Woman charged with malicious castration

Sat Dec 30, 6:50 AM ET

LILLINGTON, N.C. - A woman attacked a man in his genitals during a Christmas party, injuring him badly enough that he needed 50 stitches, authorities said Friday. Rebecca Arnold Dawson, 34, was charged with malicious castration in a fight early Tuesday at a party hosted by the 38-year-old man's girlfriend, police said.

All three were heavily intoxicated, police Chief Frank Powers said.

Dawson is accused of grabbing the man's genitals. Police said a weapon was not used. He declined to elaborate.

"I believe he needed more than 50 stitches to repair the damage, but he is back home at this point," police Cpl. Brad Stevens said. "All we can tell you is that the injury was done with her hands."

Dawson does not have a listed phone number.

State law describes malicious castration as cutting off, maiming or disfiguring a person's genitals with the intent to hurt or render the victim impotent.

Dawson, who was released Wednesday on $50,000 bond, also was charged with offenses including assault causing serious bodily injury.

The castration arrest was the first of its kind in Lillington, a town of about 3,000 roughly 30 miles south of Raleigh, Powers said.

This is one to keep an eye on for the backstory. There's gotta be a novel in there somewhere. :beam:

Isn't that about where the mythical town of Mayberry is supposedly located?

Agreed, but I was just trying to erect a pillar of positiveness about this sad affair. One must detach oneself from the bad to see the good. :inquisitive:

I fear the victim was detached quite enough from himself. :shocked2:

The real story would have been if it was the second arrest.

"Now entering Lillington, with a 1 in 1500 chance of never entering anywhere else again."

What puzzles me is how on earth the crime of malicious castration got into the lawbooks. Has this happened before with sufficient frequency to merit such a specific charge? Did the lawmakers thoroughly discuss the matter before passing the law?

After reading the description of 'malicious castration,' it sounds like the state needs to make a distinction between 'malicious castration' and 'attempted malicious castration.' I'm left uncertain just how bad to feel for this guy.

Oh, I don't know. If I was making a set of laws entirely from scratch, "malicious castration is absolutely out" would be one of the first.

Still though knowing the wonderful justice system. I'll bet the women gets substantially less of a punishment then the nearly castrated man does.

Update: (http://www.wilmingtonstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070106/NEWS/701060353/-1/State)

Lawyer: Woman to plead not guilty in castration

Lillington | A woman charged with castrating a man at a Christmas Eve party intends to plead not guilty to that charge and others, her attorney said.

Rebecca Arnold Dawson, 34, of Lillington, is innocent of the charges of attacking Kevin Russ, 38, and castrating him with her hands, attorney Jason Wunsch said Thursday.

Dawson is charged with malicious castration, which North Carolina law describes as cutting off, maiming or disfiguring a person's genitals with the intent to hurt or render the victim impotent.

She also is charged with assault causing serious bodily injury, malicious conduct by a prisoner and injury to personal property. She will plead not guilty to those charges as well, Wunsch said.

"This case has received a substantial amount of attention from the media," Wunsch said. "Ms. Dawson, therefore, requests that the media and public not judge her until all the facts of this case have been put forth."

Russ was treated and released from Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital. Dawson was released from the Harnett County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond.

Dawson is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause hearing Jan. 17.I'm just dying to know how exactly one goes about pleading not guilty after ripping a man's bits off. I don't think the jury is going to bite.

[edit]

Hmm, this also raises the question, can one engage in non-malicious castration in North Carolina? Just asking ...

I'm glad for him that the damage isn't permanent. (or at least, that's what I can make of the article). He must be blessed, I can't dismiss this as chance.

Sure it can:
North Carolina law describes malicious castration as cutting off, maiming or disfiguring a person's genitals with the intent to hurt or render the victim impotent.

It could happen during an accident. Out-of-control Chainsaw anyone?

Or

It could happen accidentally. Maybe a SM game gone awry?

But I'm very curious how she will trie toprove her innocence in these:

She also is charged with assault causing serious bodily injury, malicious conduct by a prisoner and injury to personal property.
