After having my Casse generals die in the 60-70 bracket and thinking back to RTR as the Romans where I think 70-85 was the norm. I was wondering...

1. How is/was lifespan (ie age at which characters die) dealt with in the RTW engine.
2. Has EB modified or adjusted or completely and radically changed any of this.

And, for a more broad in-depth question, how would human rights, health, poverty etc. of the ancient world rate in comparison to the present day situation, especially in developing countries.

60-70 is fine for a general. The poorer people of course died quite a bit sooner - mostly due to poor health care.
60 to 70 years is not bad even by today's standards (where medicine and health care have considerably raised the average maximum age), although in some poor countries such as African or some Middle-Eastern states, the maximum age is still around 50 (!).

Basically, aging has more to do with your surroundings, health, nutritioning and possible injuries than genes. I suppose you could say that as the life of the Casse or other "barbarians" was somewhat harsher, their maximum age should be lower than that of, say, Greek nobility - i'm not sure if this is reflected in EB unfortunately

I hope that helped a little

I am under the impression that everything related to characters dying is hard-coded. Correct me if I'm wrong, but after the 62nd birthday the engine starts to check every turn if a character dies. If RTR does not have 4 turns per year it results in older family members as there is less turns to die in. In EB 70 year old character has (70-64)*4 = 24 turns to die in, but in 2 tpy systems only 12 turns.

yeah eventhough they might live a lot, trying to move those characters is pain in the a**. They are usually very restricted and they comedown with the "confined to bed" trait.

Thanks for that. The whole 2t v 4t makes sense.

I asked the latter question because I always am disgruntled (what a cool word :laugh4: ) when people idealise the past, especially wars. I see a lot of this in the fantasy books I have read, usually based on Medieval Europe. I always try to remind myself how much better we have it than other developing countries and our ancestors.
