'm not an animator let alone knowing how to get them into the game. All my past exploits have involved using an exisiting animation set i did try to play with animations once but failed.
Answer is if you can get an RTW experienced animator in then yes we can have blowpipes.
Oh, plus im reasonable concept artist but no where near the best. Some what still learning how to sketch things to scale.

Very worthwhile item of interest to research... OI RESEARCH PEOPLE!!! GET TO WORK!!! ... sorry my leadership skills crossing over again... im the group leader to a team of 11 people in university for a project and i been sorting them out all day! lol

Has anyone tried the Chachapoyas yet? How are they, do I need to balance them more?
Note: Motep said that the Incas are somewhat more powerfull than the Ayamra, that will be remedied by allowing them to recruit their units much sooner than the Incas.
Just a reminder: We are leaving next week and our laptop is not fixed yet (not that I am allowed to use it to mod). So does anyone else know how to mod units (aside from Motep and anyone else not allowed to mod)? If not then the mod will come to a big halt in progress untill January, and that would be really bad.

Thanks for your choice to watch this mod, but I can now say for certain that it is quite dead in its original concept. A new mod, which RichyG13 founded, called the Renaissance World: TW or somesuch, was started, but I'm not sure if it is being followed through.
I blame myself for the mod's death, as I really didn't put in as much effort as I should have. I also feel strongly that the mod would have had a demo version released some time ago, late last yearish, if our mapper, whose name I will not spread, had delivered his beta world map to us.
Again, I thank you for your interest. If this concept ever resurfaces it will be based on MII or a later Total War game.

Im new here, really surprised by the efforts of some people developing interesting mods for RTW. I love this game, and then I come upon this room with a proyect that has really awaken my enthusiasm. I have long dreamed and waited to see the Inca empire brought to a game with the most exact historical accuracy possible, but most of the games in wich they have appeared show -to my pain- an "azteclike" inca civ, full of mid-naked, bird-like plumed warriors, armed wit macuahitls and tepoztopillis.
¿Did I mention i am peruvian? well, its not that all peruvians know how incan warriors exactly where (most of them have the aztec-like inca warrior stereotype deep in there heads). I also dont know if there are other peruvians in this forum (if there are any, my greetings =)) but what is true is that to live here is a really big advantage if someone has curiosity and wants to learn about prehispanic past, especially if, like me, has been obsesed with the incan military, studing every possible source. Now, i see there is not only the chance to help make a rts (a mod well) based in this extraordinary civilization, but that it can be done with the awsome engine of RTW.
Well, what I want to offer here is my absolute help with all the knowledge I handle about the Inca civilization, in matter of dresses, weapons, places, cities, military ranks, and all what could contribute to a more realistic gaming experience. Im tired of naked indians passing for incas in the games, movies or series, and i want to contribute to end this ang a more realistic image of incan society. I have not read all the messages in the forum, so I really dont know how much developed the mod is nor wich sources are you handling for the design of the military suits. nevertheless, I have seen some images and concept art some of you have posted in this forum and certainly, I tell with no doubt and complete sureness there are some deep and crucial errors in them. Ill tell you wich are they i me next posts

I tried to keep it as simple as possible, it isnt possible to flex the rope bit. For animations use the slinger set and it will look fine.

Just a little reference Id like to make, the "bolas" term for this weapon is actually the spanish name for the device, and its not even a translation (i dont know why wikipedia doesnt say anything about this). in the original quechua this weapon is known as "Ayllo" (or ayllu), and some say it began being used intensivley in battle after the spanish arrival, since the thing trapped the horses in charge making them fall.
I think a more proper name fot this unit could be "Incan Ayllo warrior" or "Ayllo thrower" (notice i write "AYLLO" and not "AYLLU", ayllu was the characteristic familiy unit in the ancient andes, but in fact they sound just the same). good luck there!

Also, we are facing the issue of giving names to units in the native languages... with the Mapuche, Inca and Aymara we managed to finish them very well, but what about Chachapoyas native names for units, or Chimu names (Chimu languages are, unfortunately dead for about 50 years or so...), not to mention the more obscure Aguaruna....There is plenty of reading to do.... familly trees to make, etc.

Capes are relativly easy to do, what kinda cape did you have in mind since none of AOM's research showed the Inca wearing capes.

I tried to keep it as simple as possible, it isnt possible to flex the rope bit. For animations use the slinger set and it will look fine.

Just a little reference Id like to make, the "bolas" term for this weapon is actually the spanish name for the device, and its not even a translation (i dont know why wikipedia doesnt say anything about this).
I didn't know that, but instead of Bola throwers or something like that we are using: Boleadora, Avestrucera, and Perdida (depending on the number of weights the Bolas(or Ayllo))
@Murfios: Not the incans will not fight the aztecs in historical battles, but that is what custom battles are for!!
Ok, I have the sketch of the ayllo soldier, problem is I dont know how to upload the image here, ¿could you help me a little with that?, what do I have to do?
for instance, I have a Moche dictionary. Muchik or moche, the languaje of the north coast spoken by ancient moches was also sepaken by the chimu and other people of the place (we should believe that, since the spanish made up this dictionary and other muchik dictionaries to understand the people of the kingdom of chimu, by the time a province of the Inca but a very important and populated one). ill look there for some terms, there should be some interesting stuff there.

Using the tutorial of BDH, i managed to make a piece of Map_Heights.tga of Northern Chile... i`ll speak with Caius to see how is the progress, and what needs to be done for the map ~;)
Deffinetly we will need high resolution as we will have to represent high plateu regions... the altiplano...

Ok, Here goes the concept for an ayllo soldier:

The numbers are as follow:
1. the suit is a plain yellowish uncu, no stripes, no decorations, since this is light unit and of extraction from the common people. there are no decorations.
notice the long hair, please remeber: NOBLEMEN USED SHORT HAIR; PEASANTS LONG HAIR. so captains, the inca and the Cuzco noblemen used very short hair. (nevertheless this doesnt aplly to all elites of the andes)
2. the shield is the common wooden one, wrapped in yellow leather with decorations in the front.
3. the sandals are of auquenid leather , brownish or orange with stripes.
4. the helmet or "chuku" is a standard inca helmet, they where made of wood or reinforced branches wrapped in wool. there are some of them in the museum here, they look more like skater helmets but with a woolish texture. almost every inca soldier whore chukus. (in a belic culture in wich clubs where the staple, how could yo not protect your head?)
5. well, for this unit this is just a simple stone club for when the ammo runs out.
6. well, the "boleadorea" or ayllo. this goes inside a..
7. ..."chuspa" or bag. every slinger had a chuspa with stones. is obviious that a unit armed with ayllos should have also had one to handle the ayllos wich are easy to transport in a bag.
Ok, I hope you can see the image. if not ill link it again. I´ve come upon some concerns about this kind of warrior.. dont think it could have existed as armed only with this wearpon...but ill tell you later about that. for now, hope this can be of use to you.
AHHH, for the peasants,...i was thinking if they could attack with slings in the begining, you know, with just a little amo and then armed with simple stone clubs. this is cause andean peasants at the time where since childhood trained in the sling not only for battle but to pest the vermins and nefarious birds form crops, and also foxes or even pumas when they appeared as a menace to the cattle

Render shows progress with texturing (very simple first layer) and start of weighting to the RTW skeleton.

This is almost ready to be entered into CAS format... im reasonably sure it will work fine. I dont have RTW installed right now due to lack of HD space, so someone will have to test it for me. I'll finish a sample texture to use in testing.

Yes...maybe you are right richyg.
For instance, Ive seen your model and I think it has a real good look, great modellig!, about the hair, maybe you can shorten it. if you cant, it can still be a render for a sergeant (they where not nesseraly Cuzcos). Since I think (maybe im wrong) yours is the most advanced model, Ill try to post a concepto art for an Inca general soon. that way you can grab some more ideas to add to your model. Bye!

Tell her that modding is the same as writing in a word document except a program looks at it for advise, it would no more crash a computer then writing a report in MS Word would.
If that does not work, I might get my mom on to explain (she is not very computer proficient and might be able to make a point).
