While I enjoy the occasional (sweet) bubbly with a fine meal, generally speaking I'm definitely a beer/ale guy. As I've previously stated elsewhere, I was permanently converted by a couple home-brewer friends of mine. :2thumbsup:

There is nothing better than mowing the lawn/going for a jog/playing sport then sitting in the sun and drinking a nice cool beer.
Plus there's the issue of being a student and not being able to afford much.
For a Belgian style white beer it really doesn't resemble Belgian white beer.
Where is the foam? Why is there fruit on the glass?
Sure Belgium has a wide collection of fruitbeers but at least they taste and look like beers.
I have 2 very strict rules about my beer:
1. If you need to drink ice and ice cold to be able to enjoy it, then it isn't worth drinking (I'm looking at you Heiniken).
2. If the beer starts to resemble an alcopop instead of real beer, then it isn't worth drinking.
Also,
3. Beer should not have bubbles fighting to float to the top. Any bubbles that appear should be the result of fermentation, not added later with carbonation.
4. Beer should have a small head. I've paid for the beer, not the foam dammit. If I want to drink air, I can do so for free without pouring it into a glass.
5. If you're only drinking it to get drunk, it isn't worth drinking. Beer should be an interesting, not throwaway drink, whatever its ABV. Really weak beers generally aren't worth drinking, not because of their low ABV, but because little care has gone into their making, and they taste bland.

Of the ones that are commonly available in the pubs I frequent, Spitfire, Old Peculier, Abbot Ale, Broadside. Then there are others that supplement the usuals, and I usually try some of those as well, although I don't remember their names. Some of those beers don't work of course, but there's a good variety, and I enjoy trying unfamiliar beers.

Another safe tactic is to compare the beer with one that doesn’t actually exist. Because the beer ranks swell every week, even the most knowledgeable of beer experts won’t call you out, for fear of appearing “out of the loop.” So instead actually stating an opinion of a beer, say it is “a lot like The Abandoned Shoe Factory Brewery’s new Soothsucker Pine Sap Ale, in the sense that they’re completely different.”Shepherd Neame's Spitfire
Theakston's Old Peculier
Greene King's Abbot Ale
