View Full Version : Unlocking factions .... is the natural game method broken ?

Now, before anyone mentions - yes I've read the Tips & F.A.Q and seen how to "cheat" and unlock factions by altering the code.

But .....

I've completed my first short campaign as France ( may as well have been a long one since I got embroiled in multiple disputes and ended up with approx 30 territories ! ) but when I went to start another grand campaign I was still only given the option of choosing the 5 starter factions.

Anyone else experienced this ? Is there a bug in patch 1.1 that prevents players from progressing to using all factions on completion of a campaign ?

Thanks for your help and comments - in anticipation.

I'm pretty sure you have to beat a long campaign first to open them up.

Really ? I was 99.9% certain that it was any Grand campaign - long or short. Anyone able to confirm this ?

It needs to be a long campaign to unlock all of them. According to the FAQ on these forums if you destroy a faction you also unlock them?

Yes, destroying a faction definitely lends to its availability in another campaign. But, I've read several instances of players who have had all factions available after completing a short campaign. Either they are spreading misinformation, or something is broken ..somehow:dizzy2:

Ok, I've worked it out and finally got the game to unlock the other factions upon completion of my French short campaign. Immediately after achieving the victory movie I had to elect to play on in that campaign to unlock the other factions. If I simply just chose to stop play at that point, the game doesn't seem to recognise the victory conditions have been met and keeps the other factions locked.

Seems like a bug to me ....

To me too.

It's good that you got it working though - it should help other people with the same problem.

I can confirm that it is possible to unlock the factions by completeing a short campaign. I did it with the English.

i just finished my first campaing, short with english, and nothing new was unlocked...none of the factions I defeated or any other factions. I'm using v1.1, since it's not working, i'll just use the work around...bah!

I made the same mistake on my first short campaign with Venice. I'm glad you found the solution, because I was quite confused. However, in the course of my campaign, I had defeated Milan and the Byzantines (as per the victory conditions), so does anybody know why those factions were not unlocked? Of course, in the end I just unlocked them the quick and dirty way.

i did the same thing the first time, but i reloaded the turn before i beat the short campaign, beat it, then played another turn and it still didn't work...maybe it has something to do with v1.1 or v1.0...?

I unlocked them by finishing a English short campaign back when I first got the game. Far as I know it doesnt need to be a long campaign.

It is supposed to unlock all playable factions by winning a short campaign. It worked fine for me. Finished a Spanish short back when I got the game and all the factions were then playable.

That is odd. In my game (completly unpatched and unmodded), I haven't even completed a campaign (meaning I'm in the middle of my current first campaign, and I can start a completly new campaign and have Milan and Scotland as a starting choice. I expected to have Egypt, because they have also been eliminated (by the Mongols). It's important to note that I didn't defeat Milan, they just got killed off by the Black Death. I was threatened by the Pope with excom if I attacked Milan, and was waiting it out, and then got a notice that the Pope didn't care what happened to Milan anymore because they no longer existed.

In any event, it seems that I can atleast start a new campaign with either Scotland or Milan without having to finish off my current English campaign. I'm currently looking forward to eliminating the Danes.

sounds like a patched game vs. non patched game issue...mine was patched and i didn't get the choice. Seems like most people who are not patched have it working fine...

Completed short campaign with hre with a patched game and haven't messed around with any of the files. Stopped on gaining victory conditions and unlocked all factions fine.

I am still within my first within my first campaign (with the HRE) and when I go to the menu to start a new campaign, I can now choose between the default factions plus the factions that I have destroyed during my current campaign (Danes, Hungary, Scots).

My army is building up to conquer Rome so I will have completed this campaign shortly, and if I read this thread correctly that will also unlock all of the other factions.
I find that a bit of a shame to be honest, because it seems quite a challenge to destroy all factions one by one and that way get the full scope of the game by achievement (except papal states, mongols etc. that is). So I would prefer it to be the 'natural' way. People that donot feel they are up to this challenge could then resort to the easiest mod there is in this game.

:holmes: :holmes: Yep it is true when i tried to unlock the factions playing as england in a short campaigne they were not open and in many places i heard that finishing the game on a short campaigne was supposed to unlock them. I suppose that there is a bug involved :holmes:

First, I believe its the short campaign and although I was cheating to test game mechanics, I did beat the short campaign and it opened them up.

NO, I think is great to have to unlock them. I think it gives something to EARN and a reason to keep playing. I wish you had to destroy a faction ONLY to unlock them, not just beat the game. This way, I would have a bigger reason to destroy Egypt or take on the Aztecs when that comes up.

Not sure if you are adressing me, Budwise, but if you read carefully you will see that you are actually agreeing with what I said...
