No, it went out and I heard screams.

I think it might have been a shot from one of your catapults at which the game had an error and played to wrong sound file

Actually it wasn't.

I told my Ballista to attack a cavalry unit. The cavalry unit hid, so my ballista kept firing. That means I have a magic ballista.

It may be that the troops that just hit were at some point were visible, but because they were also supposedly hidden in the trees they will appear and then disappear based on the proximity of your units.

I've seen this kind of anomaly several times in forrest battles

It's good fun shooting arrows at the single visible unit in some trees and seeing all the little blood clouds coming out of nowhere when you hit a hidden unit by mistake. I've killed half armies without ever seeing them, just fire at the generals unit and `accidentaly` kill everyone near them.

The great thing is that they just stay there 'coz they think they are still hidden.

Yeah thats prob what happend, happens often in forrest battles where you cant see the enemy units before you get real close.

Just yesterday I annihilated half an army hiding in the forest, sniping away at the general with my Trebuchets. From time to time I would sneak in some cav to see how I was doing. I found that if you leave Trebuchets on fire at will, they will keep shooting at invisible units if these were visible before: Send in some fast cav so you see the enemy, tell the Trebuchet to fire at a formerly-hidden unit, withdraw cav, enemy unit "disappears", Trebuchet keeps firing at it!

How did you get that formation/menu bar across the top of the screen? I've never noticed it before!

I think that's the minimal UI - there's an option to enable it. IIRC, you don't see the bar unless you put your mouse there. It's nice for making more of the action visible on the screen (good for screenshots), but it can be irksome when you want to click on something towards the top of the screen and you can't because the menu bar appears instead.
