Thesis: forgiveness is the worst cruelty of all.
It doesn't come from me it's in this English movie 'Looking for Eric'. But there is something to say for it, it's a form of a personal denouncement to be forgiven for what you actually did. You are left thinking about what you did, out of touch with it, it doesn't matter anymore, even if you are really sorry.
Re: Thesis: forgiveness is the worst cruelty of all.
So it's better when it does matter for the rest of your life and you know that they hate you and want you dead?
Re: Thesis: forgiveness is the worst cruelty of all.
Was thinking about something more subtle than wanting someone dead; hurting someones feelings and be forgiven for it. Feelings will still be hurt regardless. How can you make things up if you are dismissed of any accountability, you no longer exist.
Edit, has nothing to do with me by the way, it's a musing
Re: Thesis: forgiveness is the worst cruelty of all.
If you are dismissed and ignored, that doesn't sound like forgiveness, more like a lack of it.
Re: Thesis: forgiveness is the worst cruelty of all.
Hmm. During the Middle-ages, the worst punishment wasn't death, as you still belong to the community (and it helps if you believe in a futures after-life) but banishment. Being an outcast was worst than an outlaw, you were left alone to face dangers and life's uncertainties.
As forgiveness involvement, it depends on the level of morality or guilt is in the "bad" doing.

I, for one... Vote for the Pulp Fiction basement scene as more cruel than forgiving someone.

Sounds like he having trouble forgiving himself. There's nothing wrong with having regrets; if I for instance were to list all the things I wish I had not done, it would be a very long post. Life goes on though, and sometimes there's literally not a damn thing you can do about righting the wrong. In that situation all you can do is acknowledge that you were wrong, forgive yourself for it, promise yourself not to repeat the mistake, then move on. The ability to forgive yourself imho is absolutely crucial, as it also allows you to forgive others.

Clearly you haven't seen the tactics they had to resort to in Gitmo after they ruled out the sound-room and waterboarding. Forgiving the terrorists will make them be denied their glorious seventy virgins.
