Times for me that are good are usually in the afternoon on the week (West Coast). Nigel, you're free to take command of the peasents this mission.

Meanwhile, however, I don´t intend to put all my eggs into one basket (and also want to give everyone the chance to do at least one mission this month). So here comes mission #4 :

The copper mines in the mountains have produced copper ore, which has been processed in the smelters to raw copper. This has been cast into ingots of a size that can still be carried by a strong peasant. 100 lots are now waiting to be carried down into the valley to the mints and smithies and I am looking for one mercenary to escort them. Basic payment will be 400 Florins for signing up and, as the copper is somewhat more valuable (12 Fl apiece), the bonus on successful delivery will be 250 Florins.

But out of character now. If some player can't make it to an appointed battle - no problem. We all have other commitments and no one will hold it against you if you say that this game is not your number 1 priority. It is - after all - only a game. The plus side is, that, unlike other tournaments, if you miss your battle you only miss one mission, not the whole game. You go empty handed, but there are more battles for you to come. But I think it is only fair that those who do come out to fight receive the full benefit of the mission.
That said, I know it is not always easy to arrange for battles. Especially since we have players from Europe and the US alike. So here is an idea that might help.
Lieutenants
Every leader of a bandit or mercenary group can recruit lieutenants who can take command of their armies if they themselves can't. These lieutenants could be clanmates, friends or just anyone who will reply to a recruitment call. This can make it easier to arrange for battles (especially cross-Atlantic) and also has the advantage to allow more players to join the game without much more work for the game-master. For anyone who wants I am happy to add the names of their staff officers to the list of their army.

I've got another idea for consideration. If someone can't make it, they appoint another group to take the mission then split the winnings 75:25 (the 75 going to the replacement warband). The group who fought the battle can also take another mission for themselves (as they were fighting for the first group).

I know with these things, if you are not careful, you can quickyl end up with a complicated network of rules which, in the end, no one understands anymore.
I am always tempted to keep regulations to a minimum and allow the players to use their own imagination and creativity to come up with solutions which are fun and help the game progress.
In that sense, if anyone finds that he can't make it to a battle but finds a "stand-in", I am inclined to allow it and leave it up to the two of them to negotiate whose troops are used and at what cost a player is "selling" his rights to a certain mission.
Just as long as things remain sensible and without "exploiting the system", that should be all right.

Strike lets me know that, due to his real live requirements he cannot find the time to play this campaign. So he is stepping down to make room for a new player. Thanks, Strike, for letting us know. That's the decent thing to do.

Well, we are nearing the end of the month. Army payment is due and it seems some of our warriors will end up in the red.
But as promised, since this is our first month, I will give credit to everyone - for this time only.
Some missions are still ongoing. Mission #4 is still open for one bandit to sign up and Tiger and Shaka still have to arrange meeting for mission #3.
I know, Shaka you are having problems with your e-mail, so if you want to use this thread to make arrangements, please feel free.

Well, the delivery of wood for the building of the Cathedral of Cologne is a bit delayed. The master builder is not too happy and has decided to continue work on a part of the building that requires more stone than wood. So he has asked me now for a shipment of 200 lots of stone. The stone is worth 6 Florins apiece and I am paying 500 Florins for a mercenary to escort the shipment. There will be a 250 Fl bonus on successful delivery.
But again there is a chance that one of the bandits wants to intercept the transport.

errr, that shipment you and Sulla wanted to rob, that went to the market safe and sound. Both mercs were there and had a nice walk through the countryside with it as none of the bandits showed up.
Not to worry, though. There is enough else around. Mission #4 still needs a bandit (previous page) and mission #5 is still free for all.

Amatsu climbs off of his horse and walks into Nigel's mansion. It seems Nigel has been doing well for himself, despite Amatsu's own previous failure. The front guards were less than courteous, but still, Amatsu pressed on, after of course, knocking them on their arses and leaving them naked in the street. He stormed quickly into Nigel's office, tossing the newest mission posting onto the desk. "I want to take this mission. I have something to prove." Amatsu worried that the last defeat of his army would interfere with his business... but he hoped, that Nigel would reward his loyalty by granting him a chance to redeem himself with mission# 5. Amatsu eyed Nigel coldly, waiting, and waiting, for a response. He didn't have time to play around with this one, his men were bitter, and so was he. "So mate, what is it? Can I escort this stone?"
