Given that this is a generalization of all TW games it fits in the frontroom I guess.
Do you as a rule prefer to play TW games modded or unmodded? I actually have to mod all mine fairly constantly just so I don't get bored with them. When I download mods I also get bored of them pretty quick, I don't know why I just like to be control of the changes in the game.
The way TW developers wanted the game or the way you want it? :balloon2:
I usually played the game a few times as it was before I needed to tinker with it, I'd continue with that until someone comes out with an excellent mod to well beyond the capabilities of my tinkering and then stick with that before the next game.
Play it for a while as released by dev, then apply some sort of total overhaul to the thing to keep it alive.

I generally play the original game, or a total conversion. Both are pretty compatible since the scenarios are quite different. Having said that, I haven't played TW in a looong time.
I generally try them as-is, then start slowly modding them later.
I'm nervous about mods and CTD and conflicts and the like, so I usually only go for mods that seem really interesting.
minor tweaker here. all personal nothing major like region changees or anything just things to affect how the ai plays and like unit recruitment (creatan archers recruitable, archers to carthage, etc.
Avoid playing it entirely. :3

I've heard alot of negativity about the Total War series, principally from these forums. What is it I've seen them called... Cash Cow: Total War? I have EB installed...fun and I like the depth but I am terrible at it. A bunch of broke Romans waiting sheepishly for those crazy 'naked dudes' to end their misery. Perhaps I should brush up on some RTW first? I have a BA in History...class of 98'. I may seem quite well-versed and articulate, but my 2.0 GPA doesn't necessarially reflect that...
It's not just you, Nerd; getting the cash flow right in EB is the first and hardest challenge.
I've just never been any good at making money in RTW and M2TW. In EB things are expensive and take a long time to build. Government structures have me alittle perplexed too at the moment...
Not necesserily TW (which I havent played for years now..) but any moddable game in which I become very interested - I try to make it as enjoyable for myself as I can. Using major mods as a base, then redo most things in the way I want them to be, then play.. Of course you need to finish vanilla few times first.
I dont like just changing mods to refresh experience...

The reason you hear a lot of negative comments here is because most of the patrons have very high expectations of the totalwar series (myself included) due to it's revolutionary nature when it first appeared. Rome was fun, even if it wasn't perfect.

I'm trying (and liking) COW (call of warhammer for medieval 2) and BoA (battles of asia with japanese map for rome) at the moment.
I reckon broken crescent is the best mod I've ever played.

I voted "Gah". I preferred Shogun unmodded or MTW with the Samurai Wars mod. Haven't played the newer TW games, except Rome and Medieval2 once or twice and they were pure crap.

The upkeep costs as a whole are just mad, I find it runs pretty slow for me which is never good, my computer has seen better days.
My experience has been varied. I played -- and still play -- Shogun completely vanilla. Of course, STW was also probably the least moddable title out of the whole series (ironically enough), so that's probably the main reason why.
I played MTW/VI (which remains my favorite) with just the vanilla version for a long time. I then started getting into the mods about -- 4, maybe 5 years ago? -- having primarily played XL, Asai Nagamasa's Pocket Mod, Samurai Warlords, and a bit of both HTW and Redux. (I've still gotta get around to playing OmarPacha's Hyborian mod, although I do have it installed.) Now, I can barely imagine playing MTW unmodded, although I definitely don't regret the time I've spent doing so.
I can't really comment on the other games. I was utterly disgusted by my experience with Rome (gave up on it after just a couple months), and subsequently wasn't much interested in Medieval 2 (since it was based on the same engine). Similarly, I haven't been able to bring myself to play Empire that much -- at least until a patch/update comes out that fixes/improves the strategic AI to the point where factions are no longer insane/suicidal -- and so haven't had the desire to try any of the mods for it. In regards to both RTW and ETW, I see little point in trying mods if the underlying core game is broken.
You can thank an old (and by now, rather legendary) Orgah named Vanya for that. I don't know if he was the one who first actually coined "Gah!", but he's certainly the one most responsible for having caused it to become widespread. :beam:Quote:

Heck, I hated vanilla Rome, and even after playing it I could barely go back to MI.
Edit: Not to rag on Medieval I. It was the first one I played in the series, and I loved it, I just prefer the newer engines a lot.
Why are a lot of you hate Vanilla Rome? Without them, there will be no EB forever.....
And yes, the best things come with Vanilla Rome are Fire and Forget missiles on four legs.... known as dogs...
Vanilla rome was always so predictable...
The Seleucid's are always bested, egypt & rome always steamroll, gaul and greek factions always eventually die out...
Which is why I mod the game to create variety whilst keeping the vanilla-ness mostly in tact. :grin:

The vanilla play of Shogun was very very good (also not many mods for that game for obvious reasons) and there was something about the vanilla feel about Rome that I loved, even more than the EB feel (UIs and such) although EB improved on about just every area, the gameplay was at times a bit too realistic (so expensive to and time consuming to build grand things and armies - gotta love the cheats :beam:).
