 stw_Mongol Invasion of Japan.zip
written by William Kirsch
Introduction
In World War II, as the U.S. forces moved ever closer to Japan and plans were made to invade the main islands of Japan, the Japanese attempted a desperate new strategy. Volunteers flew planes loaded with explosives into enemy ships. These suicide flights were called "kamikaze" by the Japanese, which means "divine wind". The word "kamikaze" is a powerful one for the Japanese. It recalls a famous time in their history when another potential invader was destroyed by fierce hurricanes. These "divine winds" were thought to be sent by the gods to protect Japan, and they gave the Japanese a feeling of security and invincibility that lasted until their defeat in World War II.
That earlier invader was the Mongols. These fierce nomadic people from Mongolia swept across the civilized world during the 13th century. They shattered opposing armies in precision cavalry attacks and burned cities as far away as Poland and Egypt. Then they set their sights on Japan.
In my earlier readings of history the account of the Mongol invasion of Japan was brief. It usually read something like this: The Mongols asked the Japanese to submit peacefully. The Japanese refused. The Mongols then assembled a mighty armada and tried to take Japan by force, but before they succeeded a hurricane swooped down and wiped out the fleet, saving the Japanese from the cruel domination of the Mongols. The end.
This leaves a lot of questions in my mind though. The Japanese themselves are known as a fierce, warlike people. The 13th century for Japan was a time of shoguns and samurai. 5 Surely it would have been a difficult country to subdue. On the other hand we are talking about the Mongols. We're talking about an army that shattered the heart of the Islamic empire. We're talking about a group that beat the Russian army during the winter, and decimated the Teutonic Knights in Poland.4
So my big question is this,
If that hurricane hadn't occurred, would the Mongols have won, or would they have died anyway under the swords of the samurai?
In this paper I have gathered many facts and come up with a possible answer.

Hints for Shogun: Total War.
Teaser:
Managing Your Territories and Armies
Territorial management depends on how you want to run the game. If you are
looking to become a big military power and crush your enemies with sheer numbers,
you will build more men and dojos. If you are looking to get ahead in technology
and hit them with fewer, more powerful units, you will climb the technology tree
and have fewer but more powerful men. Everything that you do and all you can
build rotates around the level of your castle. The amount of money you bring in
comes from things like your farms, ports and mines. The koku is the currency in
Shogun and it needs to be well managed or you will be broke by the end of a year.
This section will help you to understand how the building tree works, how the
economy works and how to use the two together. Natural disasters are a part of
this game and when they happen they can be a great setback. There's nothing worse
than building that legendary sword smith to have an earthquake take it down along
with 2 of your famous dojos. When a natural disaster hits a territory, the koku
output for that year is halved and the loyalty of your people goes down, so be
prepared with some Shinobi if at all possible. There isn't anything you can do
about the money, but the Shinobi will keep order and help prevent the revolt.
Money Management
What would you like to do? Do you want to be a power monger and spend all your
money on military might or do you want to play the diplomat and go up the
technological tree? If you choose military power, build your armies and build
them fast. Don't worry about castle and building upgrades; you are going for
sheer numbers here. If you want to go up the technological tree, build a good
garrison in your territories and put your money into upping your structures.
Watch your koku output. You are not guaranteed a set amount of money every year.
One year could yield a plus fifty percent while the next could cut your income in
half with a drought.

How to make maps for Shogun Totalwar by Toda TosaInu
Introduction & materials.
Read the entire readme quickly before doing anything!
Backup any file you're going to edit and the important readme files you'll install together with the demo!
I'm Dutch, so forgive my weak English please. This write up is intended to be used with the stw alpha demo editor, aka the battle trainer. This battle trainer is 100 mb in size. Download STW alpha demo
You might also need a graphic editor capable of using tga files: paintshop pro, photoshop. If you don't have a graphics app, then you might download at the same site TAG's TGA viewer (you can at least open screenshots).
Install the battletrainer to a different folder than the full stw game!
Browse the new made shogundemo folder first. It's a demo, so some things work slightly different than in the full game. There are for example different exe's for voodoo/tnt based cards. Read the readme carefully!
If you want to make scenarios for either the demo or the full game (historical battles) then you'll need Thorgrim's shogcrack (for dl at my site). Beware: installing the shogcrack overwrites the original readme (back this up!). Install the shogcrack to the shogundemo folder and run it. It might not work , try again. If it still doesn't work: bad luck, but you can still make maps! Don't get frightened by the word crack, it won't harm.
Note: without shogcrack you might not be able to rename maps and change bdf files. You need to back-up the jjm files and stick to tutmap3 name. The final name can be given using Windows Rename command (right mouse click).
You should also download Robs mapconverter. This nice program converts maps from the full game to maps that can be used as starting material in the demo editor. Version 2 is easiest to use.

 Shogun_FAQ.zip
Unofficial Shogun: Total War Gameplay Hints and FAQ Guide, Version 4.0
This is a compilation of many posts on the totalwar.org website. Many individuals contributed to this FAQ but I didn’t show names as I felt this might be too personal in a FAQ. But, they do deserve all the credit. All I did was compile it and do a very minimal amount of editing. I tried to get the most obvious spelling, and grammar problems, but I know I missed some. In the body of the FAQ where it says “I”, this isn’t me (JeffM), it’s the person who wrote the paragraph. I have attempted to eliminate most “the game should have …” or “the game does this stupid thing …” type comments. I don’t think these fit in a useful FAQ.
I do think I need to credit GrumpyOMO and Darkmoor Dragon for the expert level hints. I think these will be so helpful to all players at any level, and will help many folks have a much greater game experience, that the credit is richly deserved.
Use this FAQ at your own risk. I make no statement of completeness, accuracy or usefulness by providing this. Also, you are welcome to opinions different that what is reflected here. To the best of my knowledge there is no copyrighted information in this FAQ.
