I play with banners and green arrows disabled. It does indeed make it somewhat hard to tell who your troops are and in a forest it becomes even harder to see where they are, but I think it adds to the realism.

Indeed it makes battles more realistic. After some battles you'll get used to it. Plus, after all you're the General and you should know about the locations of your units.![]()

Also have it disabled, there are still other "helpers" to make clear where your units are. E.g. the faint "glow" your selected units show or simply your minimap in highest zoom level...usually, that works just fine for me.![]()
