both units seem to be exactly the same and i think this kind of overlap is very boring. (it is more forgivable when one unit is milita the other proffessional)
ive had a go at converting the dismounted boyar sons into a javelin throwing heavy infantry _ so that they are a truer equevelent of their mounted counterparts (along with dismounted polish nobles):

im intersted in any other suggestion for what to do with them. I dont think minor changes would really be sufficient - eg you could change the reduce the armour and icrease atack values for one of them but i think the differnce would be barely noticable. tactically speaking they are both going to be hard heavy infantry units.
ive no idea if it is at all historically acurate, but making them a missile + melee troop adds a bit more variety.
an alternative would be to perhaps make the dismounted druzinha swordsmen? maybe use the model from one of the danish units???
I welcome any suggestions - im more intersted in improving gameplay than historical accuracy.
It sounds great! Both missile and melee on foot :) Yeah, then at least it makes a difference. Makes me think of those Roman legions throwing a javelin before they charge. It should nicely thin out the opposing heavy infantry if encountered.
Another option is making one of them into a dismounted feudal knight type of unit, a swordsman with staying power. It'll complement an AP-axe unit well.
I was interested in your javilin throwing mod, but i didn't like the idea of the animation looking weird, so here's what I did...
since the Druzhina are described as being bodyguards and the flavor of them is a kinda primal, vicious, out-dated warrior... I simply cut their unit size in half and gave them 2hp... that gives them a unique niche, a bodyguard unit you can recruit, but of course they lack numbers, so it's balanced - then you don't have to make any changes to animations, models or even text descriptions....
iunno, i like it

thats a nice idea, why dont you post the changes so people can implement it if they like.
I beleive that it would be possible to the unit model of the dismounted polish nobles for the dismounted druzinha, which would solve the throwing issue
yeah, i thought about that too - but I wanted them to have the axes as their backup weapon
here's the small change I made: (simply copy/paste it over the current Druzhina & Dismounted Druzhina blocks inside the export_descr_unit.txt file if you wish to use a druzhina reminescent of berserkers)

When they release model editing tools, I'm totally making DBS into proper javelin chuckers.

Hmmm...
What about a smaller change?
Simply raise the defense of one unit to 18-20 while lowering their attack to 9 or so, while raising the attack of the other to 15-16 and reducing their defense a couple of points, for example?
