Current title of the game: World War One: Clash of Empires
Possible starting date: 28th June
Playable factions: United Kingdom, France, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottomans, Italy, United States
Period: From the start of 1914 to the end of 1919 ( 4 turns per year = 24 turns )
Theaters of War: Europe, North-America/Atlantic, German East-Africa
Campaign Map: Hex-based map
Co-Hosts: johnhughthom, woad&fangs
More about the game:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The game is similar to "The Thirty Years War" that I hosted few months ago. Players have the chance to re-battle WWI.
With the new features (tech tree, NPC's, improved economy etc.) and co-hosts I hope this game will better.
There are few blogs about the game but I'll transfer all the information about the game into this thread.
One thing I would like to remind all those who are interested that in this game you don't have to run a country on your own.
Three people(or perhaps more) per faction would be the best solution since that way there will always be someone who could substitute the leader(player who receives my previous turn reports) and send the orders in time.
Also, with co-hosts I hope there wouldn't be any long time pauses between write-ups like there were in TYW.
Transport zones are marked on the map but railways or "minor" cities are not(yet).
The Sign ups are open!

Will the players controlling Russia automatically lose in the first turn (January-March?) of 1918? Will the United States be unable to participate until the second turn (April-June?) of 1917?
Or are you playing this as an alternate history, whereby the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (and perhaps the Communist Revolution that preceded it) might not happen, for example?

My plan was to start this in May. So, this means first years of the game will be played during the summer.

It's more like alternate history. Historical events might happen if conditions are close enough but I'm not going to force them on players.
It's the players who take decisions and probably rewrite the history.. at least in this game.
So, Russia will not lose in 1918 and US could join the war before 1917.

Will there be playable minor factions if you get more sign-ups than intended? If the war goes differently, different nations might come into play.
For instance, perhaps the Zimmermann telegram is never intercepted, and Mexico launches a surprise attack on the U.S. Or, Spain decides to get involved in the war. Or maybe the U.S. joins the Central Powers instead and decides to take Canada.

It was intercepted by the British, though, and they publicized it, causing the U.S. to be royally pissed at Germany. It certainly didn't help the Central Powers' chances as they had hoped.

Minor factions will not be available but major factions can influence minor factions to join their alliance.
So, Spain joining the war or US joining the Central powers is quite possible.
About the sign-ups..
I always thought that having at least 3 players per faction would be perfect.
This way you could RP internal politics of a country as well. ~:)

Re: The 'World War One' game - pregame discussion, questions&answers etc.
Those light blue spots on sea are STZ's(Sea transport zone).
It's possible to move from European map to American using those 3 western most STZ's.
STZ near Portugal allows to move to African theatre.
STZ near Alexandria/Egypt allows moving to the STZ in Red Sea.
Those 4 gray hexes in Egypt is LTZ(Land Transport Zones) and it connects East Africa with Europe.
There are capitals as well.
Suggestions?

Re: The 'World War One' game - pregame discussion, questions&answers etc.
I think Spain and Portugal should be countries. That's just a massive blob of land just asking France to be gobbled up.
Also what are the STZs at the Baleares, England/France, between England and Denmark, Malta, Aegean, north Russia, Gotland Persian Gulf, Crimea, island north of England, and the one north of Norway for?
And does the one near Portugal allow movement into NA and African theaters?
And since my understanding of the history of Europe is sketchy at best from Napoleon to WWII, why does England have Malta, Egypt, and Cyprus?
edit: Since Russia is so fecking huge, even bigger than the Ottomans in 30YW, is there some way to counter them having a bajillion gold turn 2 onwards? Like a "remote/backwater hex" penalty (meaning non-coastal non-Nile Africa, Arabia Ottomans don't have, Russian Hinterland, Scandinavia)

1. Unless France wants Spain and Portugal to join Central Powers I advise not to attack them. They are more worth by influencing them to join your side. Country with whom they have the best relationship(NPC and player led country must also be in the same alliance) will be able to control their military.
2. STZ's allow faster traveling to your ships.
So, if Ottomans want to move their fleet from Istanbul to Brest then their orders must be:
(Ottoman fleet starting position is Istanbul STZ B1(upper hex in the center row))
Malta B1 > Baleares A1 > Gibraltar A2 > Brest B2
3. Yes. It allows to move to American and African theaters. So, guard it well. ~;)
4. Since British owned them when the war started?
5. You don't receive tax money from hexes rather from upgrading your infrastructure. So, the amount of hexes means nothing. Having large territory without railroads or cities(there will be more of them not just capitals) makes it harder to reinforce/supply your armies.

I would assume this zone is meant to represent Gibraltar and it's likely a means for British access to the Med. It'll be interesting to see how the British and French players prevent the Germans and such from utilising those Atlantic STZs. :3

Why would Russia have alot of money? Their economy was mainly agricultural in comparison to the industrialised and increasingly wealthy Germans and Brits. They were decades behind until the Stalin era, really.

Since this is an alternative reality then Russian players can make wonders with Russia if they don't make the same mistakes as Russians did in WWI. I think another Battle of Tannenberg will not happen in this game.

Because in the previous game in this style, Thirty Years War (Oh God what a game; VIVA LA FRANCE), Russia was absolutely minted, as all Hexes gave the same amount of income.

In 30YW, each hex gave 200 money per turn, so even though the Ottomans in real life were piss poor... poor, I had passed the million mark before anyone else. Or was it 100,000? Anyway, I had a lot of money, when I really shouldn't had.

There are several reasons.
First, because the previous game of this type(Thirty Years War) was in Gameroom.
Second, being in Gameroom helps to advertise the game a bit more.
Third, I checked Chapter House and this game looks different than the games played there.

Sorry for my ignorance but your game simply has a sophisticated military system (that would be adapted to the trench war). I can't see much of a difference. It is also based on history...
Concert of Europe is a quite different beast from the WW1. The diplomacy there is essential, whilst in the WW1 the dimplomatic maneuvres had little place (at least historically). Black and white game: you are either enemy or friend; compromise between the blocks was impossible even when the damages were bigger than the gains... It was basically the failure of the whole model.

Well, though you are mostly right about that black and white game thing there were exceptions(Netherlands comes to my mind).
Also, this game allows ahistorical moves such as Germany and France signing peace separately or Ottomans turning against other Central Powers etc. There will be consequences of course(drop in relations between NPC and player country etc) for such actions.

The only aesthetic change I would suggest is changing France to a dark blue, and perhaps swapping the Austrian and German colors- otherwise it looks all good to me- British Red, Russian Green, and Ottomans can be any hue of red/green really.

France is already dark blue in the new map.

I think Russia should be light blue, and Ottomans should get Russia's color.

I re-did the European map all over when I discovered a site where I can make my own hex-based maps much easier. Also, I think it looks a lot better as well!
What do you think?
Re: The 'World War One' game - pregame discussion, questions&answers etc.
No doubt the new map looks better. Great work, Ibn! :2thumbsup:
Also, if I may make a suggestion, it might be a good idea to distinguish territory conquered from territory owned with colored, slanted lines- a la EU3.

Since these places were unimportant during WWI. I doubt they will be ever conquered and the map looks a bit better without this huge N-African part.

I already had something similar in my mind.

All of them. Like I have said before you can bring your friends and run the country together. Having about 3 people per nation is near perfect.
I quote TM who expressed my idea very well:

At least that's how I'd organize it :shifty:

I'd have to see how much work running one country would require. Would it be similar to TYW?

In TYW there was no economy but in here you have resources that you need to buid up your army or infrastructure. Also, colonial part was missing from the TYW.

Bulgaria will be NPC. However, if you get them(Bulgaria) to join the war on your side then I will think about it.
The available countries for the players are UK, USA, France, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Italy.

Well, Ottomans didn't have any colonies (I guess you could maybe count the Crimea and N Africa, but not anymore), and the economy is already down the drain, so I probably could handle it by myself... if anyone wants to help, though, you're welcome to try.
So Ibn, when are we going to get a gander and the rest of your glorious map?

I'm interested most in playing as Italy, but I could go for any other country if necessary.

Since I'll be working during the Saturdays in May(except this one) then I have to move the starting date to the beginning of June. I don't want to start this game while I don't have enough time for it. I apologize for any inconveniences this might cause to possible players.

Dang, I really wanted to play this soon.
How else would I spend all my time on the Internet when no one else is on?
