This got me thinking. Every generation has "there" band. What's ours? I'm talking about a band that reaches everyone.

Well, I view the diversity as a positive. Mainly because I'd be pretty pissed if "our generations band" was some indie band. Or bright eyes. And I like having different genre's that are all going strong.
We probably don't have "a band" because it's so much easier for a band to get heard these days.

I don't mind their music, but yeah, I'd much rather have had my teen years in the early 90's listening to Pearl Jam or the other Seattle bands. Even better the 80's! All my favorite music comes from there. :2thumbsup:
It's also possible that the music scene isn't any different than it used to be, and that we have "a band" as much as they did back in the day. Maybe in 30 years people will look back at the 2000's and say: "We don't have a voice of our generation like they did with Miley Cyrus". Who knows (maybe someone older).

There is no band for "this" generation, at the moment. Sure, there's fads like Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, but they will come and go like the autumn breeze, only to be forgotten in the chills of winter and diverse music fora from which to choose now. The closest anything gets right now would probably be Jay-Z. However, I think he's sorta disqualified anyways, since he's not really a band. Plus, he still isn't really all that close to "generation defining" in the sense that, say, the Beatles were.
Basically, relish this time as a point in which everyone has a broad choice of music interests to pursuit. Not all are great, not all are even decent. But its all about taste, of course. The aforementioned statement is just my opinion, and others may disagree. Overall, I think most people are finding music they agree with, be it hard rock, indie, rap, or whatever tickles their fancy.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I think there's no 'band of our generation'. I can't think of any recent band that would fit the definition. Popular bands, such as Linkin Park, Foo Fighters and Muse aren't as mainstream as Nirvana or The Beattles were. And bands that are widely regarded as pretty good (such as NIN, Tool and so on) are even less mainstream. I'd go as far as saying that Hip hop and rap are nowadays much more listened to than rock. And there's no rap band/singer of our generation either. Snoop Dog is too old, 50 cents is dead (and too old).
Linkin Park? Real song-writers are crying right now.
Green Day? Fake punk... um... yeh... fake, pop-punk.
Edit: This is really quite difficult. You could say Chili Peppers or Incubus? Uh...
i like incubus, but green day/linkin park is better IMHO.
Red Hot Chili Peppers I'd vote for. a bit of everything, and nobody hates them.
I notice that a lot of the 70's era folk seem eager to label the Jonas Brothers as the voice of my generation... sounds a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.
Anyhow, I really don't give a damn what the voice if "my generation" is, because it's not mine. When I look back at this time in my life, this is what I'll remember. And for that matter, I wouldn't really like to be associated with ANY "voice of a generation," be it the Beatles, the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, Nirvana or the Jonas Brothers. Jerry Lee Lewis would be pretty damn cool (although Elvis the Pelvis kinda stole his rightful title from him) and AC/DC would be all right, but still, having just one band to define me by default kinda sucks.

I don't think there is a "band" of our Generation, and there needn't be one. I'm fairly sure there has only ever been two bands that have ever represented the feelings of an entire generation which would be the -Beatles- And Elvis I'm not even that much of a fan of either, but I know how influential they were, and still are. Most generations instead had "styles" of music that became popular, and uniquely different from the previous. The 20's had Jazz, the 40's had Big Band, the 50s had Elvis, the 60s had the Beatles, the 70s had Rock, the 80s had Metal and the birth of both rap and pop, the 90s had Metal/Rap/Pop as separate identities, and 2000s haven't been without success either, but it's been a bit more of a quiet revolution, and thats been the infusion of many different genres. I'm curious how the musical will differ in the 10s.
