The Packers had a bit of a rough start but ended playing very well, while the Vikings were the opposite (but had a better season end than the Packers had a start).
Jets game looks interesting. Funny interception swap there.

Tough loss for San Diego. "Punkt in dey own crib" as one wag put it.
Better, more spectacular games next week.
I'll say it again, they should remove field goals from the game. The jets didn't lose that game, the chargers didn't lose it. Nate kaeding lost it. It's supposed to be a team sport
Stepping back from the everyday turmoil of american football...
I agree. Let's either go totally football, and outlaw the forward pass, or fully embrace it (the fwd p) and go for the spectacular display of nobody-gets-killed 1800's war simulation that we have now.
Anyone think the reffing sucked?
I do. They (the ref crew) called every teeny-tiny infraction possible. One-second long incidental facemasks. Pass interferance for what looked to be touch-and-go's. Bah.
I wanted to see football, not Court TV.
Nevertheless: the upstart Jets overcoming the statistically favored Chargers (who got no respect or mention all season). Good on 'em. I hope they go to the big game. They and their (sorta) rookie quarterback and rookie coach prove the old axiom "on any given Sunday"...
Go Jets!!
I do not believe that attempting to play the game and score is necessarily unsportsmanlike under any circumstances, regardless of the score. However, some disagree and I'd like to hear why.
To get the ball rolling, it might help if I explain why I think it's perfectly all right.
1. The fans paid good money to watch a game being played. Action, regardless of score, is more interesting than taking a knee or running the ball into a tightly packed formation on purpose. So, just for the pure entertainment value, I'd rather see every play be an attempt to win yardage or score.
2. This is the NFL, not high school football. Those players certainly won't boo-hoo if they lost by 30 points instead of 10, for example. Or they shouldn't; they are professionals, I'd assume.
3. Not playing your best game is insulting to your opponent, IMO, especially if it isn't practice play. No need to treat the other team like infants.
4. It isn't the offense's responsibility to avoid scoring. It is the defense's responsibility to attempt a stop. If they can't, that's too bad... it's part of the game.
5. Some individual players might want to score a touchdown or add yards to their record. It is professional football; you only get so many years, games, and chances to score or do well. What if you wanted to beat the record for the most touchdown receptions? Even if you didn't have that goal in mind, why should you ever consciously attempt to avoid such a thing?
6. Even when it is too late to save a game, shouldn't there be some attempt by the non-winning team to figure out how to stop an aggressive and dominant offense? Consider it practice (the hardest kind) for next year. Make them reveal their tricks, try to counter them. Fight the good fight until it is over... try to improve.
7. Your star players feeling down because the game is over, they've lost? Allow your second or third-stringers to have a shot at making a play against a better team. Maybe you'll discover talent you never knew you really had...
So, what's the big faux pas with "running up the score"? Unless the other team is injured to the point there's only 10 men on the field, the game should continue, or they should forfeit somehow. Just my preference, but that's me. What do you think?
I think part of why Farve threw that last touchdown pass may have been his record against the Cowboys in the playoffs before this game; 0-3 IIRC. I think there are times where running up the score can e bad sportsmanship, but this (vikings cowboys) game didn't get there.
And like one of the announcers said; If you don't like it, stop it.
Watching Troy Aikman was priceless as well.
CR
Someone has to tell that officiating crew to allow the players to play. Interupting the flow of the game for such minor & lame infractions ruins the enjoyment for most fans.
Field goals and special teams are a big part of the game, and though they look routine, obviously they aren't. Here's an interesting blurb:
Kaeding is jinxed *or throwing the game for you conspiracy theorists*, time for San Diego to find a new kicker.Quote:
• Nate Kaeding missed three FGA for the Chargers and was the first kicker to go 0-3 in an NFL playoff game since 1995. He only missed three in the regular season and is 3-9 at home in the postseason in his career.
Except for this game the playoffs have been a snore. Blowouts aren't fun to watch unless your favorite team is administering the spanking.
Here's hoping next week's conference finals are more exciting. Too bad the Super Bowl can't be Saints vs Vikings, but I do hope the Jets get by the Colts and get a shot to repeat the Joe Willy miracle.
What about the Packer/Cardinals game? Highest scoring game in playoff history going into overtime wouldn't fall into the snore category. But I do agree with your comment. Fortunately, I've missed most of these snore-fests. I also missed the Chargers/Jets game and tuned into the NFL Network to find out the result. As I watched the highlights, which was all Chargers through the first three quarter, I kept thinking "And the Chargers lost?" However, the result is to be expected when you blow all those scoring attempts.
:laugh4:Quote:
"I thought it was classless," Brooking said. "I thought it was B.S. Granted, we get paid to stop them, but we had zero timeouts left. I didn't think there was any call for that."
Shiancoe laughed after hearing Brooking's comments. "OK, we apologize. I'm sorry. Better?"
Quote:
"We don't care what Keith Brooking says," Williams said. "He was about to get his ass whupped on our sideline over there. It don't matter. Nobody said anything when they blew out the Eagles [the past two weeks].
"It's the playoffs. It ain't no regular-season game. If you lose, you go home. We take no pity on them. Do they expect us to? I don't care about no Brooking. He can say whatever he wants to say."
Somewhere, Marty Schottenheimer is laughing.
Ya know, I forgot about that game probably because I stopped watching it after the Cards took that big lead early. I do the same thing during the Super Bowls. I get bored with all the commercials and/or the game is so one sided I end up doing something else. A lot of times I miss those great comebacks. Being a free agent fan I guess that's to be expected.
That was actually a pretty good game, the way the Packers rallied, and I felt it was kinda sad, the way they lost.
In any case, I liked watching the Vikings steamroll the Cowboys. That is one good team, though I feel it could've been a lot more exciting. In any case, Vikes vs. Saints next week should be great!
Finally, some stats to back me up. Where's the action?
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Well, compare that to baseball or golf, it's similar. The actual time the ball is in play is short, but more more significant than in nascar or soccer. Well, not in baseball I guess :laugh4:
Basketball probably has the action/signifance per minute. Tennis would, but there are lots of commercials in tennis too.
But the time between plays in football is usually spent on replays, talking about the game, watching the play be set up.
More cheerleader time would be nice though :laugh4:
It does make one question why you should waste 3+ hours sitting around watching 11 minutes of playing.
Heck, they don't need highlights, they need some show that just shows the actual plays, with all the time in between cut out. You could fit two full games in a half hour with commercials, or three in a full hour with plenty of replays.
And they should definitely have more cheerleader time.
CR
Well you're wrong.
Anytime you kick a feild goal the offense failed to its job. A feild goal is like a constilation prize for moving the ball somewhat well.
How about the jets D bending but not breaking?
There were plenty of points in that game (the unsportsmanlike call being the one I remember the most) that the chargers shot themselves in the foor.
As for Brookings comments: they dissapoint me. I once had 63 points dropped on me when I played Jv and they were chucking bombs until the clock hit 0.
He gets payed millions to stop people, Farve gets paid millions to not be stopped. Suck it up.
NEWS FLASH: Police and ambulances rushed to Kaeding's home, on a report that he'd attempted suicide - he tried to OD on sleeping pills...Quote:
Nate kaeding lost it.
but choked after 3
Then he tried to shoot himself
but fired wide right
then wide left
Then tried to hang himself...
but couldn't kick the chair out.

Indy and Minn here. But like they say: "On any given Sunday...".
especially the playoffs.
Take it from a Bills fan, I feel your pain.

Well at least the game was competitive. Here's hoping for a shootout in the Big Easy!
CR
Well, I think the game is going to fall short of my predicted total points, but my God is it tense.
Wow, the vikings just imploded. 6 fumbles, 2 interceptions? Penalty while in field goal range with 15 seconds left? Favre throws interception instead of running for 6 yards?
I feel sorry for Farve. So close to another Super Bowl, and he throws it away. :embarassed:
Not very impressed with the Saint's highly touted offense, which didn't do much the second half. With that many turnovers there shouldn't be an overtime.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
CR
Minnesota outgained NO by over 200 yards, and had +10 minutes on the time of possession. Only the 5 turnovers saved the Saints. Congrats and all to the Saints fans, but the Colts are going to chew them up if they don't play better D.
*cries*
To paraphrase the immortal words of an ex-coach of both Super Bowl teams, "When you turn the ball over 5 times, you ain't going to beat anybody."
Yo?? Did Brees just jinx his team? I thought there was a major superstition about not picking up the conference championship trophy? I think he might have just put the whammy on his crew...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I raged so hard at that game... if it wasn't the fumbles or Favre's retarded pass during the Vikes's last drive before OT, it was the ref's :daisy: calls during OT (that 15 yd penalty for pass obstruction was very debatable, and IMO so was that call where the pass that set the Saints up for a field goal was complete). Minnesota should be in the Super Bowl ~
~;) It does seem strange, but maybe football players aren't as superstitious as hockey players. Then again, after the Pens touched the Wales trophy last year and then won Lord Stanley, maybe they won't care either.
And isn't Yoyoma1910 from N'awlins? Haven't seen him around in a while...
Yeah, Shai is a big Who Dat fan.
Canadians who are foolish enough to publicly admit any hockey indifference get deported to the U.S.ChairmanLord Stanley is watching....
Not to worry bout dat curse. Dee Saints is from de Voodoo Capital of de U.S.
You think Archie can convince his son to do a Farve?
Just over 4 hours until kick-off in Miami. Make your picks, fellas.
Go colts!
Technically 1,2, and 3 in the pool are up for grabs, but I don't know how the tiebreaker works.
Tie-breaker is event driven (usually MNF total score). Weeks without MNF use the total score for the final game of the week - the Superbowl, this week. But I take your point about Pool Standings; depending on who picked what team, any one of the top three pickers for this year could be tied with 2 others.
Also at stake are poll bragging rights. Depending on who wins, either johnhughthom/slashandburn or Yaseikhaan will be able to say that they picked the winner from the very start of the season.
Woot, Superbowl!!! All right, steel yourselves, gentlemen, I want to try this:
*ahem*
"Who... is... that?"
I predict...Colts by a touchdown.
But I want a good game!
CR
No one's posted here since before the game?
Well, I'm glad the Saints won after that onsides kick to start off the second quarter.
EDIT: And the commercials didn't seem as good as previous years. Some good ones (Like Farve's), but a lot were just so-so.
CR
hellz yeah!!!!!! Saint skicked some serious ass, but it was still a great game. just about everyone I know said they wanted the Saints to win, but they were gonna lose. I never lost faith, not after all those games where they wiped the floor with the other teams.
I came in right before the start of the 3rd quarter, which apparently was where it got interesting. some very nice field goals by the Saints kicker, 3 in the game, all past 40 yard line. cant say the same for the Colts kicker....
i find it funny that the Colts, with 1 vote in the poll, and the Saints, with 2, both went and had such great seasons. I dont think anyone expected the Saints to govthis year
Good, solid game. Not as epic as the last two, but definitely a good way to end the season. That onside kick was probably the ballsiest call in Super Bowl history. Also, Hartley should have won the MVP.
Condolences to khaan, BTW.
it was a great game, but the commercial were below expectations.
This sucks. A loss, and I'll probably be ill tomorrow due to consuming a dinner of chicken wings and puppy chow.
Not the best day to be a Hoosier.
Ajax
Meh. It was a deserved win for the Saints but I just felt like the Colts could've, should've played better.
You gotta hand it to the Saints. They've lived off other team's mistakes all season and made them pay. Somewhere in New Orleans there's a witchdoctor with a Peyton Manning doll with a big pin sticking in his right arm, and he's cacklin his :daisy: off.
