Should I stop giving you all citations?
A thousand posts! I'd like to celebrate it with this completely trivial little poll. :balloon2:
Some of you may have noticed that I've set this forum to 'French language'. Out of national pride, personal sensitivities and sheer stubbornness - a French thingy, you know the drill. :sweatdrop:
The only thing all of you ever notice of it are these citations I give:

So, should I just 'Quote' you all from now on? Or should I keep up the Asterix act and cling on to French 'citations'?

Give me back my citations!

New stuff discussed here: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=60698
I never minded seeing your french citations. It just reminded me you were French.
Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
Yes I can't read French so please speak English.
Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
I'll just vote in support of French. I love French. I wish I still spoke it, though... :embarassed:
Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
Leave it as French. Although I did vote Gahgne (just for the appreciation for that option :2thumbsup: ), there is nothing wrong with a little national pride.
Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
bonjour un deux troi montreal crepes. See I speak the french

Wow! Have you been reading Sartre? Your French is very reminiscent of his, in both deepness of thought and style. ~
Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
Allez, hein? Encore. Pas mal.
Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
Personally I don't have much respect for at least the modern version of French. That said I DO have respect for you as a member of the .org in good standing. My only suggestion (as I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to) is that if you want to make sure the majority of people understand what you're saying use the most widely understood language. Of course, many things are lost in the translation.

I make a point of only posting and linking in English. For practical purposes - if you write something, you want it to be read, so you might as well write it in a language everybody understands. And also out of courtesy - personally, I'm not amused either if two for example two Spanish guys halfway down a thread I'm participating in suddenly switch to Spanish.
No, what I'm refering to here is my habit of quoting people with a 'citation' et 'Posté par Vladimir' rather than 'quote - originally posted by Vlad'. For no other reason than to make a stubborn statement. Though now I'm not sure anymore how they show up if you've got this forum set to English. Maybe my citations get censored into quotes, dunno.
Oh, and please don't take this thread too seriously - it's just me drawing attention to myself to celebrate a thousand posts!

Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
I thought citations was another French word used in everyday (well academic) English...
Re: Should I stop giving you all citations?
Even though I (pretend to) despise French I'd love to learn certain things such as
Quote:
'Posté par Vladimir'
mainly because it will help in my historical reading. There are so many sources Henri Pirenne sites that I have to use my poor knowledge of Spanish to understand an even poorer translation of what the reference is. There’s so much good work by French historians.

Ok, so I just looked it up. And 'citation' is a perfect English word for 'quote' too. ~
There I was, thinking a citation in English only meant a 'summons to appear before court'. That explains a some of the confusion.
You learn something new every day. :2thumbsup:
