i downloaded a mod to unlock all the factions, and i know i cant use emergent factions or i will get a CTD. so i was just wondering which factions are emergent so i can make sure i avoid them.

it says non playable or emergent in the description
The ones not marked "playable" in main.pack's factions table.
As smellycat said, it says in the faction description in-game whether the faction is playable, non-playable (which is, with this mod, playable), protectorate (New Spain, Louisiana, 13 Colonies; it will crash a few turns after the start unless you get that mod to play as these ones, too), or emergent (unplayable unless you mod the game so that they start with a region or something).

If you want a mod that only allows you to play as the factions that will work, navigate through my sig to VEM, and only follow the instructions for startpos.esf
Only working factions have been unlocked.
as for protectorates, from that link, no, but there is one somewhere...keep searching at TWC for that.
Or give me a day or 7 and I can mod what you want in, if you PM me with the specifics.
This is to be able to play as the protectorates. What you want is to pick the one that keeps them as protectorates for the rest of the game.
From my experience as New Spain, though, I think the diplomacy is a bit odd for them. I often find the option to establish an alliance with other factions non-existant, as if I were still a protectorate, even though I declared war on (thus, freedom from) Spain... :inquisitive:
