SHOGUN Battlefield Calculator readme:
July 2000,
v0.5
This program may be used to study the battlefield effectiveness of
different units in Shogun: Total War (only hand-to-hand combat is considered).
How combat takes place:
Unlike in other RTS games the units in Shogun do not accumulate damage. During each
gamecycle every unit performs a single attack and may be attacked by any
number of enemy units. A chance to kill is associated to each attack and if
the attack is successful the attacked unit dies. For example a chance to
kill of 10% means that the unit on average kills one enemy unit per 10
gamecyles. The calculator shows these chances for both units on a left side
as colored gauge-bars.
The number of units multiplied with the chance to kill was named damage per
cycle and is shown on the right side as similarly colored bars. This damage
is expressed as the percentage relative to the total damage in one cycle.
The sum should add up to 100% (within rounding errors). When the damage is
at 50% the sides are balanced.
The information needed to balance out the sides is presented at the bottom
of the form. One may request the number of units or their level that would
result in equal damages.
The buttons in the speedbar load and display the "rich text" files (
these can be created with Wordpad or Word) containing some useful stuff.
Some files are incomplete, but I'd be glad to include a completed version
in the distribution. Let me know.
The calculations are based on the principles presented in the Prima strategy
guide although their numerical values are totally wrong. The fine-tuning
has been performed by controlled experiments (pitting known units against
each other) and via speculation. Funny thing that it still works pretty
well, I need more data though. Previously a couple of people asked me
to show exactly what I do thus this time the C code containing the
calculation is included in the distribution.
