I was not happy with them for that. So now we just have quails but are getting some more doves, and from now on I will be looking after them, not my parents. I felt really depressed after they murdered the birds, I had the doves domesticated too, I was able to handle them and they didn't mind at all. There was even one baby finch who I trained to hop on my finger. :cry2:
Anyway, I'll stop blubbing and get you some photos of the new quails anyway tomorrow (it's 11:33pm at the moment and they'll be sleeping), though they aren't spectacular and the avairy looks pretty empty with just them in there.
But for now you'll just have to settle for a picture of our damp doormat:

And as you can see they've been busy since they've arrived. :nice: There are some eggs although I'm worried they laid them far to close to the edge of the avairy since the dog likes to site and watch them from that side, so she may scare the quails away from the nest:

@Makanyane That's what everyone says. And I think it's that kind of attitude that's given her a big opinion of herself and why she goes hyperactive around people. So whenever visitors arrive she leaps up and bounces around in front of them as if to say "I'm here! I'm here! Don't worry, I know you really want to play with me! Look at me! I know I'm so cute aren't I! Over here! Oh you're such a tease pretending to want to talk to the other people in the house! Look at me! ..." etc. until somebody starts acknowledging her. ~D
On that last picture she looks like a very happy dog. :2thumbsup:

No I haven't. But I'm sure if I got a baby Kea it'd be possible to train it. Though I don't think people are allowed to have them as pets cause they're endangered. I've never actually seen a wild Kea, only ones in captivity cause I've never been to the South Island.Quote:

And our doves were all beautiful white doves, apart from a wild dove that my brother caught (not harming it in anyway of course). That one was brown, I think called a Ringneck dove.

I don't want to move the nest because my grandfather told me years ago never to try touch a nest with eggs in because often the mother bird will abandon it. Although the mother quail is still sitting on the nest, I checked today so I don't know. Maybe they'll hatch, or maybe they won't. I'm not sure I want to try stick a wooden board against the side of the cage either though cause I wouldn't want a gust of wind knocking it over onto the nest. If they do hatch I'll be sure to post pictures cause baby quails are always very cute, especially the way they trail around behind the mother in a long line. :nice:
As to loving to have an avairy like ours, I don't really know why. My grandfather built the avairy for us more than a decade ago, and supplied many of the birds that have lived in it, because he used to run a pet store. It really isn't anything special. I'm sure you could build one at your place. It wouldn't be hard.
So where does your knowledge of NZ birds come from? Do you have some birds to show?
Yeah, she does get a bit hot during summer. But she malted solidly and lost all the excess fur from winter in about 3 days. Our living room looked like the dog had exploded in it. There was fur everywhere. And she isn't a husky, she's a samoyed :2thumbsup:Quote:

My parents have always kept samoyed dogs since before I was born. Which is why when we had a Labrador about 7 years ago it was my dog and they expected me to look after it.

A few weeks ago I caught a ringneck (wood pigeon) who seemed to be injured. I'd observed him for a few hours. He didn't fly but only walked on the ground. He held one wing in an unusual way. I then decided that I need to know exactly what's up. I've never caught such a large bird before. Of course he tried to evade me. My fiancee assisted and I finally caught him using a blanket. We immediately drove to a vetenarian nearby but it turned out that the shoulder part of the wing was completely destroyed and all bloody. There was nothing to be done for him anymore. He had to be put to sleep. If he had stayed outside with the broken wing he would've fallen prey to a cat (from whom he got the injury in the first place) or been driven over by a car (big street nearby). I was very sad that I wasn't able to help. I would've taken care of him without second thought.

That's quite a sad story. I'm rather ashamed to admit that there are a few bird killers in our house. Firstly my parents, and secondly the worse one is my cat. Though fortunately she is getting too old and fat to keep catching them. She used to kill the pukeko chicks and then dump the carcasses on the front door step so we'd have to dispose of them quickly before anyone saw them.
And then the poor mother pukeko at the park across the road from our house could be seen walking about calling out for the baby birds. ~:(
Also we have a few birds which have been here quite a while. There is one tui which is usually found in the kowhai tree at the front of our house. We get pleanty of sparrows and there is one fantail who actually likes to fly into our house from time to time when we leave the sliding door open, he flys into the living room, then the kitchen then the living room again. Goes *meep-meep* and then flys back out the sliding door again. Also he often flys around people when they are in the back yard meeping at them. ~D I can't get a photo though because he never stays still.
Actually once the laptop is back I'll upload a photo of the picture hanging on the wall of when my parents' first Samoyed called Cassie had puppies. I think I was 3 at the time so I don't remember them but the professional picture of them on the wall is really cool.
Well I finally got my hands on the digital camera again because my mother had taken it to the shop. So I took a photo of the photo hanging on the wall of Cassie's puppies. And I was mistaken, I think I was only 1 when they were sold or I might not even have been born because the photo was taken in 1988, I've never actually asked my parents about when they sold the puppies. Also maybe this post will reinvigorate this topic and other members will post. Because I'm sure there are pleanty of other pet owners on the forum.

My uncle has had samoydes for as long as I can remember. I think I might even have a few pictures somewhere. I'll look later.
That doesn't surprise me. I think most people who've owned a samoyed once always own one. They are very gentle, good with kids, can pull sleds if needed to, absolutely adorable, clever, loyal and full of life. In my house there are 2 types of pictures on the wall: family photos and dog photos.Quote:

My parents had puppies before they had kids (gee that sounds odd :sweatdrop:) and I've grown up with samoyeds and our dog at the time I was born often watched over me when I was a toddler while I was playing outside as if I were her own. :laugh4:
She died when I was 10, hit by a car just a little way away from our house and some of our neighbours brought her to us the next day (because everyone knows our dog). So she was buried in the back yard and we planted a small tree where she was buried and I helped my dad make a white cross to put up over her resting place.
It's odd how we can become more attached to pets than some of our friends and family. For example, I could write a full length biography of each of the dogs we've had but would struggle with writing one about my younger brother. ~D

Thats a nice looking samoyed. It reminds me of Caspar who is grandfather of Lexi (our current samoyed), but he had to be put down 2 years ago when he couldn't walk anymore.Quote:

Afterall, how can you not feel that way, when they look to you for everything in life, are the most loyal and devoted creatures on the planet, who would never, ever, ever betray or hurt you? Sorry for taking so long to respond I've been busy recently and forgot to reply to this topic, I've just gotten home from my French exam (my last exam forever :birthday2:)
Yeah, I think that's a rather good reason why pets become as much a part of the family as a sibling.
And, to finally answer your question, the puppies were 6 weeks old at the time of that photo.
Congrats on your last exam, its a great feeling, isn't it?
Never mind, couple of years down the line and you'll be in uni :sad:
