This must be one of those authentic 18th century tactics they were talking about in the previews.
"Remember lads, when the cannonballs start flying, group up. If there's enough of you, you'll just absorb the shock and that ball will bounce right back at them!"
"But...sarge, they're firing incendiaries."
"...BUGGER."
Seriously, the AI just sat there like that for the whole battle. I obliged by taking the chance to level my mortars up a bit.

LOL I love it when the enemy army bunches up like that. This is when I order my howitzer's to open up with the flaming carcass shot. Does some major damage real fast. :laugh4:

I would have used my howitzers on them, but apparently the AI's demi cannons there are crewed by master snipers. They managed to knock out both guns and leave the crew totally unharmed.

Canons can use the quicklime shot better, but with mortars, you should really use the explosive shells. Anyway, quicklime looks more spectecular here :2thumbsup:

As Liberator said, I was using the quicklime shells for visual effect. Since (as you'll note) the mortars didn't fire in sequence, and the smoke from firing dissipates a lot more quickly than the quicklime trails.
Earlier in that battle I was dropping percussive shells all over the limeys in a fort. Very effective. Especially when they did their usual banzai charge.
Still, with THAT much horrible acidic fog pouring down around you, you'd figure they'd suffer more than three dead :annoyedg:

You also have to consider that those are "green" gun crews. If they had more experience I think you would have seen better results. I've had some experienced gun crews that made 40-60+ kills per battle.

If you get a "direct hit" with quicklime shot, it'll kill just as many men as percussive shot.

"Oh dear. Not only have we just been hit with a cavalry charge on our flank, but someone has turned off gravity. Help!!!"
These can also be found with several others from the Battle of Philadelphia in a Mead Hall AAR about my RTI Episode 3 campaign. Shameless plug, I know.

I've had more luck with the carcass shot than quicklike, really. It seems that with the fire you just have to hit guys with the smoke and it'll take out 10-20 of them.

A soldier confesses his love on the battlefield while in the foreground his fellow grenadier provides music for the occasion, possibly a tune by Whitesnake.
I think the fellow in the background there is being sick.

Oh, just noticed it today, LOL. Some 4 months after you asked.
1. Yes, Semen is a male name, but it has nothing to do with the similar sounding English word
2. An example that comes to mind right away is one of the great revolutionary generals: Семён Михайлович Будённый

Seige Weapons are always good for funny pics, but you think they would fix them when cannons were becoming an essential battlefield unit.
"Alright lads, We've only got one cannon to guard this ford so we've got to make this shot count." Unit proceeds to make the cannon into a bomb. However the rammer is having trouble packing all the gunpowder and decides to get a running start to help him ram it in.
