Remembering Childhood

Okay, so me and some friends at work today were discussing some of our favorite things as children of the 90's, and primarily went over TV, movies, and books. General consensus, of course, is that what we grew up with was far beter than most of the garbage that's on now, sans the movies of course, 'cuz we were nincompoops who didn't know what most movies meant in many cases.

So, given the "average" orgah is roughly within a standard deviation of 8 or so years, here's the question: Growing up as a kid(that is, 12 and under), what were your first favorite TV shows, book/book series, and movies?

Personally:

TV shows- Rocko's Modern Life, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Loony Tunes(Bugs is always gonna be the champ), and Animaniacs(god I wish we had shows like them still around).

Movies- Wasn't much of a movies kid, but Lion King will always be King.

Books- Goosebumps and Animorphs(Introduced me to what war would actually sorta be like, kinda, if it was really fantasy-like).

Ahhhh.... goood days the 90's were. There was a war that lasted a day... I vaaaaguely remember hearing about one going on :laugh4:. Summer camps,


TV-Animaniacs, GI Joe, Rico's Roughnecks (I feel like the only that watched this lol), Road Runner, Loony Toons, Pinky and the Brain, etc... good times TV was back then.

Movies- Aladdin, The Sandlot, Home Alone, Hook, Gettysburg,

Books-Goosebumps, child-friendly books that made all those epic books like War and Peace, Dracula, and Robin Hood really easy reads at such a young age (elementary :laugh4:). And five pages of Harry Potter :yes:

Other than that, GI Joe figurines, playing outside alll the time. Tan and Green soldiers. Street wide and neighborhood-wide supersoaker fights. Great times! :2thumbsup: :yes: :medievalcheers: :eyebrows:

TV - With obvious things already mentioned (Helloooooo, nurse!), BBC children's programming circa 1994 - 1999. I just think about it and feel all nostalgic. The Really Wild Show, Blue Peter...it was all so good.

Movies - Jurassic Park. Watched it when it came out on video at the age of 3. I'd always hide behind the sofa when the T-Rex made its first appearance. Also, comedy films from the 70's and 80's with people like Richard Pryor in seemed to make up a good chunk of my movie-diet.

Books - i read all sorts. Mostly encyclopedias though. Especially those Dorling-Kindersley books. When other kids got taken to the library, they'd get some sort of picture book. I'd always be racing towards the encyclopedia section and looking at the DK books. Trust me, if you want your kids to be smart and interested in learning, by all means take them to the library, but avoid the kids section. Show them DK books. Full of interesting pictures and bound to spark an interest in the sciences.

That's what i'm on about. I've only ever owned a two of their books though, a big brick containing lots of info on different things and another all about dinosaurs. They're all i have to take me back to my childhood ;_;

The 90's... that great place and time now lost forever

I did like alot of kids tv back in mid to late 90's but BP and The RWS were really boring to me...

TV Rugrats, Keenan and Kel, Neighbors, Home and Away, Are you afraid of the dark, Power rangers, Wrestling, football, and for some god awful reason ricki lake.... was it the hurricanes that football team on a boat ? (they where amazing!!)

Movies Can't remember too many.... Karate Kid, Blank Cheque and my girl are the first ones to jump into my mind... bond film as well.... may have been golden eye.... some mr bean film as well... don't know the name...

Books I enjoyed Goosebumps as well as the horrible history series of books, main things i remember reading... Guiness Book of Records!

Star Trek (TOS) the first time around in 1969 was fab.

Thunderbirds.

The Avengers; If I was good I could stay up until 9:00 on a Friday night to watch that. I was in love with Emma Peel. :embarassed:

Four feather Falls/Super Car/Joe 90.

That's about it. There wasn't a lot of telly on in the 60s. It didn't start until 3:30 in the afternoon and went off again at midnight.

We played out a lot. :yes:

Oh I nearly forgot.

Dr. Who with the original Doctor, William Hartnell.

Ah nostalgia!

TV - DBZ, Towser, football, Mr Bean.

Movies - Lots of James Bond, old Disney.

Books - Redwall series, Roald Dahl, Horrible Historys.

Gah, I forgot a big one.

THUNDERCATS!

And Jurassic Park, of course, can't believe that one slipped my mind.

TV - most things on CBBC, CITV. Chuckelvision was one of my favourites. Going right back, I remember that programme with that woman with the plane and the dog. Also the mouse called El Nombre, we watched that at school...

Books - lol

Other - POKEMON!!!

Favorite things of the 90's... hmm...

TV: Animaniacs, Spongebob Squarepants, Pokemon, Courage the Cowardly Dog

Movies: The Mask, Jurrasic Park, Home Alone, Back to the Future I-III

Books: none that I remember of...

TV: Thundercats, Captain Planet, Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtes, Danger Mouse, He-Man, Fraggle Rock, The Animals of Farthing Wood, and The Dreamstone.

Movies: Disney Films; particularly Robin Hood & Fantasia, The Dark Crystal*, and an old cartoon version of "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe".

Books: Goosebumps, Redwall, Discworld, Horrible Histories.


* An EPIC that surprisingly few people have seen.

During my tadpole years there was no cable tv and cartoons were only on Saturday & Sunday mornings. We got maybe 4-5 stations...
TV: Looney toons, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Woody WoodPecker, Popeye, Tom & Jerry, Dudley Do-Right,Fractured Fairy Tales, Batman, Star Trek *original*, Twilight Zone, Godzilla, Circle of Fear, 6 Million Dollar Man, F-Troop, Green Acres, Flash Gordon, Davey Crockett, Lone Ranger

Movies: Any western with John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Planet of the Apes, The Blob, Wizard of Oz, Ben Hur, The Omega Man, M.A.S.H , Apocalypse Now, Old Yeller

Books: White Fang, Where the Red Fern Grows, any comic book I could lay my hands on...

The animals of Farthing Wood!
Good God! I loved that program, those evil blue foxes and the heroic Red foxes, that was so sweet.
Also, Tintin the animated series, I used to love that.

Two amazing TV shows!!!

For me 12 yearsold was 1993. I didn't see many movies until after I was 12, we were poor in those days.

TV (comtenporary): Transformers, Inspector Gadget, Astro-boy, Voltron, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, GI-Joe, The real Ghosbusters, Ghostbusters, Robotix, Robotech, TMNT, Doctor Who (7th Doctor), Batman: the animated series

TV (old but still on): Schooby-doo, Superfriends, Mighty Mouse, Doctor Who (2nd, 4th, 5th, and later 1st Doctors)

Movies: Transformers, TMNT


Now I have a younger brother and sister. So I've watched nearly every episode of the original He-Man/She-ra, My little pony, Blackstar, Bravestar, Jem, and others.

Why nobody there has reviewed Jem is beyond me. It's one of my favorite shows, being an 80's kid.

I fell asleep watching Lethal Weapon2, and when I woke up some Aussie dude was talking in Gladiator.

But, I've been paying attention since then, I promise. :)

Oh and on topic, my kids were grew up through the 90s so I got a small dose of the 90's child entertainment world. I think Goosebumps was my favourite kids TV show.

TV: Transformers, Voltron, He-Man, Thundercats, Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dukes of Hazzard, The A-Team, reruns of the original Star Trek, Star Trek TNG, and Cheers.

Movies: Transformers, The Neverending Story, Flight of the Navigator, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, and Star Trek. (I watched the latter series' films with my dad -- we're both pretty big Trek junkies. ~D )

Books: Dr. Seuss when I was younger. Later on, I started reading Judy Blume's stuff.

TV: Public TV--Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, The Electric Company, and Sesame Street. Cartoons--Speed Racer, The Banana Splits, Scoobie Doo, Wacky Races (Saturday mornings). Star Trek, The Time Machine, Lost in Space, The Munsters, Ultraman.

Movies: Charlotte's Web, The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof, Chitty Chitty Bang, Bang, The Sound of Music. So many Disney movies I can't remember most of them--Old Yeller, The Incredible Journey, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ... I vaguely remember one about a boy and a falcon living alone in the wilderness which really moved me ... The Other Side of the Mountain?

Books: Harold and the Purple Crayon, Where the Wild Things Are, the Taran Wanderer series (Chronicles of Prydain, Gurgie! Cauldron-born!), The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

When I was 12 and under: we got a TV when I was 8. "Popeye The Sailor" was popular after school. 3 channels broadcast about 14 hours per day. Mostly Westerns & Crime-dramas. I guess Wanted: Dead or Alive was my favorite, with a squeeky-young Steve McQueen.

Movies were more of the same: Westerns and Crime-Dramas, with a few War movies and comedies thrown in once in awhile. The Absent-Minded Professor sticks out for me.

Books: I liked biographies (or "life-stories" as I called them then). Jim Thorpe, some guy who competed in the Tour de France, Babe Ruth, that kinda thing. Plus Mom monthly got Reader's Digest Condensed Books, which I'd read cover-to-cover. Though crude, it was my intro to bigger/better books; "To Kill a Mockingbird" was one I distinctly remember reading in RDCB first, then running to the library to get the real thing.

The family waited until I moved out at 18 to get a color TV. Man, that was a whole new world.

Reading this thread makes me miss Calvin & Hobbes. :sadg:

Movies: Never watched too many of them. The Lion King gets special mention because it was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. The re-release of Star Wars in 1997-98, even though I now know that Han shot first. Hercules and George of the Jungle.

TV shows: How in God's name has Legends of the Hidden Temple not been mentioned yet! Silver Snakes FTW!!! Also, Power Rangers, Looney Tunes, and the original set of What A Cartoon and Cartoon Cartoon series (Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, etc)... nothing after the turn of the century.

Books: As Kek mentioned, Calvin & Hobbes. :yes:

Doh! How'd I forget? Purple Barracudas FTW!!! :smartass:

TV- Johnny Quest, Loony Tunes, Rugrats, Baseball (I loved baseball and followed Baltimore when I lived in Northern Virginia)

Books- Animorphs and Goosebumps (I use to trade my snack for Goosebumps books in elementary school)

Movies- Predator, Bond... Probably some more that have been forgotten.

Books: I didn't read a lot of books when I was young. I did read the adventures of young Indiana Jones.

Movies: Most Disney animations like Bambi, Dumbo, the little mermaid, ...
