I had this idea for a long time just interested in the topic.
As for me read :

This guy has a Frequently-Asked-Questions style of giving info on that topic. Quite an easy and informative read, with links to deeper sources.
If you're speaking about the Necronomicon from the Cthulhu Mythos, it was been invented by H.P. Lovecraft. This book, aswell as many other books that appear in a novel related to the Ancients and Great Ancients (De Vermis Mysteris, Cult of the Undead, the Unhausprigen Culten (sp?) were created by the writters.

If you read the articles and then think about them a little - one can come to two different conclusions.
That the Necronomicon is indeed a fiction made up by Lovecraft by using several different myths and fables to form a basis for some of his horror books.
Or that the Necronomicon was was written in Damascus in 730 A.D. by Abdul Alhazred. (Which is the source quoted in Lovecraft's Books).
Its a vicous little cycle that those who want to believe in the existance of such a book - can not fanthom or ackownledge.

Oh, I wasn't calling you a Satanist, IliaDN. My apologies if it seemed that way. I was just remarking on the dogmatism which attends belief in the accuracy of the book. I've met people who claimed with absolute certainty that Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts, which Lovecraft claimed had a copy of the book, actually existed in New England, even though it doesn't, nor does Arkham.
A telling fact is simply that the Necronomicon, as it exists in real book form, has no publish date earlier than the 1970's. That should tell you something. As a reading intensive child in the 1960's and a teenager in the 1970's, I can speak to the fact that Lovecraft's popularity became widespread during this time, with his stories and books appearing in many paperback editions, as well as those of others in his circle, such as August Derleth and Robert Bloch. The horror genre was just getting started and gaining mass appeal. Someone took advantage of that and published a book called the Necronomicon and the gullible soon snapped it up.
Well, i'm far from being an expert on the matter, but i believe there are 2 kinds of satanism: the true satanism as a religion and the "perverted" one. The difference is that the religion of satanism advocates there is a god, but this god is evil and wants the destruction of the world, whereas in all other religions (christian, muslim, budhist etc) the god is good and wants to save the world. I think Nitche (sp) was a satanist, in that, he believed god was evil, whereas, Goethe was an atheist (didn't believe in god).
Now, the more fascinating form of satanism, is the "perverted", where things go a bit ugly. It's what most ppl think when they hear the word. U know, killing chickens and all that voodoo stuff. I don't believe the second form has dedicated believers, just kids who want to show off by pretending they call the spirits of the dead.
Anyway, i think the religion of satanism is the 3rd largest in the state of California. If someone knows more and feels i've made any mistake, please correct me, as i said i don't really know that much.
