A-hole at the wheel

So today while doing my commute to college, I encountered something weird. Some guy with a motorcycle was keeping a lot of space between the car in the front and the other one. But a bumhole was driving behind him, and kept tailgating him, at first his brakes screeched because for some reason this guy was going at lightspeed in heavy traffic.

He kept tailgating him even though traffic was moving a car a minute. At which point, the guy on the motorcycle stopped and yelled "what's your problem bro". The guy then started honking like crazy and they moved on.

You have to realize that this guy was stopping less than 5 inches from the motorcycle wheel. So it was really worrying that he would do something stupid and superman might have to get involved.

As the light turned green and I was driving away, the guy in the car yelled "you're going to die today" because the motorcyclist wasn't moving even though he couldn't move because traffic wasn't moving yet.

I really wanted to get out of the car and break his window with whatever.

It was kinda scary, but not as scary as finding out I lost 1.5/10 points on an exam because I had a stupid moment and made F=P/A and not F=AP.

Two drivers in the space of 3 months smashed into the back of me car, one got wrote off an the other had a lucky basically I aint surprised at all at all.

People just don't leave enough room when conditions are bad, AND they have no patience to wait for a safe place to overtake on a small rural roads.

A bigger A-hole.

The act itself was pretty bad, especially as so many died. Then you read his history of bannings, disregarding being banned etc. I think a lifetime ban has been earned.

Except this was a 3 lane road (pretty big in this country, highways are 2 lanes each side) for each side, and heavy traffic that was moving very slowly. So the guy was tailgating this motorcyclist for no reason.

Whenever someone drives in my bum, I always drop my speed to 3/4 of the limit.

This is especially fun on the E134 between my hometown and Drammen, as it has a fence in the middle of the road making drive-bys impossible. I doubt they learn anything, but it's amusing to watch them do 60 for 15 minutes when the limit is 80...

What if the guy engages reverse when you're stationary and hits you?

First time was on a good wide two lane with a large hard shoulder and twas straight as a ruler for about a kilometer.

Next time was in the village of Rathowen on the road to Dublin, some eejit thought slowing down in urban area is a notional rule of the road.

In Utah you can get a ticket for following too close. I got one when I fender-bendered a guy.

I refuse to allow people into my lane when they speed up the side of the line of cars and attempt to merge in the last 6 feet of road. Several states are giving people tickets for that type of behavior, they will park a cop at the end of the lane and bust people trying to do that. Personally, I think they should just be executed, as I am sure their selfish, reckless behavior is a larger reflection of their day to day activities.

Riding too close can actually make you lose your license here, as it's deemed "careless driving that may cause serious accident" or something along those lines. Like a very risky drive-by.

Rarely enforced though. But if you end up in a serious accident, and it was found that you did not keep distance, you are likely to wave your license goodbye.

All these things are essentia;lly obligatory to drive in Dubai. i think you get tested on them, along with switching lanes without indicating, flashing your headlights and switching the hazards on at every opportunity you get, which does at least indicate the guy is about to do something moronic.

There is a major problem here with different driving cultures interacting and misunderstanding each other - Indians, Europeans, and Arabs all have very different approaches to what is safe, plus in the case of the Emiratis there's a lot of big man syndrome going on, so many of them will never willingly give way, be overtaken, be forced to slow down. In fairness the police almost invariably blame the driver behind for driving too close if you rear end someone. Unless the person behind is Emirati, in which case it's clearly the fault of whoever they hit.

What the Hell is wrong with these people? Haven't they had basic road security getting their licenses?

It is well known that motorcycles have a lot shorter breaking distance than a car.
If the motorcycle was forced to emergency break, the car would have run him over... I consider such idiotic driving life threatening. It would be the same as if someone pointed a loaded gun at you.

I get extremely aggressive if someone rides close to my car if I have my kids or wife in it.
The only place that impressed me with their driving was Australia. Perfect distance between cars and never speeding. I wouldn't be the odd one out, so I complied to the city of Enochish way of upholding the law.

USA on the other hand was scary all three times I have engaged in driving there. In New York, I encountered people reading books while at the wheel on the highway. And not only one or two... it was prevalent.
Utah was tailgating capital, man... I got soo angry going on the highway there. Everybody was spacing <1 sec between cars doing 65..
I even got bumped the very first day there. Some chick wasn't paying attention when I was leaving a mall. I got really mad... She obviously was texting on her mobile while driving. She even had a rubber cushion around her front license plate. I am guessing that was there for a reason.

How about the 350 days of sun a year. or the tax free dollars. The easy travel to the rest of the ME, Asia and Europe, or the fact that overall it's actually a surprisingly balanced melting pot of cultures, where the locals largely tolerate the influx of a huge number of foreigners to work and further the development of the UAE. I guess that's all funny as well.

The advantage the Emiratis hold has very little to do with it being an Islamic society, as you'd discover from the Yemeni and Palestinian police men, Pakistani cabbies and Bangladeshi labourers. It has to do with rather arrogance, small minded protectionist tribalism and self-interest.

So you're right, it's not that diffrent to the West.

I wanted to be an ex-pat over there. Sadly, circumstances didn't allow it. I still hope I'll get a chance to live over there at some point in the future. I imagine it'll remain a hub for Management Consutancy.
