RTR: Under the Eagle

Welcome to the Official totalwar.org home of Rome Total Realism: Under the Eagle, a Imperial Rome mod spanning from 27BC to 326AD.

Current Team Members include Ryman2489 (Praetorian at RTR Forums), Marcus Camillus (Creator of the infamous 4tpy mod), and several other members of the Rome Total Realism Community.

We are currently in predevelopment phase, working on gathering information pertaining to the several major powers that existed and threatened the Empire during the time period.

Key Features we are Including:
-A map that no one has ever seen before, built by an outside party and adapted into the mod.
-Historically accurate Legions present at the start of Augustus's reign will be placed in the provinces where they were stationed. More legions will also spawn based on the time period they appeared in along with how far the Roman Empire has expanded in the game. For Example: A Legion that was historically used to fight in the campaign against Dacia will only appear if the Roman Empire shows evidence of moving into Dacia.

Faction Previews can be expected in the coming days, we hope to have our first one on the Kingdom of Dacia (name not final, could be divided into tribes).

By 4tpy, I presume you mean four turns a year? In which case, do you mean that Marcus Camillus adapted it for RTR use (though come to think of it, it wouldn't actually need much adaption for a mod without a background script)?

Because Myrddraal created the multiple turns script some time ago.

I should have been more clear. Marcus Camillus adapted the 4tpy mod to RTR, and then added a whole lot more to it.

Welcome to the first official preview of Rome Total Realism: Under the Eagle

Below, is the first public screenshots of the Italina Peninsula that will be used in the game. Settlement Locations, Settlement Names, and Port Locations are all final, unless a significant amount of evidence proves them wrong.

Explanations of the Cities, Regions, and Ports
Region 1: Latium
Latium contains the great city of Roma. The city choosen to represent the port of Latium is Ostia, which lies near the mouth of the Tiberis River.

Region 2: Campania
Campania contains the familiar city of Capua, which is positioned in the shadow of a nearby volcano. The port of Campania is positioned where the cities of Cumae, Misenum, and Puteoli would have been.

Region 3: Apulia
Apulia holds the city of Venusia which was historically positioned on the Via Appia. The port of Apulia is positioned where the city of Barium, modern day Bari, is located.

Region 4: Calabria
Calabria caontains the "heel" of the Italian "boot." The great port city of Tarentum claims the region as her own. The port in Calabria is where Brundisium was located. It is postioned opposite of Tarentum and was used as a massive trading port with Greece.

Region 5: Lucania
Lucania holds another familiar city, Paestum. The city can be found on the northwestern border of the region, positioned near the coast. The port located in Lucania is roughly based off of the cities of Buxentum and Blanda, at the southern edge of the region.

Region 6: Bruttium
The region of Bruttium claims the southern most tip of Italy. Vibo Valenti, the key city of the region, is found along the Via Popilia. The port is based off of the large city of Rhegium, very close to Sicily.

Region 7: Samnium
Named after the Samnites, enemies of Rome, this region holds the city of Alba Fucens, found nestled in the mountains along the Via Valeria. The port of the region is positioned in the area where the cities of Anxanum and Pallanum are found.

Region 8: Picenum
Picenum is a very small region at the eastern tip of the Peninsula. Auximum and Ancona were the supreme cities of the region. Auximum, found further inland, was chosen as the capital city of the region, while Ancona, found on the coast, was made the region's port.

Region 9: Umbria
Umbria follows the border of Picenum south, becoming very thin where the city of Hispellum is found, nestled in the mountains along the Via Flaminia, which connects the city to Pisaurum, choosen as the location of the region's port.

Region 10: Etruria
Etruria is the largest region in Italy. Arretium, found deep inland along the Via Cassia is its capital. The port of the region is based off of the wealthy port city of Pisae, modern day Pisa.

The Island of Sicily is divided into four different regions:
(East to West)
Sicilia Poeni (Lilybaeum)
Cameratum (Agrigentum)
Sicilia Romanus (Messana)
Sicilia Graecus (Syracuse)

The other two islands off the eastern coast of Italy are Sardinia and Corsica:

Corsica (Aleria)

That what I love about RTR and it varients, the maps, can't wait to see to previews and the units, but need to ask, how are you going to do the Roman faction icon, will it be the Imperial Eagle or the christianized symbol or both?:idea2:

Very good question. We are still in the process of finalizing and weeding our faction list. We have had some early icon work (nothing really worth showing) already done. The task of what exactly should be put on them will be started after the finalization of the faction list.

Our third map previews takes us into the densely wooded areas once occupied by fierce barbaric tribes. Join us on a journey through Iberia and Gallia.

We shall start off at the Iberian Peninsula, a massive land mass that was divided into only three regions, believe it or not! Our first ingame screenshot is of the Southern half.

Gallia is home to many provinces, the real question is, where to begin? Our first up close and personal look at Gallia will be at her southern shores, occupied by three cities, Narbo, Nemausus, and Massilia.

On the eastern shores, we find two cities in close proximity to eachother, seperated only by the banks of a river. These are the cities of Burdigala and Petrocorii.

Heading northwest, we end up at Julio Magus and Condate.

The city of Berosa (in southern Macedon, just north of Thessaly) is and was spelled correctly as Berroia or Beroia and sometimes even as Berrhoia, and is pronounced as Veria with a "v"... hope that helps...

Edit: Misread my map. It's quite old and has some inconviently placed creases in it. On the map it is read: Berroea.

Welcome to the Fifth Official Map Preview of Rome Total Realism: Under the Eagle

We're heading south, and it's getting warmer. Africa is in sight, so get ready for this map preview, because it's going to be a hot one.

Working from West to East, we make our first stop at the region of Mauretania Tingitana, named for the capital city of the region, Tingis.

Following the coastal road we end up in Mauretania Caesariensis. Much like its sister region to the west, Mauretania Caesariensis is named after the capital city of Caesaria.

Staying on the coastal road, we find ourselves crossing the border into Roman Numidia, whose borders are much different than those of the Kingdom of Numidia, defeated years earlier. The chief city of the region is Cirta.

A short ways to the east lands us in the first Roman province of Africa, hence the name of the province, Africa. This region was once ruled by the mighty city of Carthago. The city still stands strong, as depicted by the location of the region's port. Augustus named Utica the capital of the region.

Our final journey is a long one, as we following the coastal road once more across the great landmass of Africa, ending up in the region of Tripolitania, home to Lepcis Magna, once a great city of the Carthaginian Empire, still remains a dominate stronghold in Roman Africa.

Africa is a large landmass with few points of supply. Heading any further south of these regions would be suicide, as only desert and heat await you, in the unconquerable land labeled Terra Incognita.

We're going to a place called Asia Minor. However, as you will see in a few moments, this area isn't so "Minor."

We shall start off our preview at a familiar place, the strait the seperates Byzantium from Asia Minor. Sitting to the east of Byzantium is Nicomedia, and to the south, Cyzicus.

Note: That road that crosses over the strait is an annoying little bug that will be fixed by release.

Heading down the coast, we find the cities of Sardis and Alabanda, their regions seperated by a river.

Continuing east along the coast, we end up at Tarsus, sitting on the coast.

Our next shot continues east along the coast, but gives us a look at two inland cities, Apamea and Sagalassus. The coastal city you see is Patara.

Another Note: The Only region you did not see is Cyprus, which is the island to the south of Asia Minor. The reason is that Fraps did not record the screenshots, and I won't have access to the computer with the files on it to take a screenshot for about a week, so I felt that I would still release this preview, despite the missing region of Cyprus, home to Paphos, which lies on the West coast of the island.

Welcome to the Seventh Official Map Preview of Rome Total Realism: Under the Eagle

Today we are heading back towards Italy, looking over the Northern part of the Peninsula, and into the Great Alps. We are also heading east of the area and checking out the former lands of the Illyrians.

Reading from West to East, we will start off just Northwest of the main Italian Peninsula, at the very edges of the Province of Italia. In this first image, we can see the cities of Augusta Praetoria, Placentia, and Vada Sabatia on the Mediterranean.

Moving to the northeast, we see Curia and Augusta Vindelicorum, which are actually north of the mountain range.

We start off at the island of Crete, home to the capital city of Gortyna.

Heading to the northeast, we stop at the first of the Syrian regions, the northern most is Syria Prima, home to the city of Antiocha.

Moving south, two more regions come into view, Phoenicia Prima and Phoenicia Secunda, home to the cities of Tyrus and Damascus, respectively.

We now jump far to the southwest, just east of the Tripolitania region. This is the region of Cyrenaica, home to the city of Cyrene.

Noticed you had some things mixed up, eg Caledonii are a northern tribe of Britain, its Latin for Scotland. Also, Icenii from southern Britain. I drew a little map in Paint:

Ahhh, that's a typo in the faction list. Our faction placement map puts them in northern britain and scottland.

What's the deal with this mod, still in dev?
