Greetings once again fellow forum members!

All the photos should be working, finally. I've noticed that the last several 50 or so photos do not load properly right away for some reason. But they do in fact load if you give them a bit.

I don't think photobucket meant for so many hundreds of images to be posted at once, so this particular thread's first page will be sluggish.

I will be posting captions to the final page of the campaign soon, but I did that twice already and it kept erasing it. Odd...

Hopefully I can get a few comments on the front page so that we can get to page two and actually begin discussing it and not having to load the 600 images every time.

I don't think there's been a more massive battle report for a blitz campaign before... perhaps one with an epic hundred or so turns... but certainly not for 28 turns!

Needless to say, a lot of effort went in to each turn, battle, and screenshot posting. This was not a "build a new marketplace, click the end turn button" turtle campaign. This was all-out nail-biting blitz, perhaps at its finest.

Still haven't seen a challenge to the 28 turn record. If you can beat it, bravo!

I hope you don't beat it too soon, as this thing took weeks to prepare.

Indeed, the campaign was epic.

It is in danger of being overshadowed by SirRethcir's tactic of taking non-excommunicated Catholic faction's cities with crusading armies using a little-known loophole/exploit that I was unaware of.

Sadly, this campaign will one day be relegated to the dustbin of history... but for now, it makes me feel like walking around all day with a shirt with a big number one on it.

All hail, a great post. also i have a question, i've been playing for some months now and looked on this forum for quite some times, but i can't seem to find a effective guide for rushing on this massive scale.

do you even consider constructing buildings, i've seen like 1 shot with those mines, but do you get anything else like higher military, or economic buildings?

do you fight every fight yourself to get massive promotion of captains?

occupy for tax, sack for money, or exterminate for low garrison to continue to the next town. (in like 26 turns, i suppose sacking gives to max of cash)

do you use agents? (not even a single mention of a successful spy, killing trough assassination, or that priest that was uber converting)

diplomacy, do you actively search for allies in the begginning or just jump in if a diplomat of them comes to you?

also it's not stated, but is it correct that you seige always to attack the very next turn?

To answer a few of your points:

Firstly the 'massive scale rush', a lot of the framework for a successful blitz can be read on this thread here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=97814)

Buildings: I build a few on my rushes I have done, mainly churches and some public order buildings. I also knock down a lot of towns and make them castles, easier to control when moving fast.

Promotion: hit rebels/ai with a captain led greater army, frontload spears etc. Autoresolve is fine, the more territory you have, promotions gets easier. I didnt have much success promoting through sieges though. I found the larger the stack used, the higher the loyalty of the promoted captain, although this is just in my experience...

I always sack and ransom. You really need the sacking income to fuel the fire of the rush, especially in non-crusade times. No need to exterminate really, I can usually control the most troublesome settlement after a few turns, although in my turks game I had to build a fair few level2 mosques and have a massive Iman chain running across europe...

Agents: I dont really bother aside from priests and a few passive spies. Massive diplomacy on Rome is a must for a catholic faction because you will need to be in control of the pope to launch crusades. Basically every army should be fighting/seiging or moving between targets, agents get left a long way behind on the first crusade/jihad and your new territory will be building for control/troops for a while. ATPG successfully used multiple tiered alliance diplomacy for an early boost, selling alliance/trade/map/attacks to 5-6 neighbours.

Finally yes I will siege one turn/attack next as a rule, some exceptions may be same turn attacks in europe with ballistas, but generally siege engines are too slow to lug around on a blitz unless its local.

BTW top thread ATPG from what I can download of it, perhaps pare it down into a general campaign overview report and then add dedicated strategy writeups might make it a bit more accessible :beam: My broadband is fairly ninja and is struggling with it, or perhaps photobuckets bandwidth has a headache?

I love having my threads quoted independently, especially as reference material. I award you a gold star.

Buildings: I build a few on my rushes I have done, mainly churches and some public order buildings. I also knock down a lot of towns and make them castles, easier to control when moving fast.

First priority is any building which will assist the rush itself. If you are to USE ballista (rare) you need to build an artillery range, which is time consuming. Ballista are not mercenary units and therefore not recruitable in your blitz campaign, thus if you need them to rush, you need them immediately.
Next, castles and stables for your MUCH needed heavy cavalry units. You can mercenary all else, and sometimes cavalry too, but merc cavalry is far too expensive unless it's crusader cavalry. You need something you can recruit, too.

Next, if you're gonna do any diplomacy whatsoever, you need a town hall in the proper and efficient location. So build it, quickly.

Next, public order but especially money is your concern. If you need to raise taxes, but public order isn't high enough, build a town hall and kill three birds with one stone. Raise public order, taxes, and diplomats. Converting to a castle also raises public order, improves defense, and allows better recruitment, killing three birds with another stone.

Most of your money will be maxed out spent on units themselves. Any buildings you can afford are wonderful, but you will probably need diplomatic assistance. SELL ALLIANCES, MAPS, TRADE AGREEMENTS, ETC. GET TOP DOLLAR OR DO NOT BOTHER.

Otherwise, I agree with your assessment, Grog. Another gold star.

Also true, but in the intense local blitz, especially in the middle of Europe, and especially as any Catholic looking to avoid excommunication or to take Rome in a single turn, ballista are necessary. So, mostly agreed. One silver star.

What I plan to do is divide the campaign into different pages so that you don't need to load all 600 photos at once. Maybe 200 a page.

Do you know that at the com there was a discussion about you. Most of them didn't believe that it was possible to complete the Grand campaign within nine turns let alone to conquer the known world in 28 turns. The best thing is that the thread was started by someone who thought that completing the grand campaign within 100 turns was an accomplishment. :laugh4:

Now that is pretty neat!

It should be noted that although I have completed the 9 turn long campaign, SirRethCir beat me to it, and it is now my burden to finish the long campaign in 8 turns in order to reclaim the title. SirRethCir deserves the recognition in accomplishing this feat, not me.

Hey, if someone beat entire map in 70 turns on Lands to Conquer, that would be a sight to see. Although in vanilla it's not that much of a challenge, it's still a good starting point for Blitzmasters in training.

Ive not read any opf the above posts, but why is it that non of your armys disbanned on the crusades? On my crusades if i dont go straight to the target they all disband. Your going in the total oposit directions and they arnt disbanding?

Wow, very impressed! I 'm so stuck in the turtle mentality I can't even comprend the blitz tactics. Obviously far superior to the slow turtle approach I take. Using your approach I did try to use crusader stack but it wouldn't allow me to attack any catholic factions until they were excommunicated. I also lost the majority of the force to disbanding.

Dam thats alot of loading time for the pics... and Im on broadband at work...I feel for those with 56k hehehe... I do have 1 question tho ATPG .. I noticed that from turn 27 to turn 28 your florins increased by nearly 50k but ur income was under 10k profit.... is that due solely to looting cities/rewards for crusades? If so perhaps Ive been attacking the wrong areas of the map... omw to those turks first nexxtime I suppose...

Exactly. Sacking cities, especially large ones, will net you 10,000-20,000. Also, losing a LOT of troops in battle conquering your enemies can result in huge differences in your annual budget. I also love to pillage and destroy things, which also nets you cash.

You can prevent all loss to desertion by leaving the crusade and then joining the crusade again in the same turn, but it only works for the first 10 turns, because then you cannot rejoin.

Using your approach I did try to use crusader stack but it wouldn't allow me to attack any catholic factions until they were excommunicated. I also lost the majority of the force to disbanding.

You can use two tactics to attack the Catholics who arent excommed:

1. take a rebel or noncatholic settlement and then move your general (still on crusade) out of the city. The entire army still inside the city will become a "garrison" next turn, and officially leave the crusade. Your general can continue on by himself, or leave the crusade too and lead the stack. But it's a great way to earn new generals... have captian led stacks attack your foes.

2. Have your crusader general leave the crusade, while all your troops are still on the crusade. Now move next to a city as if you were to beseige it. Now leave the crusade, click on your stack, select ONLY YOUR NON CRUSADER GENERAL and beseige the city with him. It will work, and you will have the entire crusader stack "backing him up"

Next turn, take the city (warnings will appear that the troops will disband this turn...)

Now, rejoin the crusade and move where ever you want. Rinse and repeat.

This is so cheap, I didn't even do it for this campaign. But YOU can.
