Gameroom Chess Tourney?
Idea would be to get 32 or 64 and then do a tourney. Each pair does a best of three and winner advances. Play by PM, EM, or chat with both players reporting results. Semi's and Finals played in the thread with others allowed to comment -- but not coach.

Tournament Pairings.
Unable to establish single elimination bracketing without a ridiculous number of byes. Therefore, we will proceed in pseudo World Cup format. All assignments were made using random number sequences generated by random.org.
4 Groups will be established and players will play two games against each member of their group. Players will decide the format of their match (web, pbem, pbchat, ftf) between themselves. Both players will report the results of their games to the thread. Players earn 2 points for a win, and 1 point for a draw. The highest two point scorers from each group will then play a "1st to achieve 2 wins" to determine the group winner. The high score takes white in the first game, then players alternate until a conclusion is reached.
The Group A winner will face the Group C winner in a semi-final "1st to achieve 2 wins" match. Initial color determined by coin flip or other mutually acceptable manner. Again both players report results.
The Group B winner will face the Group D winner in a semi-final "1st to achieve 2 wins" match. Rest as for A v C.
The Final will be a "1st to achieve 2 wins" match between the winners of the semi-final round. Finals games will be played in the thread with players submitting moves alternately. The losers of the semi-final rounds can play a "Bronze" match or just skip it and head to the pub at their discretion.
Group Play:
You will have one week to conclude your 2 games with your 1st group opponent (one as each color). Subsequent pairings must complete in 4 days (we'll have our systems down by then and can speed up).
Within each group, the order of play will be as follows:
1st pairing: N1 v N4, N2 v N5, N3 v N6.
2nd pairing: N1 v N5, N2 v N6, N3 v N4.
3rd pairing: N1 v N6, N2 v N3, N4 v N5.
4th pairing: N1 v N2, N3 v N5, N4 v N6.
5th pairing: N1 v N3, N2 v N4, N5 v N6.
Group A: Results

A2 = Andres 0-1-0
A3 = w&f 1-1-0 0-2-0

Sure. I'll probably lose quickly too, but why not?

I'll join so no one would feel bad about themselves.

I'll join so Quintus doesn't feel bad about himself

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
Are you planning on posting this anywhere else Seamus? I'm sure there are a bunch of people who play chess that don't visit the Gameroom.

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
Do you have to be very good? I've not played for ages but I know the rules and I played a bit in the past, I'd be interested in joining.

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
This is about a boardgame, right? You might want to work things out with the Arena staff, because that is also the place for boardgame discussion.
The Entrance Hall also probably isn't a bad place - it might give some newer members a way to feel as if they are more of the community.

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
How will be doing this? We should use the Arcade for this, you know, use the Tournament system. Its buggy I know.
EDit.Wont work. It could for other games.

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
We could play off-site; I used to frequent www.instantchess.com a few years ago. Just pick a nickname that's not taken and go in. I think if we set up a time we could challenge each other.

I second this question. I love chess, but I've only done so *very* sparsely in the last few years -- and even when I was playing regularly, I was still never more than an average player. :sweatdrop:
That being said, I'm definitely interested.

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
Hello everyone. There's a Hurricane heading this way, as a lot of you probably already know, and depending on how much damage is sustained here I could be without internet access from a week or two to up to or beyond a month. When the last one hit around here in 05 or 06 (Rita) I believe power to this area wasn't fully restored until almost a month later. If that is the case and you guys decide to start before I return then leave me out or whatever you decide is fine Seamus.
Thanks,
Ichigo

I will most definitely have to defend my honour here!
Hopefully it'll work out with time zones and such.

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
I'd probably be interested, but I won't be too good at it.....Yeah the hard part would be to find a suitable online chess thing that would allow for this. Also, would we be playing with the timer?

We could always just do the old style PBM to if everything falls through.

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
Definitely in, I use www.gameknot.com for my current games, IIRC you have to play at least 5 games before you could setup a tournament so maybe a different site will be better to set up the comp.
usually with correspondence chess you can set the limit for x amount of days, with gameknot each player plays 2 games against everyone else (1 white 1 black obvs) and the scores are totalled so it's more like a league than a cup style game.
If you wanted to use gameknot then I don't mind playing all comers and resigning after 4 moves or so to give people the 5 game minimum.

The problem with that is that it would take ages to finish the tournament. Think about it: I would say 3 or 4 days is probably the fastest you can finish a reasonably long game so it would take over a week for 3 games to be played out and if 32 players played, it would take probably at least 2 months at a conservative estimate

Re: Gameroom Chess Tourney?
I would be more than happy to show you all how rusty I have gotten.
