Canada unsafe for travel?

I figured this was more front than backroom material, given how silly it is.. Apparently the Australian Government put up a warning (several years ago) about traveling to Canada on their "Smart Traveller" website. It's ranked in the second safest category, but on a slow news day just a few weeks back that was deemed dangerous enough for an article titled "Australia issues travel warning against Canada; says not as safe as SKorea " to be written. :clown:

Countries surprisingly safer than Canada? China, Chile, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Belarus, Romania, South Korea, and Latvia.

I think they got stuck with that because of some Bin Laden tape that vaguely threatened Canada along with the U.S. and most of Western Europe.

Didn't Canada send troops to Afghanistan? I seem to recall a Canadian soldier there holding the record for the longest shot made under combat conditions

What's really cool are the forest fires during heavy snows.

Some jerk takes the spark arrestor off the muffler of his chainsaw and then starts cutting pine that have been in a drought all summer. The things are tinder dry, the snow doesn't help at all since it's frozen and can't be absorbed. The saw shoots sparks on the branches, the needles catch fire like they're soaked in gas, and the whole tree lights goes up like a torch. The snow barely stops it because the wind fans the flames. And it always spreads if the forest is dense.

This is a pic of one of the smaller winter forest fires. If you look closely, you`ll even see the handsome doofus-goofus in the shot warming a slice of moose pizza over the fire. This blaze burnt for hours and took out hundreds of square feet of prime Quebec timberland. It was a disaster of mediocre propotions.

We Canadians are nothing if not environmental oppotunists. :canada:

Assuming the stuff I learned in college a couple years ago is still current, they have a rather higher rape rate as well. I was also told that England's violent crime rate is higher than the U.S.'s, but again fewer murders.

I guess when American criminals decide to be violent, they go all out. :smg:

The statistical differences between the US and Canada serve mostly (IMHO) to demonstrate the limited utility of comparing nations on those grounds. Studies that control for the essential demographic differences between the coutries (Specifically Canada's population is still largely located in rural areas, while the US's is increasingly urban) tend to even out the differential quite a lot, as you might expect. It's interesting the bits of info you pick up frequenting pro/con gun boards. :laugh4:

Anyway, it's pretty funny that these days if you want to find the 'Main Street USA' the History Channel seems to pine for you'll have much more luck in Canada.

We have a Main Street like that in the semi rural town I live in. If the History Channel comes to film it they better leave the camera unfocused, so as to hide that the quaint little shops are falling apart. And then there are all the homeless people, and the fact the economy is based largely on meth production and social program payments from the surprisingly large number of people with "bad backs". If only it really were idyllic. :clown:

Actually that's part of what I was trying to convey; Canadian cities, in general, are safer and much less densely populated than US cities. Most of the violent crime in Canadia is rural crime, the kind of Jim Bob and Billy Joe havin' a disagreement down at the Watering Hole deal.

I grew up in the deep South, not even in the one traffic light town that was nearby, named, as funny as it may sound, Homer. Main Street holds no charm for me. My family still mostly lives there, a counsin raises pigs, my father cows, an uncle mostly weeds (Yay farm subsidies!), all within a few miles of each other. I can't ding it too much, but I wouldn't go back either.

Anyway, the point was, Canada's small ball governments are well funded enough, and their population homogenous enough, to allow for some of that old fashioned Main Street madness. More power to 'em, but this too shall pass. :yes:

Pfft, the Travel warning is a marketing ploy to 'sex up' Canada. Make it look cool and dangerous. The warning has been there for several years and the amount of Australian tourists have been climbing. Over 200,000 last year or 1% of the population of Australia fly almost half way around the globe to visit Canada.
