This battle is for the Mongol Invasion expansion or the Shogun Warlord Edition. It does not work for the original Shogun: Total War.
Konnichiwa,
I've played with the MHC last week, playing is not the right word here, it was more bloody
brainless rushing. In 5000 koku battles I used 1 KoreanSpear H4 armor 1 (he stayed way
back from any danger) and 11 honor 0 Mongol Heavy Cavalry at 408 koku each (0 koku left). The MHC
are a very strong and fast unit, 11 of them can cover the whole width of a field and will slay about
anything. I'm not a skilled taisho, but you might find the following hints useful.
A cure against a MHC rush is a high honor yarisam army: 5000 koku can buy 6 honor 4, 8 honor 3
and 2 honor 2 ysam leaving some 10 koku. One can fairly easily beat a MHC army, but such an army
is quite slow and not flexible. Speed is something the mongols have, 16 ysams against some MLC,
skirmishers, spears/grdsmen, and some MHC won't make that much change as the MLC will use hit and run
tactics at the edges, the MHC will finish the routers in no time. When the cav has crippled your army
the infantry will come in and you'll be finished.
I've made some historical battles, to allow you to train against MHC rushes. One could also use
the custom battle for this, but the historical battle allow you to fight against or with units consisting
of 45 MHC instead of 60.
The AI isn't very clever, so you might train the MHC counter online too. I think that Magyar Khan will
be a bit thougher MHC rusher (he can do much more than rushing).
Historical battles don't allow any other upgrades but honor. Both armies could spend 5000 koku.
Mongols:
1 H3 KoreanSpear Taisho
1 H2 KoreanSpear
11 H0 MHC
4968 koku total
Japanese
1 H3 Naginata Cav Taisho
6 H3 Yarisam
4 H0 Lsam
2 H2 No-dachi
1 H1 No-dachi
2 H3 Yari Cav
4980 koku total
PS. in a 5000 koku MHC rush are the 11 h0 MHC important, the taisho is only the rallypoint.
This Japanese army is good if you expect a MHC rush but also wants to be prepared for other threats.
6 H3 Yarisam are not required to beat the MHC rush, you could go for 5 Ysam and 5 lsam, thus being better
armed against a balanced mongol army.
Mongol cavalry is very fast, keep units together or you'll get hurt. One danger here, the bombers:
they have a weak range and are a minorty, finish them asap with your lsam or nods before they create
havoc.
Put ysam on hold formation and hold position, don't attack MHC with ysam but endure the attack, you'll
get nice defence bonusses. Idle ysam can and must of course be used to flank MHC, but beware: by moving
ysam you'll create openings for other MHC to passs and attack your lsam, nods and back.
Put lsam on hold formation and position too, this is always a nice option to consider, but in the case
of Mongol cav, skirmishing is futile. Place them on hold and keep firing. In case of a MHC rush
you would put them behind the Ysam wall. In case of a MLC army you might want to use extra range and place
them in front of the ysam. Advance the Ysams when the enemy charges, thus the protecting lsam.
Use the YCav to backstab and flank engaged MHC.
Don't forget about the taisho nagcav, but don't expose him to great dangers.
MHC has an increadible morale, even at H0. Don't think that you won once some run away, and don't
chase them with the YC. Instead of that use the YC to close engaged MHC in and destroy them
till the last man. Regroup the ysam wall and prepare for the next attack or advance a bit.
ALWAYS KEEP THE UNITS TOGETHER.
There are 4 folders: copy all 4 into shogun/battle/batinit/historical battles, copy the Green.jjm and
Green.TGA to shogun/battle/maps. The 4 battles can be selected from the game menu, historical battles.
