Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
you know , those floating banners , they are cool when looking at an army from far away , and also they help to mantain order in battle , however , I'm tempted to disable them , but last time I tried I couldn't know which were my troops and which were the enemy :smash:

Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
Nowadays, disabled. Battles look better, even if they're harder to follow.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
I play with banners and green arrows disabled. It does indeed make it somewhat hard to tell who your troops are and in a forest it becomes even harder to see where they are, but I think it adds to the realism.

Fourthed.
Indeed it makes battles more realistic. After some battles you'll get used to it. Plus, after all you're the General and you should know about the locations of your units.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
Fifthed (awful word xD).
Also have it disabled, there are still other "helpers" to make clear where your units are. E.g. the faint "glow" your selected units show or simply your minimap in highest zoom level...usually, that works just fine for me.:smash:

Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
disabled
let the battle be a bloody mess.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
of course its disabled, what a foolish question......:clown:
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
Well more of us have voted yes so far, so apparently not ;) Don't be afraid to admit it people. I know it's more realistic, but I used to play with them off and it would just get annoying, so I leave them on now.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
I play without banners. I once turned them off, and while I didn't mind banners, I preferred the units without them.
Not that big a deal that people make it to be, imho, including in screenshots in the Screenshot-of-the-month contests.

Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
its a very close vote, yet nearly everyone seems to write they have them off lol. I keep them on, mainly because i cant tell without scrolling over every unit whether they are routing or not. I like the battles to look realistic, but in the balance between realism and gameplay i usually go for the gameplay option...dont hate me for it :2thumbsup:

Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
I've been playing disabled ever since I saw this thread. A bit more confusing but definitely adds more realism and fun to the game.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
uh, many mentioned no banners = realism? But doesn't ancient armies carries banners during battles? Or am I wrong?

They do still carry banners. Zoom in on any unit and you'll see a standard-bearer unit, along with an officer.
They didn't carry massive, skyscraper-sized pieces of cloth to identify themselves.

Exactly, and much less let that banner start blinking to say to their enemies "we are routing, come cut us down".

Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
I play with no banners, no green arrows and no ridiculous glowing red battefield boundaries. Much much better that way.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
Ideally there would be a button to turn them off temporarily, just to take screenies and to soakm in the glory.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
how can you disable the red lines?:sweatdrop:
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
Disabled. I tend not to fight in forests much so I can keep track of my units easily enough without them.
EDIT: red lines etc. are in EB configuration link.

Didn't know you could disable them in the EB configuration. But what I did was alpha channel out the unit indicators and border lines and dropped the files in the EB data/textures folder. Like I said, makes the battlefield look a lot better and adds to immersion.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
Actually it might be the EB preferences link that I've only just remembered about, but it is definitely one of those two.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
I don't see any reference to redlines in configurations nor preferences :inquisitive:
ontopic, well it's a pretty closepoll , but most of the replies say no :smash: interesting
Its a pain during forest battles:shifty:
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
I'm not sure it makes any difference in forest battles; you can't see the banners anyway.

I think it calls them battlefield borders or something.
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
AFAIK, to disable the battlefield red lines you add the -movie_cam option to your shortcut. It's not in the EB config/prefs shortcut for sure.
EDIT: Tested and confirmed.

Not much, but the brighly coloured banners are easier to spot between the trees than those drab soldiers.

even if I use the trivial script?

IIRC, if you use the trivial script to run EB, you need to add any options you wish to run RTW.exe with in the script itself (ebconfig.xml).

Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
After reading this thread i disabled banners in my current romani campaign, turning the planned quick sweep through the woodlands of Illyria into a desaster. I lost almost my whole cavalry and a good deal of my allied celt infantry to units i failed to notice in the forests. Only by sheer numbers i managed to eventually overwhelm the Epirote Army.
Sure takes some time to adapt :) I also play with general cam and disabled overview map btw.

Wow general cam with disabled map. That is hardcore.
I also play with general cam and cant imagine not using map (at least on huge unit sizes ).
Unless the terrain is favourable you just cant see what is going on on the other flank. I use minimap to gain this knowledge and also to give commands to units.
When I was not using general cam I didnt think much about minimap, but it is really great.

Sounds harder than it is - i usually split up the army in center, right and left, commanding the stronger and mostly decisive wing. After the initial impact of the armies, i give control of the other wings to the AI.

I do the same. The only way to command on huge unit sizes. Still map is very useful. Without it you have no clue what is going on on the other wing. And if you send small detachment somewhere you have no idea where it is and what its doing.
Dont event start me on forest battles when you can only control 3 units that are next to you. Map is indispensable at such occasions.

WHAT?! :laugh4:
Wow! That is the most shocking statement I've heard in a while. To think that you trust the AI so completely as to give them control of an entire section of the battle line is pretty... "amazing," to say the least.

Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
Always play with banners off and general cam on.

Ooh Foots well 'ard init :beam:. I enjoy watching the battle from the enemy point of view, and sometimes from afar, just to get a real view of the whole battle without controlling anything. Dont you miss out on this with General Cam?
-
Re: Do you play with banners enabled or disabled?
General cam is just too debilitating for me. It may be nice for hardcore gamers, but I actually like to scroll to the edge of the map and watch the countryside, or the battle from afar.

Aye, can't get good battle screenshots if you've only got the one viewpoint available to you. I like to mix up close stuff with open shots from afar so people can get an idea of the bigger picture.

wonder if the best players play with the general's cam:inquisitive:
but that cam is hardcore!

As i said, i control the decisive wing myself, including most of the cavalry, i mostly use some skirmishers behind the other wings to protect from enemy mounted units.

Yes, I miss them. But I don't miss the absolutely lazy way I could win nearly every time. Things are really quite hard nowadays. I don't tend to lose by so much more, but I do lose more troops in a battle. That added to the policy of always ending the battle when the scroll comes up rather than spending all the time killing as many of the run aways as possible, means that winning badly can turn some expansions into phyrric ones quite quickly.
