How about the 350 days of sun a year. or the tax free dollars. The easy travel to the rest of the ME, Asia and Europe, or the fact that overall it's actually a surprisingly balanced melting pot of cultures, where the locals largely tolerate the influx of a huge number of foreigners to work and further the development of the UAE. I guess that's all funny as well.
The advantage the Emiratis hold has very little to do with it being an Islamic society, as you'd discover from the Yemeni and Palestinian police men, Pakistani cabbies and Bangladeshi labourers. It has to do with rather arrogance, small minded protectionist tribalism and self-interest.
So you're right, it's not that diffrent to the West.
