View Full Version : World's Best Mouse?

My wife bought me a Logitech MX Revolution (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/mice/devices/130&cl=us,en) for the holidays, and I have to say I am blown away by it. I have avoided wireless mice for a long time, because they have all seemed heavy to me. This one isn't at all. It is remarkably light, comes with more buttons than you can shake a stick at (necessary for a FPS gamer like me), and the ergonomic design is near perfect. My only criticism is that the thumb buttons could have been slightly larger. More than anything else, though, I have to single out the (main) scroll wheel for its pure brilliance. It has two methods of operation, a ratchet system for precision scrolling and a free-rotating method for fast scrolling. Best of all, the mouse software has a smart system that automatically switches between the two methods based on how fast you spin the wheel. A slow touch scrolls slowly and smoothly though everything, while a simple gentle flick of my finger sends the page spinning at high speed. You can even configure the point of switchover to correspond to your own preferences. It really do find it incredible. I haven't been this impressed by a peripheral in... well... ever.

Has anyone else tried one of these?

That's definitely a nice mouse, but I dunno about "World's best mouse" :beam:

In college I had an old MS Explorer that worked great for the longest time, it broke right about the time Logitech came out with the MX510. Bought one on a whim, and it blew me away how smooth and responsive it was. Also bought the 518 when it came out, and now I have a G5 wired laser mouse, most likely going to get a G9 sometime in the near future. The other gaming mice from MS and Razr never really sat well with me either, in fact I found the Razr mice to be rather unergonomic for extended use.

The wireless mice are really nice, but I never was able to get used to them, because I'm one of the few people who notice that slight delay in response time. Doesn't bother the majority of people, but it annoyed me.

No argument there. We also just got a Harmony 880 remote and it's bloody incredible. As soon as they start making a full-sized version of this thing (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/192&cl=us,en), I'm getting one as well. I like it a great deal already, but I really need a keypad.

Oh I love Logitech mice because they basically scream "Hey you can save a lot of money because we're all for right-handed people anyway"...... :juggle2:

I personally have a Razer Krait and I'm very happy with it, it's symmetrical, has three buttons including the scrollwheel and you can move it around accurately.

I've played around with the Logitech mouse before. The scroll wheel is very unique to say the least.

However, on my primary PC at home I use a Razer Copperhead (http://www.razerzone.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_17&products_id=11) that I'm pretty happy with. :2thumbsup:

Nice. Looks good for shooters.

I'm still happy with my Logitech MX518, but a wireless mouse does look handy. By the by, will a wireless mouse work if I have my tower on the floor?

Yep, that's where mine is.

I dunno, worrying about recharging my mouse or keyboard sounds like the kind of fun you'd have at a llama insemination party. Not much, in other words. (Unless you're into that kind of thing ...)

Gimme corded everything (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/mice/devices/187&cl=us,en), dang it!*

Bleh, wireless novelty acts. Wired to the death! I lurv my MX 510. I've used other mice, including the Revolution, but they all pale in comparison.

I've been an A4Tech whore ever since we bought our first 'puter, which was 8 years ago. This one (http://www.a4tech.com/en/product2.asp?CID=1&SCID=8&MNO=WOP-49Z) is a slightly advanced version of my current, apparently outdated babe.

For the record, I have been a wired fanatic as well up until this mouse. Recharging isn't an issue. I've left the thing off the charger for 3 days before and it was still fine. I try to remember to hang it up when I go to bed at night, and if I do that takes care of any recharging, but even if I don't it isn't a major problem. The battery's weight was what really turned me off the most about wireless for a long time, but the MX Revolution isn't heavy at all. Yes, it's still heavier than a wired mouse, but it feels balanced, not heavy.

My desire for a wireless keyboard is following a trend where my entire house has started losing wires due to WiFi and wireless gadgets. I feel like I'm on a crusade against the evil wires now. For the Greater Good! lol

Not only are there possible dangers to your health(well, neither are they proven nor disproven but then it was the same about X-Rays and nuclear explosions until the dangers were proven) but you also confuse all the bees and do your part in depleting our hones and food supply. I'm all for new technology but wireless is made by the devil I tell you!

*recounts memories of his dad's wireless mouse failing clicks in action games and the WLan connection breaking while sitting 2m away from the router...*

Here at my home everything is wired except my cellphone(but that seems to be turned off right now...). :2thumbsup:

*edits post with memories of satellite TV cards and receivers failing to find important channels until one buys a newer piece of hardware...*

never been to llama insemination part but cordless mice or keyboards with batteries (which always give up in middle of game / large document) drive me round the bend - and I can't really see the point - exactly how far away from your monitor can you be and still do anything useful?

I used to love the logitech mice (great shape if you're right handed) but couldn't find a corded one last time I had to buy one, so have basic-ish microsoft mice and keyboard now as they were only reasonable wired bits I could find.

(still trying to understand above post about bees though :dizzy2:)

Hehe, there was this erm, news coverage a few months ago about bees disappearing through out the western world. Apparently through simple tests they found out that cellphones would utterly confuse the little things as they orientate using the magnetic field of our planet and cellphones(and most other wireless devices) send out electromagnetic waves which do apparently confuse the heck out of the bees' internal navigation system so it seems that they simply get lost in the wilderness until they die because they cannot find the way back to their hives.

I'm not sure whether this has been 100% proven but it wouldn't surprise me seeing the explosion in the amount of wireless devices lately and on TV they showed how a bee would completely mess up this directional dance they do if they'd hold a cellphone close to it. The problem is that bees not only produce honey but are also vital for the reproduction of a lot of plants which may die out if there are no bees to carry their seeds(or was it pollen?) around. some people even spoke of a nutrition problem for humanity although that sounded a bit like scaremongering. :sweatdrop:

Tried a couple of mouses, including Razor Boomslang. A simple PS2 logitch mouse (2 buttons, scrollwheel) suited best and that's been used for years. Changed that to a basic USB MS optical mouse recently: realising that the ball needed to be cleaned again became an ordeal.

I agree with Tosa. Those old mouses with balls were troublesome. It was my hobbit clean the mouse.

Now, I have the same mouse as Tosa have. An simple USB M$ mouse.

Or 5 minutes of urban legend bees cell phones

Yields:
Bees, Cell Phones, and Human Extinction (http://www.litmusmag.net/sin/index.html)

And … they’re off! The media, already starting to smell a good old-fashioned “fear culture” story with the bee disappearance, jumped all over this new connection as the next in a long line of stories exploiting our discomfort with complex modern technology. Throw the word “radiation” and “extinction” together with an electronic object we all hold up to our ears for minutes or hours per day, and you’ve got a crackin’ story, brother! A Google search of “bees AND cell phones” will tell you all you need to know about how fast the story spread around the internets, and the news portal Digg reports over 1300 hits for the original story, with an ensuing discussion that counter-proposes a “bee rapture” and bees’ ability to exist in six simultaneous dimensions as alternate CCD explanations.

There’s a less exciting rebuttal to the cell phone-bee relationship, however; The Independent just read the damn study wrong. A quick reading of Kimmel’s paper shows that 1) it was a small pilot study with very subtle results and 2) they didn’t even use freaking cellular phones in the study. What Kimmel and friends actually tested was the ability of cordless phone base stations that were actually placed inside beehives, to throw off the navigation of bees. Bees were marked as they were leaving their hives (not a fun job, I imagine), and then hives with implanted phone stations were compared to non-phoned-up hives to see how many bees came back. In the end, bees were less likely to return to the hives with the electromagnetic radiation-spouting cordless phone bases, but only by the slimmest of statistically significant margins: 63% for the control group vs. 55% in the experimental groups.

Obviously then, the jump from this short, humble little paper to “OH MY GOD CELL PHONES WILL KILL US ALL” requires a bit of creative license on the part of the newspaper. Caught in the middle were the researchers themselves, who were probably sitting around on April 14th muttering “nobody ever cares about our work” only to be wistfully recalling their long-lost obscurity by the 16th. As reported here and here and here, Kimmel and Kuhn were shocked by the distortion of their study, saying they never set out to study CCD, and bemoaning the media attention: “It's not my fault if people misinterpret our data,” said an obviously flustered Kimmel to the International Herald Tribune. “Ever since The Independent wrote their article, for which they never called or wrote to us, none of us have been able to do any of our work because all our time has been spent in phone calls and e-mails trying to set things straight. This is a horror story for every researcher to have your study reduced to this. Now we are trying to force things back to normal.”

I've added this site, anywhere which has science content, urban legends and a sense of humour as evidenced by referring to Science In the News as SIN.

With regards to the bee disappearance, maybe we're facing the same situation as in the Phillip K. Dick novel 'Do androids dream of electric sheep?', only without the nuclear war, and the owls being replaced with bees.

Sure, we laugh at it now as did the people in the Electric Sheep universe, but how long before all animals are dead?

Got my trusty MX1000 - most of the graphics on it are worn away... True, I forget to charge it now and then (having an adapter for a different country to the one I'm in makes it a little more emotional trying to get the little bars to start ticking up). Being the cheapskate I am, I'm going to keep it 'til it breaks down. Then, well, it's gotta be Logitech. Symmetrical mice irritate me, especially those that are small as well. This one's nice and big, and fits into my hand quite neatly.

I've been using these for near on a decade in their various incarnations and I've never found anything that feels (or looks) better. Two thumb buttons is all I need and they work perfectly for my hand.

That is what I switched away from. I was a big fan of the Intellimouse, though I preferred the old version with the larger thumb buttons. I have not had a good durability track record with them though, I've owned 3 in 7 years since the first two stopped working. One of the reasons I switched recently was that the third was also starting to act funny.
