it usually comes up when you have a heroic victory or crushing defeat... it doesn't come always though
Oh, and the AI will get them as wel.
In Athens? You won't get one if you won a siege.
I was attacked by 2 armies and I got a heroic victory... it did not show. I was wondering why.
I remember the AI getting them too, so much that there were several in my Bactrian campaign in RTR. So far in EB, I have not seen one, hence my question.
AFAIK the simbol appears when a half stack or more for each armie fight outside a city. the result does not matter.
No, I've seen it pop up anywhere. It simply has to be a Heroic victory or a crushing defeat to pop up.
It has to be classified as Heroic Victory for one side. Also, it has to be outside a city. It will disappear after some time when it will be forgotten. The more involved, the longer it will last, normally 50 years.
About it disapearing I have have no idea, but since my heroic victories are rare and i have very many famous battle sites i dissagree, maybe an EBteam member could streighten this out
Those famous battle markers are part of the RTW.exe's hardcoding. They don't always make sense. Sometime a huge battle that is difficult but won against all odds won't get a marker but an easily won victory will get a marker.
The time the last seems odd too. Sometimes they'll seem permenant and sometimes they'll disappear after a decade. I think the time they last is tied to turns and not years so they disappear faster in EB than in RTW if you are counting years. The time they last does seem to be tied to the size of the battle, though.
Since it is part of the exe hardcoding, nobody can be for sure on the details.
Wow, I had no idea they disappear. Odd...
Has anyone else had their markers disappear??
Nope...but then, I suppose they could have happened to some and I didn't notice...them not being there anymore and all
Yes, I've had them disappear. Also, they do not have to be outside of a city.
How many markers do you have then inside a city?
All the minor battles disappear pretty fast. If you score a heroic victory with only very few soldiers involved, and you have already half a dozen markers of really big battles present, it won't appear at all.
Never mind. It's a bit tricky. It would be more correct to say that a marker can only appear when the battle was fought on a tile different from the city tile. For example
1. Mak army besieges Rome. Roman army A is approaching from behind and attacks the Mak army. Roman army B from inside the city comes to help, the Maks obtain a heroic victory (what else) - marker will be spawned because the battle will be fought on a tile outside the city of Rome.
2. Mak army besieges Rome. Roman army A is approaching from behind. Roman army B from inside Rome attacks the Mak army, Roman army A comes to help, the Maks obtain a heroic victory (again, what else) - no marker because the battle will be fought on the map of the city of Rome.
Oh right. I forgot to add, I am using alex.exe - does that make a difference?
We could always ask someone from CA or the RTW team.
I thought heroic victories only came up when your general (family member) had a good showing?
That's really interesting, I didn't know they disappeared; but it's good for RP.
Edit: At the post above ^, you can win Heroic Victories when you sustain really low casualties and kill many (read: almost all) of a large enemy, or soundly crush a numerically/tactically/equipped superior enemy.
In my Romani world conquering campaign I had several, next to a city but also on the open plain. So far only one did disappear, a decisive but easy victory near a lake, where I defeated the Aedui.
It's always nice to see whole tracks of heroic victory's, again and again seeing my greatest heroes live on to eternity!:laugh4:
Anyway, the easiest way is as Centurio describes it, besiege a city and then fight a defensive battle where you destroy the relieving army and the city garrison together.
Good luck!
So... aside from a good excuse to boast, do these sites have any actually advantages?
As in... morale bonus to the troops of the winning side, etc.?
That would be pretty interesting, but I don't think that is implemented in the slightest.
I have 2 heroics under pahlava against AS. (AI) KH has a heroic against Mak that after this battle mak started lose all of their cities only Pella was on the land but just relieved the siege. I did not check if there is any more in my campaign map. Plus, I am using alex.
Just had a new one with my pontos one, I think its that ridiculous that I should tell how it happened.
First on, I destroyed 30 units in a battle at the same time, destroying the KH in a great battle.
No famous battle (it also was a clear victory, not heroic).
But....
A brigand army was near my city, I walked my city garrison to the rebels and attacked.
Battle match-up
Pontos:
Khuveshavagan Shahvar (Pontos Early Bodyguard)
Pantodapoi (Hellenic Native Spearmen)
Pantodapoi (Hellenic Native Spearmen)
Gund I Palta (Eastern Skirmishers)
VS
Eleutheroi:
Aspet "something" (Armenian Medium Cavalry)
Pantodapoi (Hellenic Native Spearmen)
Pantodapoi (Hellenic Native Spearmen)
Pantodapoi (Hellenic Native Spearmen)
So I first charged the cavalry unit of the captain with one unit of pantodapoi and my general, captain flees, while skirmishers hold of one unit of enemy spearmen and my unit holds off the other two.
Then I charge two spearmen units in the back with my general and then kill the final group, I chase them down and end the battle.
HEROIC VICTORY!
The brave people of that day will be remembered with a marker, the battle that decided the course of history in anatolia....:clown:
(Yes I know how to get battle markers but I thougth this was kinda weird).
Yes please share! Oh the nostaligia:beam:

i can't find the name of the song, but the composer is Vlad Kuryluk and it is not included in RTR, but in Marcus Camillus music remix mod 1.1.
Is there a way to put the song in EB? I figured I could just replace the other song with this one under the same name but, the regular victory song and the heroic are the same. I guess It would change both, which I don't want.
What is that?
Heh, I need help with that too. I have been wanting to add some music to EB, performances of ancient/folk music and music from other mods as well. I would really appreciate if someone came to our aid here :sweatdrop::yes:.
I might even start a thread if I will not be able to get an answer here.
I think he is talking about the vanilla RTW credits song. It is called "Forever" and performed by Angela Van Dyc, wife of Jeff Van Dyck, the person behind RTW music(and MiNO too, unless I am mistaken).
I know that song and it is not... I posted above who the composer is. I was unable to find a way to hear it over the net, though.
this is the music mod with the song i was talking about http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=104992
it is just called 'Win' and it was made by the RTR team and Vlad Kuryluk
Third edit - i found a way to listen to it. I know it may sound a little over the top, but that IS the whole idea :laugh4: http://www.last.fm/music/Vlad+Kurylu...tory?autostart
Hey, I got a "Famous Battle" mark for a Close Victory near Pella in 205 BC.... well in my KH campaign against Makedon... I siege their Pella, when suddenly 2 makedonian stack springs out of and attack me.... notice that I was using Alex EB, and I built spartan agoge when available... so I get much Spartans
My Units:
Somatophylakes Strategou, x 1
Hippeis Xyxtophoroi x 2
Hippakontistai x 2
Akontistai x 2
Sphendonetai x 3
Spartiates Hoplitai x 10
Enemy units:
First Army (that one who attack me...)
Somatophylakes Strategou(mounted), x 1
Pezhetairoi x 4
Thraikioi Prodromoi x 3
Hetairoi Aspidophoroi x 1
Hetairoi x 1
Peltastai x 3
Second Army (filled up with trash units)
Hoplitai Haploi x 8
Akontistai x 4
Thraikioi Prodromoi x 2
Toxotai x 1
Hippakontistai x 3
Third Army (from Pella, they are still at full strength because I only siege them in one turn)
Somatophylakes Strategou(mounted), x 1
Pezhetairoi x 7
At first, I create two line of Spartans, with my bodyguards stand in the center, formed a one line, 4 men deep, put my slingers in front of them, and my xyxtophoroi in right flank... I place Hippakontistai far in left flank...
First, the attacking makedonian army sent their hetairoi aspidophoroi to skirmish my line... in my right flank, I know this was a tactical error (I suspect they would come from the left), and I charge them with one of my hippeis xyxtophoroi... and they fight for some time before their general charge my horsemen...... I sent the other xyxtophoroi, but I forgot to look that their pezhetairoi was closing in... and both xyxtophoroi routs, and massacred... And their general heroically (ugh), charge my right side spartans..... along with Hetairoi, and nearly all their cavalry.... My spartans resist them, and I sent 3 other spartans to help them... their Hetairoi Aspidophoroi Routs and their general fell.... and their cavalry was massacred....
But their Pezhetairoi, still stubbornly march into my right spartans... and sucessfully pin my Spartans down... while their Peltastai does surprisingly wonderful killing with their javelins and their swords... (If I don't know the ai stupidity in other section of this battle, I will suppose that the Generals was really sacrificing himself for the rest of their army!!!). The Second Army's cavalry then charge my right's back, and routing 2 of my Spartans in the Process. In the same time, my skirmishers was engaged the Third army line.... so they can't help... I sent my general, and two other Spartans to relieve this situation, but they simply capable to hold their upper hand, even as one of my spartans sucessfully stab them in their back, they simply don't rout!... both side was losing sooo manyyy soldiers..... and I decide to sent all the Spartans... while they sent all their hoplitai... It was a complete chaos in the right side...
While in the left, my skirmishers is running out of ammo, and (their skirmish mode is still on! thankfully) just running arround dodging (but luckily also exhausting, enemy pezhetairoi). And miracle (or in more explicit form, ai stupidity) comes... their general charge in the thickest of my spartan mobs.... If I use cheaper Hoplitai, It will become certain doom for me, but luckily, they are spartans... and He was owned!!! after that, their mobs break away (both side has lost their initial formations and fight as mobs with weapons).... They then charge their toxotai (hopeless eh?), Hippakontistai, and everything.... they sucessfully rout some of my Spartans!!! but my general survived the riot, and blow that damn useful horn... Tot tet tot teeet..... so my spartans back, and kick their enemy again. My enemy are finally routs and massacred....
After that, my heavily depleted, and exhausted spartans, reassemble their formations, and I order my Skirmishers to fall back behind them.... The enemy pezhetaroi then march towards my spartans in a line, but I simply run my spartans in their left flank, while let them killing my skirmishers, and I soon watch them routs away.....
I won a close victory, I kill 1325 men, but lost my entire Xyxtophoroi, and many spartans (alongside with most of my akontistai).... (total 952 men)... I capture Pella then, and got a site of Famous battle here...
If I had to decide, I'd make the following rules for sites of famous battles.
- One side at least has to bring in 2500 soldiers (one side, becaue the battle very likely would be remembered if 200 guys would beat 3000 enemies)
- The battle has to be a Heroic Victory for one side OR a close victory, in which both sides lost at least 85% of their soldiers.
- Extraordinarily many men fought in this battle (at least 10'000 men alltogether)
- Special case: If the faction leader of one side OR at least 3 FM of one side die in this battle, at least 2'000 men have fought on both sides together, it can be a clear victory or an avarage one, and still get a site of a famous battle - marker
- The markers never disappear, since even today we remember great battles of ancient times, why should they forget them.
- In a radius of 3 Coordinates around a site of a famous battle, the faction who once had won this famous battle will get a morale-bonus if fightig at or near the same spot where their ancestors had achieved a great victory.
Nah, at least 50% loss for the winning side would be enough imho.
That's almost unachievable and practically contradicts you first proposal of 200 against all odds...
I'd say the very tile is sufficient, plus you should get a huge morale malus if you were the loser! If you're Roman though, you should get a morale boost for having lost at this site.
i thought such matters were hardcoded, to begin with :inquisitive:
