I'm guessing I probably will know soon enough.
Is the next congressional session going to happen this turn or after the next?
How dare you quote wiki as a good resource, it hurts my eyes.. :D
I've just checked, even on wiki it says that the quaestor was lower than the aedile :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cursus_honorum
http://www.livius.org/ct-cz/cursus/cursus_honorum.html
The only way into the senate was quaestor, and in the later republic Tribune of the Plebs (if you were a plebeian, patricians still had to resort to the quaestorship
Aediles were certainly responsable for more than 1 building. If I recall correctly, the whole public works. Also they were responsable for a few important festivities.
Patricians -who were not able to make their name being a tribune of the plebs - usually spend a lot of money as aedile to make their name famous in order to be remembered 3 years later in the praetor elections. Usually they spend so much money on this, that they had to rape their praetorappointed province in order to pay back their debts.
Questors were usually accompanying generals to their companies, running the 'financial side' of things. In reality, they were (ab)used by the general to run errands, send messages down the command line and do all other small jobs the general nor his legates were prepared to do
Well, the rules are made, no point in changing them :D But still, it felt ackward seeing the aedile below a quaestor, as the latter is actually the junior position in ancient rome.
Though I do understand that aediles were only elected for the city of Rome, and since our avatars aren't usually in Rome and quaestors were more numerous and spending time with generals in provinces, for the purpose of this enterprise it is convenient to place the questor above the aedile, as this game is mostly military orientated.
Aediles didn't leave rome nor participated in any army activity.
BUT, stricktly speaking, quaestor IS the junoir position.
Anywayz, doesn't matter :D I just like to be right ;-)
Due to the fact that we have no personal currency, riches and the like for this sort of game, these sort of things can be overlooked. However, we did discuss the positions of Aedile and Quaestor a while back, and we came to the conclusion we have now.
I wasn't criticizing the game rules by any means :D
Not at all. I'm only explaining the situation :2thumbsup:
EDIT: Whoops, I never did finish my battle report, I'll do some more now....yay, done!
hey navarro, I assume you already read my PM to you about the event, but I haven't got a reply yet, so I'm still not sure whether I should carry on with the story I posted yesterday.
so, is the event accepted?
"Yes it is," said Navarro...:sweatdrop:
what? where? gah!
I'll just proceed on with the event.
cheers @ bean for moving me :)
do u recollect how many turns it would take me to reach you?
ok, I'm done with the event story and rules: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=2142450
if anybody wants to change anything, please post here; if navarro changes his mind, please pm me.
and I haven't got time to do everything IC-related for this event, so I'll add more in a few hours time)
oeee, warrrr !
Hey, nice minimod Everyone, I've only just noticed it
Blagged :2thumbsup:
Shrek 2? :2thumbsup: Woo a :balloon2: for me!
Bugger...can I have a clue
No
:-P
On a separate note, does the Consular legion require two Tribuni to accompany the Consul? If so, then technically Blasio should not be operating his Legio IV Roma, as it is not up to full strength.
Legions dont require tribunes, at least according to our rules; they take a maximum amount of tribunes.
Which is good, because Legio I hasn't had any either since... err... well, since Everyone's (or was it yours, bean? I always mix you two up) first character died and Legio I passed to me. That would've been two legions we could not use just because of that, and that doesn't really seem right to me.
No, Asina died, leaving you as Legate, and Cicero (Everyone's new character) joined Legio I
Well, yeah, and now that I think about it I had Ibn as well, but that was only for a very short while. Cicero immediately turned Heres and Ibn quit, so by the time I made my first movements with Legio I, there were no tribunes anyway.
Oh yeah..well, several people I've PMed have shown interest in joining. Just waiting to see if they actually sign up now
That's good, it's nice to have some fresh blood around here.
Thats if they do turn up. We do need more Tribunes though. Whats that thing called in Biology, about the biomass thing? We should have many tribunes, with slightly less Legates, then less Duxs, then few Praetors and so on. However we now seem to have a lack of lower orders. Get recruiting people!
"Kill them!"
(Frm Armstrong and Miller...dam you non-living-in-Britain-people)
yes i like the idea id like to work a bit more on it with you though.
Guys once again i want to apologize. Things were great with school and work. Then (right as i also become chancellor in wotb) things just go crazy. I have almost no time to do well, anything anymore so ill be as active as i can just try and give me a lil break. :sweatdrop:
Alright, but dont forget we have acongressional session by the time I wake up.
Actually scratch that, I might do an all nighter
yes indeed we do 22:00 Pacific is when i start it! Which means i need to go edit the rules and what not to prepare.
It's not "un-RP like" at all. There's been plenty of time for you to do it since they were ruled in and until I brought it up in the Curia, and if you've had time to take the save, post here and read the Curia, then you have had time to fix the rules. I mean, it's not like you have to do anything more than copy and paste, so it's completely fair game, and fully in line with my roleplaying.
If you don't want to take the heat, then you shouldn't turn on the radiator. ~;)
ya well exactly my point thats all i HAVE time to do is check this mess take the save and go. Ill do it today as i sort of have to and i don work til late.
Reading and writing in this thread hardly takes priority over fixing the rules, which only takes a couple of minutes anyway, so I don't buy that excuse. It's not like I'm going "OMGZ" over this, but when it does take this long even after a PM to remind you, you have nothing to complain about when I bring you the IC consequences for it.
true, its done now by the way, but you put it on Blasio like its his job. Some lowly scribe would of been the one to rewrite that lol not Blasio. Hes not just gonna roll over to some chamber and pull a Thomas Jefferson...hes a freakin senator they had slaves for that :laugh4:
Yeah, but since Blasio was a dictator when this took place, it was up to him to see it done. If it doesn't happen, the blame thus rests on Blasio because of that. If he doesn't care to see that the slave not only does what he's told, but does it properly as well, then Pvblivs can attack him for being careless too. :laugh4:
(Of course, the argument that "Blasio doesn't care what the Senate says" is much stronger, and he would probably have it much easier to believe that, thinking such a reason to be a lie. He does view Blasio as an unlawful tyrant anyway, even with these updated laws.)
haha well i suppose i see ur point. and i look forward to our political opposition. very fun for the curia!
Ok, you can go ahead and kill off my character. He is causing a lot of trouble in Taras anyway (what with the impostor and unhappy people traits).
However, I'm going to be gone for the weekend, so I'll pick a new one Sunday night.
okay i hope you keep to that. Id hate to lose a player!
hahaha too busy lately navarro? I am good to go, vacation has been great this week although i'm bummed tomorrow is friday, no more vacation next week.
hah busy is two small a word...life has been meddlesome haha.
edit: also im off to work right now, ill be home in time to start the CC!
ill be home in an hour getting off work now.
I think you should refrain from saying stuff like that (emphasis added). Actually, from what is said in the opening post in the Stories thread, I think it is strictly forbidden for you to do that, since it involves other people's avatars, and you must get permission from those in control of them to write anything about what their characters do or say. If you say something like "senators rose" then it's fine, because it doesn't automatically include everyone.Quote:

Yes, in this special case. For the usual sessions in the curia I agree with TCV.
However, I have to remind you all for RP-Reasons in the curia not to confuse the word dictator in its actual meaning with the rank of dictator of ancient rome, which was a highly popular and respected rank, and nothing like a tyrant - at least not until 50 BC
If law = compliance with the law, there wouldn't be any criminals, would there?
But regardless of that, my objection was mainly meant for future references anyway.
Haha touche
In fact, the correct (polite) way to address someone are the first 2 names :)
eg: addressing me in the normal polite way would be Quintus Aemilius.
It was not since 1AD that using the last name became more of a habit. Calling someone by the last part (won't bother using the latin names for each part) was considered rude mostly. Even by 1BC it was still usually not done, only in the radical progressive circles.
The third part was usually only used when the subject was 3rd person, and confusion was possible.
example
marcus brutus and Gaius Tiddlypus are talking about Publius Cornelius.
Unfortunately, the subject is about a war in gaul, and there are 2 Publius Corneliusses active there.
Therefore we specify which one we're talking about with the 3rd part.
conclusion: as a rule, use the first 2 parts ;-) with few exceptions on random occassions (or simply when being rude)
I wish everyone would stick to this rule, as it's 1) RP-correct 2) polite and 3) less confusing.
This was actually a law introduced by Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix, after the Civil War during his dictatorship. On all public occassions, all men should stand and applaud the bearer of a coronia civica.
So everytime you walk into the senate, we rise and applause. Same thing on court occassions, comita sessions etc.
I love history lessons. However, if your really friendly with someone (no, not like that :sweatdrop:) would you just call them by their first first name?
And if your talking about yourself if the third person, what would you use?
Calling people by their first name was generally not done in the early republic.
Especially not in public.
Of course when in private, first names or nicknames could easily be applied.
But in public? Always the 2 parts
If you like history lessons
Quintus Aemilius Regillus
= Praenomen + Nomen + cognomen :)
Similar to our First name - Family name and nickname (though unlike now, the latter sometimes became hereditary)
Even when talking about yourself, you should apply praenomen+nomen. (unless ur talking to yourself in private. Even there I would use both, since it was standard behaviour to use both)
I know it is weird, because modern society only uses first names :)
But in the roman time, general practise was as above :)
Awesome! Thanks. I agree people should use it, but unfortunately, there are those ignorant of it (like I was just a few minutes ago), so it would require that it was put up as a reminder somewhere where especially new players would easily see it. Now that I know I will try to use it, though.Quote:

I took notice... only no one took notice of my need to be reminded of it. :embarassed:
In the curia it says Carthrage declared war on us, but I cant find anythign about that in the consul reports.
Roleplayed in preperation for upcoming event.
gah! it seems people have not seen the story yet, go here:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=2142450
and I'll edit the post in the Curia about Cicero (or Manius Claudius) raising the issue of carthage)
Can someone give me the composition of our legions?
Just curious bout the historical correctness ;)
Don't have acces to the game (work atm, girlfriend whole wkend ;p).
PS: should you wonder why I haven't spoken in the Curia yet, I feel my character is too junior for it :)
I'm a mere bakcbencher for now ;)
Fair enough :beam:.
Legio II is, for the moment, 3 hastati, 1 principes, 1 rorraii, 2 acensai, and 1 equites, plus the generals. I think...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Those interested, in the spoiler you can find an accurate consular legion (actually 2 legions)
Therefore, legions under the command of a mere praetor, should be halved.
Text above is actually a quote from the following roman playguide:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=101787
I've been using it for years (it used to be an RTR guide, later adapted to EB).
There are some nice tips which can be used in general aswel.
thanks, great! I'm very interested in such information
Hey, how does 1 unit of Principes become 2 units of Triarii? Am I missing something here?
Nope...veterans deserve to get upgraded. Also, we need more elite fighters for Illyria, seeing as Epirus has really up its military
Bah, the whole story thing is just a plot between Everyone and Baen to increase legion 1's standing with easy victories. Bunch of crap.
What are you on about?
A unit of principes has as many men as a unit of Triarii, so there should only be 1 new unit of Triarii.
Its adding a unit desert...no one had any problem with TCV wanting it
guys, it's a roleplay game. the argueing and plotting is only to be done in the curia. don't take it peronal
Do you see any other legions availiable? Mines the only one that doesnt look like it will be coming back for a couple of years yet. Epirus isnt going to nicely leave us alone.
You aren't following me.
The Principes are being replaced with Triarii to simulate their greater experience + wealth, right?
So is each Princeps dividing into 2 Trarii?
This isn't RP-wise or a personal attack or anything, it just doesn't make sense mathematically.
Brought up from the Hastati and other Cohorts as well, whose units will then serve to be the new recruits that will have come in. So really, its like adding a unit of Hastati or Rorrarii, theres just no point getting two triarri, disbanding the hastati or rorrarii, then getting another hastati or roarrii
I see what desert wants to say. aren't the triarii-units smaller than the principes units?
Really? But still, they would be, what, 90 men each?
wasn't there a minimod which halfs the triarii to 80 men or so? maybe we should consider it to intall for BtSH.
But however, if the Triarii are 90 men each, and the principes 160 men each, then we would either lose 70 men for no reason, or gain 20 men - I'm sure we can think of an excuse ^^
