can someone advise what to activate /deactivate that allows you to see the whole map from the start, ie whose army is where and thus fightimg who, iwouls also like to turn off the rather tedious intro and go straight to the action clouds of war?

You didn't define which Total War you are playing:

STW/MTW:matteosartori

RTW/M2TW:toggle_fow

For Rome and M2 press the tilde button (~) and it opens the console, enter it there.

Press the key with the following symbols on it ¬` and then type into the console toggle_fow. To close the console press the key again. To hide the map repeat previous actions.

Exactly.

Hmm tries this myself, pressing ~ key nothing happens, pressing `¬ key on Rome brings down a box that you can enter word/script, on Med2 its the '@ key that does it ? have I got a unique version ? also typing in those comands for Rome and Med 2 does nothing at all.

Yeah it does Throb, i use them ALL the time and they work ALL the time!

Throb, it's not the ~ key but the ` key (the key under escape, pressed without shift held)

It still works even with the shift key pressed

It's bad practice though, as in many games it doesn't.
