First of all this is probably the wrong place entirely to ask this question so my deepest apologies. However, I won't be able to rest until I find this out.

Around 5 years a friend of mine gave me a book to read, or more precisely park of a series to read. I remember really enjoying it, but I can't remember what its called. I was hoping somebody could help me.

Although not an 'historical' book, it is set in an 'historical' world of technology so it seems likely that someone on this forum may have read it.

This where it gets complicated, because I only remember sparse bits of it. I remember that to the north of this fantasy land was a wall that kept wild/mutant animals out. (This may have been the 'winter wall', becuase beyond it was nothing but cold tundra). I also remember that there was a civil war in this land between the handsome younger brother and the dour older brother and heir whose main ally was the 'Onion Lord'. While there was also a scheming, Machiavelli-esque figure who was a crippled dwarf, but I forget his exact role.

I also remember that in another 'country' a member of the previous royal family was gathering a mercenary army of horseman to help him reclaim the throne.

I appreciate that this is probably no help at all to most people, but I hope that somebody, somewhere has read this book/series and can help me find the title.

Again, apologies, i've probably broken all the mods forums, but please don't punish me, I mean no harm!

Punish him! Punish him!

But more seriously, that sounds like A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.

Yep, the series you are talking about is A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin. The best fantasy series ever written IMHO. (Yes, that includes Tolkien.)

You won't regret it. Once you get about halfway through the first book, you won't be able to do anything with your life except read them all.

One small word of warning, though: the books are not shy about sex. It is not gratuitous or excessive, but it happens and it is described. Just FYI.

Well, that's the first fantasy book I will have read with a more adult theme. They tend to avoid those subjects, allowing younger readers to read them. Anyway, the books will arrive on February...when are we going to develop teleportation..:wall:

That's precisely one of the things that makes the series great IMO. They address serious adult issues in a serious manner. Nothing is easy, nothing is black and white. It is mostly cut-throat politics, intrigue, and battle in a very unique world. Above all, it is totally unpredictable. Tolkien never would have killed off Frodo, and that is why a Song of Ice and Fire is superior. :2thumbsup:
