Barbarian Invasion players out there may recall that I once released an All Factions mod for BI which including allowing you to play as the various emergent factions as they appeared in the vanilla game by having the game auto-pilot to the point they emerged and then handing the player control.

I was going to release a similar mod for M2, however CA have made it so staggeringly easy that no modding is required!

Here's what to do:

Have a look in your Medieval II Total War folder and you'll see a file called medieval2.preference.cfg - right click on this file and go to Edit and the file will open in Notepad.

Add the following three lines to the [multiplayer] section (which were originally posted here (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=74132)):

[multiplayer]
playable = true
hotseat_turns = true
hotseat_scroll = false


Then start a campaign as normal and select England (remember to deselect any other factions additionally highlighted).

Launch the campaign and bring down the M2 console by pressing the ' key.

Type in:

control mongols

or

control timurids

depending on which you want to play as. Then type in:

control england

The game will then autopilot you (warning this may take a while) to the appearance of your chosen faction and give you control of them.

Nice find! It's very intersting to see how the AI expands without you there, and getting access to the timurids and mongols is just an added bonus :P

The game auto calculates the battles when an AI faction attacks me(I'm playing as the Mongols)...

Can this info be scripted to? We could use a traitor sistem. Like open the scroll for the x faction leader - change to its faction - etc.

Can you also pls ask how NewFactionLeader works or ManofTheHour? and how we could script it.

it does not work for me - are you sure this is in a simple singleplayer campaign? Do we have to delete the rest of the multiplayer info? Select and deselect what and were?

Edit - it works.
MP should look like this:

hotseat_disable_console = false

make sure is read only and you must type twice once to give your faction to the AI and once to gain control over a new faction.

serenius4tsd, you mean the "hotseat_autoresolve_battles = 0"?
It's just affects your attacks, if you AI will attack you on their turn it will autoresolve it.

(For Rebels type "control slave", that's kinda cool :D)

It's just affects your attacks, if you AI will attack you on their turn it will autoresolve it.

my suggestion would be to, edit ur config file and zoom forward to the mogols/turmids, then save as soon as u get there, exit the game and re edit the config file back to normal. this theoretically SHOULD fix ur problem, but i havent tried it so it may not work.

as for playing as aztecs/rebels, no need to zoom, just jump in and go "control Aztecs" i would think. although u will be very lonely on that island by urself. if u really wanted to mod this i would suggest getting the all factions mod, which allows u to recruit mercenary carracks and invade europe!!!

the reason you are getting auto resolved battels against the AI is because only "player 1" has actual full control. this was discovered for the purpose of being able to play multiplayer campaigns. this has been discussed in detail on that thread (don't have the link handy). whenever you set control to the other faction it is essentially making that selection "player 2" in a multiplayer campaign. in the multiplayer campaign battles of 1 vs 2, 2 has always been AI controlled so far...

...unless a fix has been found since i last read about it.


personally i like it for the purpose of just watching what effects my mods have the game. for instance, once i started England off with all of the Isles and fully built (Citadels and Huge Cities, fully built). in 50 turns they basically took over all of present day France and had their eyes on the Iberian Peninsula. However, when I upgraded some of their "English Only Units" to superman type abilities, 50 turns later all they had picked up was Rennes, Bruges, and Antwerp.

The Horde first appeared in Sarkel.
First I thought it would be Kiev - no
Then I thought it would be Constantinople - no
Then the Georgian city - no
Then Yerevan - no
Then Antioch (I was sure this was the one) - no
Bulgar, Iasi, Iconium, Adana, Edessa, Baghdad, Moscow, Ryazan, the entire Middle East except Trezibond, Novgorod...
What am I missing? Any help is appreciated even though I don't mind just rampaging.

Have you tried ordering your men to occupy the city?

Unfortunately that's the trouble with the AI - in 50 turns (even without that boost) a human player would have got much, much further than that.

As for the upgraded units, i'd wager that the AI didn't expand as much because they didn't 'know' that the units were more powerful, meaning that they won the battles that they were involved in but didn't get any more aggressive.

I got to control the Timurids, but I waited 102 turns seeing nothing but the fog of war! talk about boring!! so I saved the game to wait later!..

thats a simple fix, press ~ to open up the medieval shell, and type "toggle_fow" to see the whole world. I'd make sure you have the settings so that you dont have to watch every AI stack in the entire world move though.

Does this work for the Papal states? I'm trying to figure out how to play them in a campaign without downloading an entire mod that has a bunch of other things I dont care for.

Yeah, you can play them by just copying them to the playable list in fact. Be aware that you can control the rebels, but it will cause a crash if you do. Likewise, you need to be in control of a Faction when the warning about the mongols arriving shows up as thats what triggers thier apperrance, if your not in control of a faction when that message shows, they won't turn up ever.

when the patch comes will it cause problems because of the changes in settings i have made. and where i have altered the faction playable lists?

also i have the backup folder for mercenaries. but i am using a folder right now i modified so i could get certian mercenaries sooner and in more numbers.will that cause problems when i download the patch.

do i need to bring all the settings back to original on all this so i wont have any problems?

now i think i heard someone say you could copy the aztecs to playable too? is there any way for them to build a port or create a unit cheat to get boats in their fishing villages?

Not that i know of, you have to modify them for that, in fact they need modification becuase theirs only one level of city walls that they can build anything from. No other level gives them anything.

ive got the papacy going but when i checked the building browser i couldnt see what was needed to make the papal guard and swiss guard.

if you create a unit at least they would have a skin with the papacy. but i figured there must be some building that makes them since you see them used by the papacy later in the campaign.

are they called by a different name in the building browser that is why you cant see them?sorry for asking so many questions.

Large and Huge Stone Walls make Papal Guard/Swiss Guard them in vanillia.

Just go to the building browser thing through your city screen and right click on all of the buildings until you find one that makes the units you want. You only start with Rome which is a city so some of the missing units may only the trained in castles.

thanks carl i just got back from checking that. it seems that minor and city and large city makes the papal but when you go to huge the papal disappears but then the swiss guard appears.

now i can make swiss pikemen and halberdier armies with skins on them

you would think as simple as it is that they would just add the faction. at the start they even show the swiss guard as the strongest unit and that they have poor cav but the rest is incomplete.

you could rename the swiss guard as swiss armored halberdiers, use halberd militia and change stats on them and call them swiss halberdiers , rename swiss mercenary pikemen, use adventurer and rename them swiss armored pikemen. with these four units you could put together a swiss faction.

Okay, I got a Papal campaign going last night and got up to about 1115 AD and hit a crash. It happens after ending a turn and the AI does its movement portion. Always happens when the Byzantines are moving around Constantinople. Screen goes black and all I can see is the arrow cusrsor. I reboot pc and go back to that loaded turn and end it and then the screen goes black whenever the Byzantine AI does its move portion. Unfortunately I dont have another saved portion to load and try from. Anyone else have this problem?

I suppose I can start a new campaign but if random glitches like this is common I wont bother. I checked other saved faction campaigns I been playing and they are working fine. I'm playing the Lands To Conquer mod so not sure if thats part of the problem or not.

Any advice would be appreciated. :help:

on the mongols and timurids. couldnt you change the event turn for the mongols and timurids to appear so you can use them at the start of the campaign. when you switch over to them.

i wonder if that crash has something to do with the papals being treated in the game like the byzantines. if you watch the intro movie it calls the papal states the byzantines. i guess ill find out for myself.

Yeah, I noticed that intro too. I figured they didnt have one made up for the Papal faction and just used the Byzantine one since it was the closest match to the Papal faction in religion. Personally to me its a moot point but to others it may not be. If I dont come up with something by tomorrow I'll just start another Papal campaign and see how it goes. Hopefully this was just a one time glitch.

sometimes if you keep a good list of saves you can go back to one of your early saves and get to a point where the game was not setting itself up for the crash.

do some things different after that and you should be fine.at least thats how i have gotten around these issues. i usually keep about 10 save points that i rotate through.

I had two saves. The auto and one named Papal. I lost the autosave when I went back to play another faction for a turn or two to test things unfortunately. I usually got a couple saves named 'backup' and 'battle-siege' as well but I didnt use them for my Papal faction unfortunately. This time I'll keep a couple extra saves just in case. I'm hoping its just a one time fluke. Had it happen once in the vanilla game back before patch v1.1 came out.

Papal states can be easily played in vanilla. It's a simple matter of editing the Desc_strat file and cut papacy from unplayable to playable in the top of the file. Make a backup first just in case...

Or you could download an excellent mod like bugfixerPure from this site!
