An alternate Political Compass

While the Political Compass stickied is convinient, it also asks a lot of weird questions (Such as if you thought beating up your kids is a good decision). Which doesn't really have much to do with politics, in my opinion.

I just found this political compass which is, while much more simplified, its questions have more pertinence from a political point of view. After you take the test, besides giving your place in their political compass, it also gives you which system and ideology do you support, and this test got it spot on. It also lists the recent American presidents and recent American presidential candidates that match the most with your position in the political compass. Finally, it compares your score with everybody else who has taken the test, and tells you your position compared to the rest.

I resent the 'socialism'.

I thought several questions didn't really have an applicable answer. Which may account for the party : no match. In particular, I wished that instead of 'none of the above', there would've been the option 'all of the above'.

I love how the test came up with 'Jimmy Carter'. As a matter of fact, I am indeed that other person that together with his mum thought he was a great president.

I had never heard of David Cobb before. I googled him. He's the green party candidate. Meh. But then he hails from Texas, so he's okay with me.

Wow. I don't know about this. I don't consider myself a liberal, nor a conservative either, but definitely not a democrat. I know almost nothing about Lyndon Johnson. The 04 and 08 votes were indeed what I voted, but it was more because I hate(d) Bush and what he was doing to the US than liking the other candidates, and McCain was a bit too nutty for me.

I had a lot of problems with the test until I clicked the "show hints" button. Basically you should completely ignore the original option and go by the blue text. For example:

Although my before and after didn't change that much, I had a lot less "none of the above" answers.

I'm not a socialist of any sort. I am centrist-right. MoDem to be exact. I think I'd be pretty mainstream Democrat in the US, neither the looney left nor tempted much to occasionaly swing to the GOP, so I was surprised the test twice couldn't link me with a party (I presume the test is American).
Sarkozy, Obama and Barroso suit me just fine - all three are pretty right wing without any trace of
(hyphenated) socialism.

Bollox. I am indignant over being called a Republican. I wish not to be tainted with that party of ignorance, intolerance, religious zealotry, and like evils. This test has a clear American slant, not surprising either, but it does make it restrictive. I for instance, am a strong atheist, and no Republican can admit that and still advance his career.

Not to mention, 12% are more authoritarian? Doubleplusbad bollox. This is a better test, more complex and longer too:

Generally, the longer the quiz, the better. Especially if the questions are divided into three categories: how much power you think should be given to the government, what is your social stance, and what is your fiscal/purely political stance.

The big difference between political compass and this one, is that political compass actually puts me on the opposite of the Authoritarian scale (on the correct side).

I disagree, strongly. Conservative libertarians or libertarian conservatives (they are different, however slightly) see both ideologies as almost natural combinations or extensions of the other. Small government, the free market, free speech, and etcetera.

As with the other survey, this one sees things through the lens of US politics and without understanding that there are often several answers.

The 16th question for example, on the law; after some cogitation, I selected the "prevent the causes of crime" - which is clearly meant to be the far left answer. But whilst I believe we should do our best to remove the social conditions that often lead to crime (poor education, disenfranchisement, poverty) because it seems clear to me that if people have no stake in society, they have naught to lose in breaking society's laws for gain - I also believe that lawbreakers should be dealt with extremely harshly, with life sentences meaning life with hard labour, no release.

Most of the questions posed are therefore biased to fit one into a "pot" so to speak.

All good fun though. Time to go and oppress the workers (sorry, liberate the workers).

Eliminating the causes of crime is the far left answer, yes. By eliminating the sources, you don't get the crime. Then against, far left also would remove a lot of laws which are pretty stupid, so there would also be naturally less crime as well, and not people getting arrested for smoking a little pot.

It's a perfectly conservative aim, as well. Conservative policy may well seek to bring people out of poverty (for example) by providing opportunity for all to succeed on merit - whereas leftist policy would probably look to a state welfare approach with equality benchmarks.

Both left and right governments love to legislate, and there's plenty of leftist governments that have suffocating layers of laws - since the state considers itself responsible for almost the entire life governance of the citizen. The further left, the more laws. I would argue the true conservative believes in the rule of law and that those laws should be few, traditional and close to immutable so that everyone understands the framework by which society functions - and thus minimises the intervention of government.

Your pot example is more likely to be enacted by a libertarian government. Libertarian politics can be left or right in nature (as can authoritarian government).

awesome post BG, i was considering a response (unlikely with sunday night laziness), but said it better than i could of.

This test made me feel like a nutter. some of the questions are so multi faceted though. i probably got some hardcore results because of my answers about work and education (the best and the brightest, etc.) I just don't think all the answers are possible, like 50 percent of the time i agreed with 2 or even three answers.

Of course, as someone recently remarked in the Backroom, people do not actually wish to learn anything. They simply desire for their views to be re-affirmed, whether it is a political test or a news channel. "Why watch both sides for a balanced, unbiased understanding when my precious Fox News are so fair and balanced, and always satisfy me??"

Vast majority of the partisan people in the world are like it, and most adults, if they support a certain party that is, will do the same. Many of us, and maybe even me, will turn out that way too.

Apparently I was in the moderate conservative box on the graph (so called Capital Republicanism). I suppose that isn't too far off, although the more specific statements were off a bit.

My mother watches FOX and CNN and she reads the Wall Street Journal :inquisitive:. The woman just does not like John and never has. I didn't like Ron Paul either. I thought the test was fine until it tried to guess what president you voted for. The simple fact is that while the test was pretty good, political dilemmas are just not one black and white like some people think (including many young people like myself). Some questions were very ambiguious like the last question on law enforcement.

The manner in which you worded your previous post caused me to assume your mother was one of those staunch partisans. And to some degree, this may be true, as I do not consider it wise to stick to one single party for one's entirely life in a nation such as America, where politics tend to focus on individuals more than in an other nation - in most world states people vote stolidly by party, and so did the Americans some time ago. Not so much today, a time where roughly 20% staunch Republicans and staunch 20% Democrats battle for the 60% undecided (research this if you wish, the 20% on each side is a true fact).

I assume you are going by registered dems and reps. Many people are staunch supporters of either side but they do not register as such. However, your numbers are basically correct, the independents really decide every political election in the U.S.

"0% are more liberal" than me - I love it. I have no idea what it means, or how it can be true given the map, but I love it.

I also like the 0 for the balance between the collective and individual orientation of moral rules; it matches the 0 I got in another Org promoted test on a left/right economic dimension.

I think the test is rubbish. The questions were way too few, far too general, poorly worded and posed and finally it's very, very american, the "old one" is international. I've probably got some other faults with it too, but I can't be bothered now...

On to my results then. First off, the test told me I'm authoritarian. Seeing as I'm a full-blown anarchist on social issues, I haven't got a clue how it sorted that one out. My system is "socialism", ok. Social democrat would also have been acceptable.. But my ideology is "international socialism" and "international communism"... Could anyone tell me just what that means? I can't see how it could mean anything but international revolutionary marxism(ie. Trotsky and Che), and that's just plain wrong... Not to mention that I can't say I saw the question "Do you believe that the revolution should be spread to the rest of the world?" in the test, or indeed anything about revolution at all... Just how can the test have communism as a result when none of the questions are about revolutions?

Oh, and I'm the most hard-ass wannabe despot on facebook. Take that!

Surprisingly centrist. I have no particularily strong feelings towards authoritarianism, but I thought I'd be more socialist.

It's surprising to see how this moral compass positions me as an Authoritarian + Left; whereas the political one considers me Libertarian + Left: quite close to the Dalai Lama in fact.

Although my opinion on the moral compass is that it is far too small a sample of political views, and the questions themselves are somewhat ‘meh’ or seem leg-ups to other political issues (e.g. people should be allowed to defend themselves sound suspiciously much like people should be allowed to bear arms). There should be plenty of questions and the questions should expose various kinds of bias (somebody consistently dis-agreeing with certain ‘authoritarian’ statements is not decidedly anarchist per se).
