The Band of our Generation
This got me thinking. Every generation has "there" band. What's ours? I'm talking about a band that reaches everyone.
I nominate the foo fighters

P.S: I'm talking like 16-24 years old. NO OLD PEOPLE

few generations can have a "band."
maybe a "genre."
this generations genre would be rap anyways, not rock.
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
Definately not the Foo Fighters anyway.
Why would it be rap Hooah?

I could say Nirvana, but apparently...

Agreed.
Today's music is okay, but pales in comparison to those of eras past. Too diverse. No bands that reach out and affect everybody.
I'll still take Floyd any day of the week.
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
Well, I view the diversity as a positive. Mainly because I'd be pretty pissed if "our generations band" was some indie band. Or bright eyes. And I like having different genre's that are all going strong.
We probably don't have "a band" because it's so much easier for a band to get heard these days.
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
Nickelback? :shame:
I don't mind their music, but yeah, I'd much rather have had my teen years in the early 90's listening to Pearl Jam or the other Seattle bands. Even better the 80's! All my favorite music comes from there. :2thumbsup:
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
It's also possible that the music scene isn't any different than it used to be, and that we have "a band" as much as they did back in the day. Maybe in 30 years people will look back at the 2000's and say: "We don't have a voice of our generation like they did with Miley Cyrus". Who knows (maybe someone older).

<3 Andres, +1 for Nirvana.
These little fartknockers have no idea what good music is these days.

Re: The Band of our Generation
Nirvana is for those who were grown enough to be able to listen them by the 90's. That counts "old people" out as obvious.
I'm trying my best to think as even-handed as possible on this and I have to say Linkin Park is the closest.

So, therefore, everyone does? :inquisitive: Like 75% of my friends growing up listened to Country, that doesn't mean everyone does.

Three6 used be to underground horrorcore, but (somewhat sadly) they're more mainstream now.

I doubt this is a thread intended to discuss about preferences Meneldil-kün.
(fyi, Linkin Park is not really a part of my personal preference.)

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. What the heck does underground horrorcore even mean? How many other groups classify themselves as this?
Good God, I'm 19 and I'm already sounding like a curmudgeon. :dizzy2:

Horrorcore. I don't go in for the really dark, slow, and gritty aspects of it. Lump in a bit of a mainstream sound to make it fast and dance-able.

Re: The Band of our Generation
I just made the cut for not being old... which is scary...
I like the Nirvana answer but I think we are talking more 20-30 or a bit older group for that...
Are we just talking pure success... Spice Girls and Britney Spears sold loads in a short space of time or does longevity come into it ? Cliff Richard, Metallica (though they changed one or two members right ?) though i guess were not counting longevity to much seen as 16-24
Linkin Park is a pretty widely popular one... Eminem possibly...

I'm old too! I'm 14 and I'm not in the age group arrgghh!!!!
haha lol
anyway: unfortunately, todays popular music is almost all rap, which isnt even really music to tell you the truth. and since there is really no 1 band that everyone likes (that is newer) there is no right answer.
but its not like there has ever been a single band that everyone likes above all else; KISS and AC/DC were formed around the same time, and they were both awesome. theres no 1 band above all else.

Re: The Band of our Generation
The Little River Band. If it has to be a band.
If there was ever a song that united a country, this is it. It was just...true.

Re: The Band of our Generation
Ehh....
There is no band for "this" generation, at the moment. Sure, there's fads like Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, but they will come and go like the autumn breeze, only to be forgotten in the chills of winter and diverse music fora from which to choose now. The closest anything gets right now would probably be Jay-Z. However, I think he's sorta disqualified anyways, since he's not really a band. Plus, he still isn't really all that close to "generation defining" in the sense that, say, the Beatles were.
Basically, relish this time as a point in which everyone has a broad choice of music interests to pursuit. Not all are great, not all are even decent. But its all about taste, of course. The aforementioned statement is just my opinion, and others may disagree. Overall, I think most people are finding music they agree with, be it hard rock, indie, rap, or whatever tickles their fancy.

I can't take them seriously. I was doing some cabling work (installing data outlets for computers for those who dont know) and one of their songs came on like 8 times an hour.

Joking aside (and i sincerely hope you were joking) unfortunately disney controls the minds of every child under the age of 12, and every female under the age of 24. So you see it's not truly talent, it's just that they can make it sound like good music. While you're next to your 10 year old son hearing "The Best of Both Worlds", he's hearing "Detroit Rock City" (Which I can finally drum on medium 100% on Rock Band 2!!!). Thus you can see the allure.
So by this logic, KISS is the band of our generation. Despite being 30 years old.

Re: The Band of our Generation
Number one songs on the hot 100 for last two years (with multiple weeks).

Re: The Band of our Generation
i will repeatedly veto flo rida and lady gaga out of that position. never really heard the black eyed peas, so i cant judge.

Name a band more prolific and more influential in this generation than Green Day. Have you heard 21st Century Breakdown? It's monumental. They manage to be exceedingly popular and have the same arena-packing qualities as many bands of old.
Honorable mention:
Foo Fighters
The White Stripes
The Strokes
Blink-182
Rage Against the Machine

I would comment on the so called "voice of our generation" (Which does include me), but I'm to busy listening to the greatness that was the mid-late 60s/early 70s psychedelic and folk music to really care about the crap they're putting out these days.

i love both. but saying green day is the band of our generation is a bit far.

Obviously. It just that the mere idea that Linkin Park might be representative of my generation is saddening.
I don't like Nirvana that much, but I can see how they became the band of a generation. Linkin Park though? That's a whole new level of terribad.
Furthermore, they don't embody one style, like Nirvana embodied grunge. What is Linkin Park? Softcore-pop-rock-cheap-ass-rap-metal? 6 years ago, a whole lot of teenagers dressed like Kurt Cobain, thought 'Life is bad, I want to die'. Who would dress like Chester Bennington?
Unfortunately, or fortunately, I think there's no 'band of our generation'. I can't think of any recent band that would fit the definition. Popular bands, such as Linkin Park, Foo Fighters and Muse aren't as mainstream as Nirvana or The Beattles were. And bands that are widely regarded as pretty good (such as NIN, Tool and so on) are even less mainstream. I'd go as far as saying that Hip hop and rap are nowadays much more listened to than rock. And there's no rap band/singer of our generation either. Snoop Dog is too old, 50 cents is dead (and too old).
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
Linkin Park? Real song-writers are crying right now.
Green Day? Fake punk... um... yeh... fake, pop-punk.
Edit: This is really quite difficult. You could say Chili Peppers or Incubus? Uh...
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
i like incubus, but green day/linkin park is better IMHO.
Red Hot Chili Peppers I'd vote for. a bit of everything, and nobody hates them.
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
I notice that a lot of the 70's era folk seem eager to label the Jonas Brothers as the voice of my generation... sounds a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.
Anyhow, I really don't give a damn what the voice if "my generation" is, because it's not mine. When I look back at this time in my life, this is what I'll remember. And for that matter, I wouldn't really like to be associated with ANY "voice of a generation," be it the Beatles, the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, Nirvana or the Jonas Brothers. Jerry Lee Lewis would be pretty damn cool (although Elvis the Pelvis kinda stole his rightful title from him) and AC/DC would be all right, but still, having just one band to define me by default kinda sucks.
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
that sounds good.
honestly when i look back at this time in my life ill remember it as the time when:
"I dressed up as Gene Simmons for halloween and listened to music from the 70's-80's"
I'm a little different from most 14/15 year olds you'll see :P
-
Re: The Band of our Generation
Not as much as you think.
The Jonas Brothers thing dies out a year or two older than you.
Then girls become nice, with the bits, come closer, look at the bits, still smelling nice, bits just for you and they're still smelling nice, come closer then they :daisy: RIP YOU IN HALF.

Re: The Band of our Generation
I don't think there is a "band" of our Generation, and there needn't be one. I'm fairly sure there has only ever been two bands that have ever represented the feelings of an entire generation which would be the -Beatles- And Elvis I'm not even that much of a fan of either, but I know how influential they were, and still are. Most generations instead had "styles" of music that became popular, and uniquely different from the previous. The 20's had Jazz, the 40's had Big Band, the 50s had Elvis, the 60s had the Beatles, the 70s had Rock, the 80s had Metal and the birth of both rap and pop, the 90s had Metal/Rap/Pop as separate identities, and 2000s haven't been without success either, but it's been a bit more of a quiet revolution, and thats been the infusion of many different genres. I'm curious how the musical will differ in the 10s.
