Joooray... if England are knocked out in the Round of Sixteen by Serbia, how do they miss six penalties?
Unless you're saying they miss one against the USA, one against Algeria, one against Slovakia and then three against Serbia? They're not that bad at them! xD
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I base that final three on the fact that England currently hold the record for most penalties missed in a World Cup shootout (Lampard, Gerrard and Carragher against Portugal, Germany '06) and that I doubt any team would miss three and the shootout still be in a position to carry on unless the opposing team were equally as bad!

They were absolutely god-awful penalties; Lampard and Gerrard are both prolific scorers from the spot for their clubs, particularly the former, and yet both miss one of the most crucial penalties they will ever take on the international stage. I can only think that the circumstances of Rooney's sending-off (let's be honest, Ronaldo was interfering with the officials) had taken their toll on Lamps and Stevie GBH, and thus they failed to convert.
Owen Hargreaves is a fantastic penalty-taker who always seems to place them just out of the goalkeeper's reach (see his effort during the Champion's League final in 2008; Cech didn't have a chance :3), shame he's not going to South Africa.

Re: 2010 World Cup Bracket Prediction Thread
Just to clarify, the tiebreaker for English penalties is for shanked kicks. Saved PKs don't count. If the keeper touches it, it doesn't count towards the total.

Re: 2010 World Cup Bracket Prediction Thread
Ronaldo interfered like any other player does, especially when his teammate is stepped on. Rooney should have: Watched his step, then watched his manners then watched his mouth in front of the ref. They simply failed to convert because they bucked under the pressure and Ricardo guessed the sides. Simple.

Re: 2010 World Cup Bracket Prediction Thread
Hmm. I'm leaning towards Ghana getting second spot in Group D over Australia. Having read up on their tactics, etc, they really stand a better chance than the defensive minded Aussies, even without Essien. I wish I made my predictions after doing that. Regardless that is a tight, tight group. With 4 very tactically aware sides, but Germany has all the flair this time, with Ozil, Khedira and Kroos. Plus they are the World Cup specialists (with players like Klose, Podolski and Schweinstieger).
Regardless, it really is Brazil's to lose. They are a solid unit, with fantastic tactics, much like Mourinho's at Inter last season. They may not have the flair of a typical Brazil side, but they control games, compress the space and are lightning fast on the break-away.

I didn't really think that through.
Well I'll change it, also I wasn't only the missed PKs.
Time to cast your predictions for the first matchday(s). Already, as we speak, those who think themselves knowkledgeable about anything football are having bitter arguments about who's right or wrong. This time, however, the Tavern will offer an objective measure about that.
Time for you all to join the fray and show the world who really knows his footy!

ohh and a winner ?
my brain tells me the Germans on penaltys my heart tells me England are going to take the thing 4-2 in extra time, with a hattrick from rooney sealing the golden boot (patriotism and loyalty the bane of football prediction!)
Winner
England!
Edit: even though you cant underestimate the Germans you can overestimate them, semi final place rather than final
Also Brazil for 3rd spot!

I had to make predictions on scores of every other match in the group stages so as to be able to figure out who'll make out as the 1st or 2nd and/or who'll be left out as the 3rd where points, or even the goal differences against each other, are equal. I can give out scores if you'd like to or should I save it for the other WC thread ?

I don't really have a problem with waiting til Monday for the tiebreaks. Your group placement selections are different enough from everyone else where it probably won't matter anyway.

I have to say that I don't agree with this; they may have been drubbed 7-0, but they have scored a goal and gave Brazil a very good game; they're also in a very tough group where they're unhighly likely to come out with anything at all. On the other hand, Honduras haven't gotten off the mark yet with points or goals yet, haven't looked likely to either; the scorelines of both games have flattered them, because Spain and Chile both should have scored alot more than they did. They're in a fairly open group in my opinion; you'd expect Spain to top it, but beyond that, the other three teams are on relatively equal footing compared to the Group of Death.
Just my own opinion, though.
