Default The Band of our Generation

This got me thinking. Every generation has "there" band. What's ours? I'm talking about a band that reaches everyone.

    I nominate the foo fighters

P.S: I'm talking like 16-24 years old. NO OLD PEOPLE
There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

    and that too.
few generations can have a "band."
    maybe a "genre."
this generations genre would be rap anyways, not rock.

Definately not the Foo Fighters anyway.

Why would it be rap Hooah?

    Agreed.

Today's music is okay, but pales in comparison to those of eras past. Too diverse. No bands that reach out and affect everybody.

I'll still take Floyd any day of the week.

Well, I view the diversity as a positive. Mainly because I'd be pretty pissed if "our generations band" was some indie band. Or bright eyes. And I like having different genre's that are all going strong.

We probably don't have "a band" because it's so much easier for a band to get heard these days.

    Nickelback?

I don't mind their music, but yeah, I'd much rather have had my teen years in the early 90's listening to Pearl Jam or the other Seattle bands. Even better the 80's! All my favorite music comes from there.

It's also possible that the music scene isn't any different than it used to be, and that we have "a band" as much as they did back in the day. Maybe in 30 years people will look back at the 2000's and say: "We don't have a voice of our generation like they did with Miley Cyrus". Who knows (maybe someone older).

Nirvana is for those who were grown enough to be able to listen them by the 90's. That counts "old people" out as obvious.

I'm trying my best to think as even-handed as possible on this and I have to say Linkin Park is the closest.

    haha lol

anyway: unfortunately, todays popular music is almost all rap, which isnt even really music to tell you the truth. and since there is really no 1 band that everyone likes (that is newer) there is no right answer.

but its not like there has ever been a single band that everyone likes above all else; KISS and AC/DC were formed around the same time, and they were both awesome. theres no 1 band above all else.

The Little River Band. If it has to be a band.

If there was ever a song that united a country, this is it. It was just...true.

I agree, and it's still relevant today, but unfortunately simply being alive at the time makes one too old for this particular discussion.

    Ehh....

There is no band for "this" generation, at the moment. Sure, there's fads like Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, but they will come and go like the autumn breeze, only to be forgotten in the chills of winter and diverse music fora from which to choose now. The closest anything gets right now would probably be Jay-Z. However, I think he's sorta disqualified anyways, since he's not really a band. Plus, he still isn't really all that close to "generation defining" in the sense that, say, the Beatles were.

Basically, relish this time as a point in which everyone has a broad choice of music interests to pursuit. Not all are great, not all are even decent. But its all about taste, of course. The aforementioned statement is just my opinion, and others may disagree. Overall, I think most people are finding music they agree with, be it hard rock, indie, rap, or whatever tickles their fancy.

Joking aside (and i sincerely hope you were joking) unfortunately disney controls the minds of every child under the age of 12, and every female under the age of 24. So you see it's not truly talent, it's just that they can make it sound like good music. While you're next to your 10 year old son hearing "The Best of Both Worlds", he's hearing "Detroit Rock City" (Which I can finally drum on medium 100% on Rock Band 2!!!). Thus you can see the allure.

So by this logic, KISS is the band of our generation. Despite being 30 years old.

I just made the cut for not being old... which is scary...

I like the Nirvana answer but I think we are talking more 20-30 or a bit older group for that...

Are we just talking pure success... Spice Girls and Britney Spears sold loads in a short space of time or does longevity come into it ? Cliff Richard, Metallica (though they changed one or two members right ?) though i guess were not counting longevity to much seen as 16-24

Linkin Park is a pretty widely popular one... Eminem possibly...
