I recently downloaded EB and started a campaign as the Romani it was all going well until the year 233, i managed to conquer southern italy and have some holdings in Greece. However recently I have faced constant invasion from Averni, Sweboz and Getai, who somehow constanly send full stack armies against me every turn, putting my three legions in constant strain. And i just cant see anyway to do anything else other then survive, as all my income is constantly spent on retraining my legions. The setting i am on is H/H, and i have only just found out the best setting is VH/M. So i want to know what everyones advice for my campaign is, should i start again on VH/M? Download the Force Diplomacy mod and sue for peace? Or keep plugging it out and hope i can somehow turn the tide?
Thanks, Caesar89

1. blitz them
2. or restart playin VH/M (which wont make a difference to spamming)
3. or use the force diplomacy mod
4. or use one of the money scripts found in the mods section

You can also use the toggle_fow console command to lift the fog of war to take a picture of the whole map easily - just press tilde, the key under the Esc key, type toggle_fow into the console and press enter. Repeat to replace the fog.

I have been thinking about keeping up the Forced Diplomacy on Sweboz, because as you can see they are a huge headache, leaving one legion to defend my borders with the Averni, and striking at the Getai with my 2nd Italian legion, my Greek legion and a half stack new legion to bring my hostile frontiers down. I know this may be considered cheating by some, but its my only option!
Get money script, you are facing infinite stacks of Sweboz mercenaries and other units as it looks like ...
all 3 of them are good in cutting AI's capability to flood you with huge amount of armies ....

Caesar I faced exactly the same problem as you in a Roman campaign on VH/M neverending attacks in .8. by same three factions(all three allied against me): what I have found in all the ROman campagins I have played if you expand too slow the barbarian nations tend to gang up on you because are their surrounding the REbel cities are eventually taken! THis has occured most times times in all the roman campaigns I have played.. but .81 I have had best campagin so far! i played much more agressively(but not blitzing still using 10 stack legions and consul legions) instead of being to historitical(eg timeline) i went bit quicker- that way I already had a good encomony and Spain pretty secure by the time Barbarian nations had taken their rebel cities gaul nation has take dominace
I also aided the Arverni to balance the growth of the arveni and furthermore with the Sweboz- Its 201 and in year 260 was when I had a ceasefire. My campaign map is much better and Arerni Aedui have not even attacked me in my entire campaign(despite their size), which I found very strange its 190's now wiht Marian reform im going to wipe out the Aeduinow and Im going to wipe out the Aedui, areveni are doen for
I suggest like Kalwerk- using add_money (in console = RomeShell) or force diplomacy script and you will be fine, if you border with them every now when they are looking threating(not to late!!!!) give them tributes like 100 for 20-30 turns
this is my campaign map at 200bc

Thanks for the advice!
mlp071 I was looking at the money script thread before, but i gotta admit i got really confused, which would you say is the best and easiest to implement?
Tempesta, did you pay them the 100 tribute straight off are did you just get lucky and they never attacked you to start with?
They are all good , just use any of them. Only one i know is redone for v2 patch is Redmeth's one though .
That doesn't mean that others are not good either. So just read explanations on first page about what they are doing and choose which one you think will fit you best.
I am personaly using all 3 in 3 different campaings(taking it slowly so i don't get sick of same units :laugh4: )....
Your other issue are mercs , Sweboz has 3 or 4 provinces that can get half a stack each , every 3-4 turns , plus other ones, and thats roughly 1-2 stacks every 1-2 turns. At least with money script they will stop mass producing units, and most likely just buy mercs.
and yeah , on VH/M 100 mnai won't cut it , try 200 or more , but once AI sets his mind on attacking you they will accept it then attack you again. So Force diplomacy is your best friend to keep 2 out of 3 at bay in this game, while you demolishing 3rd one.
good luck :2thumbsup:

Why dont you upload your game and let anyone try to come out of this difficult position. It would be a challenging campaign:beam:

For the money scripts do you just copy and paste the things from the first page into you EB file?
sure i would do that! only i dont know how, as you can tell i dont know all too much about this sort of thing. So if you were to give me instructions I would be more then happy to upload it

Download the script, then place it in EB/scripts/show_me. When it asks you if you want to overwrite, then you know you've got it in the right place.

just put the money script into my EB folder, but since then it wont let me reactivate the background script (or whatever its called) is this a serious problem?
Yes it is. That's a lot of functionality disabled.

is there any way to fix the problem?
Well try another one of the scripts in the thread, maybe the one you downloaded has a problem, to the best of my knowledge my latest script found on the last page works.
If not I hope you backed up your original file...
I don't know if the version you're playing matters but the scripts are tested on 0.81a and 0.81a2

A peace of advice. I used to have problems like this when I was making the money script. Delete the entire script folder of EB. Then create a new folder with the same name and within that folder, a new folder with the name show_me. Open that and place one of the downloaded money scripts inside.
Restart EB and see if it works again.
I don't know why but sometimes the modified scriptfile that I worked with didn't allow the activation of the script if I just replaced the damn file. Deleting the whole folder and recreating them and then placing a modified EBBS file however did. Don't ask me how. It just did.

Phew! managed to fix the problem quite easy in the, just downloaded th new patch, and script and the problem was fixed.
Quick update on me campaign; finally got a steady truce with the Sweboz and Averni who are both campaigning on the opposite of their empires. My attack on the Getai is going well, got them down to three province and i have two legions at my disposal! Not everythings been going my way though, Carthage attacked Rhegion forcing me to divert my Northern Italy legion, I've had to major battles with them in the south, they sent two full stack elite armies against me. But i dispatched of them much easier then i expected!
I find if stay West of the Adriatic the Sweboz dont attack- but as soon as I move East they come at me in droves.

It is important for the roman economy to have high trade income. Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia and the Baleares should be high priority in the beginning.

I agree with kalkwerk.
Another advice I'd give is to better plan which areas you attack. In the beginning when you don't have much money go for the south of Italy and then for the islands and Carthaginian lands. 2 armies should be enough for Africa or the Carthi lands in Spain plus some stacks of cheap skirmishers for garrisons.
The thing is to always attack the areas in the right order. What I mean is, as long as you don't have enough money for more than 2 or 3 legions, use most of the money for building up your towns and try to conquer in the way that no areas are in danger and the enemy can only attack you there where you have your armies. do you know what I mean?
On your map you conquered the areas down the Balkans and then went into Dacian lands. Now you have 5 areas there which all share boarders with at least 1 enemy and you are lucky if the Greeks or Macedonians don't attack you from the south. this means you need all troops and money for defence.
To explain what I mean: for example, you only need 2 armies for Africa and you'd save lots of money AND still be very quick. Land one army near Carthago, one near Hadrumetum, capture both, move in some cheap garrisons and then proceed with one army towards Hippo with the other towards Lepcis, like this you can proceed and intercept any Carthaginian armies heading for your new towns, but you save lots of money because you don't need strong garrisons and voilĂ you got Africa, same thing with Spain (landing in the South near Carthagena and Gader as they can only be counterattacked from 1 direction). Like this you save a lot of money because you only have few towns sharing a boarder with the enemy. Once you got that you can build 5 armies to go to Greece (1 army lands at Sparta, one at Thermon, one at Dyrhachium, the other 2 proceed to Pella and one of the other towns). that's the best way to do it imho. always try to limit your boarders.

Caesar: I always give tribute to every nation(at least once continually if necessarily if I border them it helps so much to contain AI agression rather than just relying on a huge garrison or army to deter em. I think 50-200 is acceptable
i usually just be cheap and give em 100 for 20 turns,k seems to work
To answer your second part: after I took the mediolam town in late 260's i declared ceasefire they accepted(with gift of course). From here after this ceasefire, after some turns i then gave gave them a tribute and probably 3 more times
you just need spys on your borders and at least a half stack defending main border towns for deterrence. Further in campagin a greater will be required(in this regioin). SO if you see some big stacks suddenly piled on your border PUT them in line and place a strong garrision- when they go reduce it again
Perhaps what helped me was i left Massila for the gauls to take(every other time I have taken it- allowing me to concentrate my defence) wasnt until i think 198 till grabbed it- declared war after they would not sell it to me or give my a tribute(beginning my assault on the gauls-Aedui)
I think EB could have in the script an option that gave your bordering factions 200 every turn... Just so the AI would respect aliances.
Cheers...
If you look in the script, you'll see that we give the AI factions a lot more than 200 per turn. It does not change their attitude unless you are doing it by diplomacy.
I meant by diplomacy not andling money like that. I ment something that made the AI think it recieved a gift from the player.
Cheers...
Oh ok. It's the tought that counts ;)
Cheers...

My favorite way to take down a strong country especially later in the campaign when they have tons and tons of money/people to throw at you is to take your invasion force depending on the size of the enemy, but continuous besiege and assault cities and simply exterminate them and withdraw. One of my favorite tactics it really messes them up financially, you can also destroy buildings while you control it such as their barracks. Great way to lay waste to an enemy.

The war agaisnt the Carthagians has been the most interesting yet and has led to a wider central, southern european war as Carthage try the move their armies against me.
I managed to beat of the intital 3 stacks they sent against south Italy but as i was retraining my legion they quickly built up smaller armies and took the Rhegion, Taras and Arpi. So i quickly built up anothern half stack army, and with my fully retrained legion i lauched a major counter-attack, this coincided with Taras rebelling back to me(a huge bit of luck!) so i was quickly able to regain control of Southern Italy!
At the same time, Sweboz betrayed the Averni and attacked them, as did Carthage, forcing the Gauls to ally with me. Thus creating two warring factions in europe The Central Powers (Averni+Romani) Vs The Empire Alliance (Sweboz+Carthage)
I recently managed to subdue the Getai and force them into a ceasefire with only two cities left so I now have another legion on their way to kick Carthage out of their med islands, while keeping another in Greece to keep the provinces secure!
