This is an experimental mafia game sign-up.

There will be two factions, town and mafia.
There will be no recruitment, forced or otherwise.
There will be no unusual role PMs, such as jesters. If you get a power role, it will be fairly normal stuff.
Your win conditions will be known, normal, and straightforward.

The gimmick here will be....

Representative Democracy!!!

It's a really, really bad idea. But I'm going to go with it anyway if I get enough people. Ideally we should get about 20 people or more, otherwise the concept doesn't really work.

The players will be randomized into an odd number of districts.
Each district will elect a representative, and only that representative will actually vote in a manner that matters when it comes to the lynch.
The rule for districts is that the largest-sized district cannot have two or more people more than the smallest-sized district, so all districts will be of the same approximate size, off by a maximum of 1 person.
As people die off, the districts may need to be re-drawn.
At game start, there will be a special election for "Chancellor-for-life".
Only the Chancellor can re-draw districts.
If the Chancellor dies, a special election for the new Chancellor will happen.
Whenever the size difference between districts becomes 2 or more, the Chancellor will decide who goes in what district.
Districts have a minimum size of 3 people.
Districts can be as large as you like, but there must always be 3 or more districts, and there must always be an odd-number of districts.
District voting ends when there are 8 players or fewer, because at that point, there would be either one district, or an even number of districts, or districts would end up with 2 people or 1 person.
If the voters in a district tie, they will not have a representative that round.
If the district representatives' lynch vote ends in a tie, the Chancellor decides between the tied candidates, and someone will be lynched anyway.

Why the gimmick? Because it gives the mafia opportunities to become Chancellor and create unrepresentative results, possibly. Or maybe to give a decent scum hunter a chance to lynch scums without needing consensus. Who knows? I'm evil and I want to prove how amazing representative democracy is for the average voter.

There will be a need for more discussion and a need for more voting time than 24 hours with this setup. I think you'll find on a round where you need to elect a new dictator Chancellor, some folks will be wishing for 3 day day phases. But we gotta keep it to 3 day day-night cycles or faster to keep things moving.

Can say the game I played here was lower volume than both DM and the Pizza game we both played on CivFan, but higher than Scooby Doo...

VERY USEFUL INFO:

Game will include players from USA, Europe, and Australia. To accommodate this, I am tentatively choosing to end Day Phases and Night Phases at 8:30 pm my time. This will allow our Aussie players to sometimes see end of days at 630am their time, it will allow me to end phases not in the middle of my night time, and it will allow USA people to have end of day around noon-afternoon depending on where they are. Days will be 48 hours, so regardless of phase end, you should be able to lodge a vote for Chancellor and a vote for the lynch at least once per day.

Posting minimums: You will be required to post twice per day, and vote at least once per day. If you fail to meet that minimum, it's entirely possible bad things will happen to you, without going into detail.

All of these rules / FAQ things will be assembled into a single post at the start of the game thread when I am ready, so don't worry about missing them here.

Just read the Game start host posts and you should be OK.

Also responded to dice via IM, but the past few games on here are a good indicator. Most players won't crack 50 posts all game long, and the ones that do typically range from 50-200 ish for a several week game.

Well, that is an interesting question, when the game starts. Hmm.

It occurs to me that the holidays are a week from now. And it's very likely the game would have to be on pause for a couple of them, with the thread locked and such. I kind of don't like that interruption, and would rather avoid it, but I guess since the quality of the game will be impacted unless the players themselves can play the game, I'll open up the question of when it starts. I have 19 people, 2 more would make for an excellent minimum.

These are the options:

1) Open the game at 21 people, anyone else who wanders by can be a reserve player, open it ASAP. Leave the thread open and simply give people an extra day after Christmas or after New Years regardless what phase it is. (Extra 2 days schedule)

2) Open the game Monday the 19th, with enough time to play the first 2 Day Phases. Wait a few days with the thread locked, re-open the game on the 27th, play Day 3, lock the thread again for New Years and have a longer night, then resume a normal schedule after that ("Interrupting Cow" sched-moo-le)

3) Don't open the game until 26th Dec. (Don't open the game until X-mas schedule)

4) Don't open the game until 2nd Jan. (New year, new game schedule)


I don't like option 4 as some of you will probably get high and wander off in the meantime. But let me know which of these don't work for you people. What do I mean, you people? I mean, you people:

Hey, I'm the 20th-of-December guy Dp101 mentioned. Can't commit to playing before then, but if the game's still open by that time I'm in.

This is fine. Sooh is my wife, and we're in the same house. Ground rules for something like that, just in case someone does accidentally get spoiled (it can happen):

1) Stop posting in the game or in any related quicktopics, etc.
2) As soon as humanly possible, PM me explaining what happened. I will replace or modkill whichever slots I need to, with no hard feelings.
3) Don't use the same computer, stuff can pop up in the search bar if you type something innocuous. Happened in a game I hosted on GITP, brothers sharing a computer accidentally saw the other's qt.
4) Please avoid clearing/condemning one another for reasons you can't explain publicly. Mainly because they can be very wrong. One time I was in a turbo with someone and they heard me typing a lot in the other room during night phase. But I was vanilla town, taking notes and trying to jot down all the fake peeks. Sounded a lot like I was in a mafia chat though. If you stick to in-game evidence, you will always feel better about it, right or wrong. Plus others playing with you can follow your reasoning.

Also @ everyone:

• Make sure you guys all have read the OP of this thread, due to the unusual representative voting mechanics of this game.
• Due to this game's referencing of a real-world voting mechanic, it's possible that real world politics will be brought up in the game. Don't do that at all. It can easily derail the game, offend people on your own team, and force the moderators to intervene. Consider it a house rule for this game just to keep things focused on what they should be.
• If you're new to the .org, here's a quick and dirty version of what to avoid: Insults, flaming, quoting/screenshotting your role PM, multiple accounts in one game, trolling, baiting, anything that wouldn't be appropriate sitting around your fiancee's family's dinner table and playing monopoly with them. Treat everyone in the game as an honored guest and, even though your aim is possibly to defeat them, remember we're all friends or we're all civil at the minimum.

It's looking like people are fine with starting sooner rather than later, and simply extending day or night phases through the holidays. At minimum I will add Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to whichever phase requires it, possibly the day after if it is a Day Phase, thus guaranteeing two in-game days outside of Eve and Xmas. I will also extend the phase that covers New Years Eve/Day, but I won't lock the thread during these extensions.

I will fill the game at 21 players, and anyone else that would like to get involved will be a reserve, and please note that I may actually use a reserve player, so keep an eye out for a PM at anytime. In general I will try to replace people in as early as possible.

Everybody's fine, but they sent us video of trees blowing around and stuff. Not my idea of a fun time, I guess you can relate!

My mom-in-law writes Tamil poetry. She's been known to talk about the "pure" Tamil of various areas that are definitely not Chennai, hah! I swear half the nouns my family uses are English words; that's the only reason I can occasionally tell the topic of conversation, other than a bunch of common phrases. It's not like I can carry on a conversation, sadly.
