View Full Version : Using Modem + Sound Card = Blue Screen of Death

I have 56k modem and Audigy sound card. Everytime I connected to the internet and use any sound-producing software (Winamp, DVD, games, etc) my PC will instantly crash. However, when I switch to using on-built motherboard audio, things will just go smooth, no crash, no annoyances. But when I switch back using sound card, tadaa! Blue screen again! Seems like there's conflict of interest between the two :argue: Anyway here's what I have done, and ultimately failed:
- Switch the position of modem (PCI)
- Switch the position of the Audigy sound card
- Switch both
- Turning off modem sound
- Trying to install latest driver (this one even cause my Windows to die...)

And here's my spec:

Windows XP Pro SP2
Pentium 4 2600 MHz
1 GB RAM
Audigy sound card (duh)
HIS X800 PRO Radeon
DirectX 9.0c

:help:

Have you checked in device manager? Are any resource conflicts apparent? (conflicts with those few devices on a newish machine running XP, are highly unlikely). I would say it could be a driver bug. Have you tried installing the soundcard alone with the lates drivers, and then downloading a different generic driver for the modem and installing that afterwards?

Did you check in your BIOs setup to see if any resources might be reserved?

Try to identify the modem chipset exactly, if you post it up here and any other info you can find on the board I'll try and find you a driver. Also which audigy is it, there are several different kinds? Creative Labs drivers are notorious for being bloated and buggy.

Yes

No

Yes, it caused my PC to die soon after...not the best solution I think...

Not sure what that means, I did check BIOS several times though to turn off/on the on-board audio just to see how it effects the system, but still.

I believe it's PROLINK modem from where God knows

Yeah, notorious too for killing my PC...it's Sound Blaster Audigy (not version 2 a.k.a SB Audigy 2). Those drivers in Creative Labs website can be quite misleading, sometimes they don't even recognize my own sound card...

Indentification. Google the part number and ensure you know exactly which card it is. You say they sometimes don't recognise the card at all? Is this when you're trying to install or just randomly after rebooting, once the driver has already been installed?

It only recognized my sound card with fresh driver (the one in CD that came with the box), but once I updated it with drivers (I mean every available driver related to my Sound Blaster Audigy) from Creative website, it suddenly didn't recognize my sound card at all! No matter how many times I reboot, it looked like they had amnesia or something. Worse, my modem BSOD problem still exist. I read that some folks on other tech support forum have similiar problem and had no solution too.

Anyway, here's info about my sound card driver (I got it from Device Manager):

Driver Provider: CREATIVE
Driver Date : 7/8/2005
Driver Version : 5.12.1.512
Driver Signer : Microsoft Windows Hardware......(you know the rest)

Note that it was fresh driver from CD

Can you remove the card from your system and try to identify the exact model, revision etc by googling the part number on the card?

I might be able to do that few days later when I get in touch with my PC. BTW, I don't know how's revision and part number can help?? Maybe you could be more explicit on this? :dizzy2:

The revision and part number will help to discern, via a google search, if anyone else has had similar problem with that exact board. This can save alot of time. It also ensure that you are downloading the correct driver, which as you've been having problems with drivers is another issue.

Power supply issues maybe?

caravel

I can't imagine it would be a power issue. The amount of power consumed by a 56k internal pci windmodem is negligible. Soundcards aren't big power hogs either. The biggest consumers are usually your Graphics card, SDRAM, HDD's and of course the CPU itself.

What's the latest with this Tran?

Okay I am a loss here, there are lots of numbers here on the modem card, so I guess I'll just post every numbers that are listed and maybe you can help me identify which one is the important numbers and perhaps offer a fresh solution ~:)

Back part of modem:

Tested To Comply
With FCC Standard
FOR HOME OFFICE USE
This devise complies with part 68 FCC rules
FCC REG No:3P7MM08BDFM562IS
REN AC 0.8(B) USOC JACK RJ11C

D-Link

S/N: ES05263022559
H/W Ver.:D1
DFM-5621S/SG

then on the right part of back

Front part of modem:

D-Link DFM-5621S/SG, based on Connexant CX11252-41Z chipset. That winmodem is supported natively by XP and unlikely to be the problem. The soundcard is probably where you need to be looking, not the modem.

I'm assuming, from your previous posts, that the soundcard works fine with the modem removed?

Yes, that's true. I'll take a look at the sound card and report it later.

Have you tried switching the cards around in various PCI slots? They're not all equal, an some cards (think Creative) are pickier about slots than others.

That was my first thought, though he has said that he's already tried that.

Okay, here's what I have found on the sound card:

Front part of the sound card:

Trade name: Creative Labs
Model Number:SB0570
Tested To Comply
With FCC Standard
FOR HOME OR OFFICE USE
Complies with Canadian ICES-003 Class B
Serial No: MASB0570542007143Z

then there's this 'numbers' on right side of this:
N10225
and
D33022

and there's circle sticker with these figures:
IT 1
C94
PASS

Back part of the sound card:

CREATIVE
CA0106-DAT
CREATIVE TECH '02

MODEL : SB0570

caravel

The SB0570 is the Audigy SE. For this card you need these (http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp?MainCategory=1&nRegionFK=&nCountryFK=&nLanguageFK=&sOSName=Windows+XP&region=1&Product_Name=Audigy+SE&Product_ID=14257&modelnumber=&driverlang=1033&OS=10&drivertype=0&x=21&y=16) drivers. When installing try to avoid installing all of the applications, control panels and other rubbish. Just install the driver. Remove your old driver first (and any other creative control panels or software), shut down, remove the card and boot up. Then install the new driver, shutdown, reinstall the card and start up again. If this doesn't resolve your problem then I would advise you to get rid of the internal modem and invest in an external V.92 56K serial modem, a real modem (I'm assuming that Cable/DSL is not possible for you), such as the one at the very bottom of this page (http://www.zoom.com/products/dial_up_external_serial.html).

Cambyses II thank you very much for your time and effort for helping me from the beginning of this thread. Two thumbs for you :2thumbsup:  I hope my Audigy sound card can work in harmony after this, if not, then I guess I'll have to upgrade my PC part soon
