Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
So now that we've had months of playing this game, what is your final verdict on the battle speeches.
Myself, I thought it was a bit of a shame that like in RTW they gave the starting factions varied speeches and the unlockable factions just basic ones. Having said that I do enjoy the battle speeches for the English, Venice etc. The Generals however do not sound as empassioned as they did in Rome. They don't sound like they are gearing their men up to fight and die which is a bit of a shame.

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
The speeches in M2TW are lame. RTW was so much better.

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
They have some funny one liners like that crack about the french being the best lovers in the world. Although i feel they lack something and having the same speeches for all the medditerranean factions gets irritating.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Only the initial playable factions have battle speeches worth anything. Factions like the Danes get a one-liner even before a major battle.
Also, the speaker of the end-battle speeches sounds anything but convinced at a victory for most factions, save the muslim ones.

I hate that guy. According to him, every single battle I fought will be remembered by all of Christendom. Even when I went out with only a General's Bodyguard to exterminate a single rebel crossbow unit. :inquisitive:

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
I agree in thinking RTW's were FAR better. In RTW, I felt inspired by the speeches... you really felt like a heroic general was imploring his army to victory. In MTW2, it feels much less epic and the generals seem a great deal less cocky.
One of the few things I liked more about RTW.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
There are some funny one liners as mentioned but as a whole I find them less than amusing and inspiring. Kinda lame. In many ways it seems CA just kinda walked through this game.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
they should have some in there that should make you want to jump out of your chair and leap through the computer screen and grab a weapon.
but alas i have not heard them.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
I laugh when a general with the bad speaker trait says uhhh amd ummm a bunch, good stuff.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
The Scots just say:
A) The English are cowards
B) The enemy is ugly
C) The enemy smells awful
D) The enemy are peasants that are not worthy of death.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
The crazy and bad speaker line of traits do offer some pretty funny speeches though

I belive they do .. but i like to keep my generals sane so i have never heard them :embarassed:

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
If your playing one of the starting factions (Without editing the text file and without beating the game one time) they are okay. But if you are playing the Danish or Scotland for example, they are way too short and pointless. True, I only played Rome for a little while and mostly MP but I do agree that the battle speeches were better there. It would be kinda nice if they fix this with a patch. Its really not that hard to get someone to speak on tape and disk space is plentyful nowdays.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
The only thing that i dont like that much is that it takes forever in sp for the camera to rotate around and for your general to start talking.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Yeah, I liked the RTW method where the general starts speakin after about 3-5 seconds instead of having to wait some 20 now.

Ah yes but it's the way they say it!!
I like the Scots voices best of all..Now who wants a second smile....

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
What are wrong with the battle speeches I think they're okay but I haven't played Rome, what's the difference between Rome and Medieval 2 speeches?

The General in Rome sounds like he's addressing the entire army and not just speaking to the guy next to him like in MTW2. Just sounds much more fiery and inspiring. Hell I was inspired to fight and die for the guys in Rome :laugh4:
-
Sv: Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Only problem I got is that they take too long to start.
I liked that in RTW that the speeches started right away instead of the waiting.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Never heard them in Mtw2. Liked some of the RTW ones. I see the delay comment and that may be why I did not hear them. Wanted to set up to fast. SadCat
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
I quite enjoy the French speeches, espically when they are fighting against the british, one time i listened in on to the speech and the general was saying how the british are smelly, have bad taste in food, women are ugly, and at the end he says they have bad teeth. :laugh4: That cracked me up like crazy
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
i just turn the speech off. it wasnt the battle speeches. that campaign map drove me nuts:wall:
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Well, the Danes bother me a bit, both in the campaign and battle. They just don't sound very Danish to me - I think they even say "Da" on the campaign map when you select them. More of an Eastern European accent than a Danish (or even Scandinavian) one, really.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
I wonder if any modders could figure out how to incorporate our own .wav files to add to the speech engine. I wouldn't mind hearing some quotes from Braveheart every now and again.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Just like many have said, the RTW speeches were largely better.
Two reasons :
1) First and foremost, the Rome's generals truly gave the impression they were bolstering their troops before a battle. They were talking powerfully and loudly, with a truly inspiring voice.
It was inspiring and gave a lot of immersion.
MTW2's ones feel like the general have a regular conversation with the guy next to him.
2) Be it a quick skirmish or a decisive, world-shattering one, the speeches were often adequates, to the point and descriptive. MTW2 seems to try to be more "funny" (depends on what you find funny I guess), and ends up completely feeling out of place when you think "epic battle".
Even when related to the battle at hand, they feel like jokes and caricatures, not general speeches.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Although in general they aren't as realistic and passionate as they could be, my biggest beef with them is the immense lack of balance. I don't think I've ever heard a battle speech when playing as the Turks, and many factions get simple one-liners. The first 5 factions and Scotland get some decent ones, but that's about it.

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Feck - my favourite trait!
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
"dear and loyal soldiers you will all die today and somone else will have your women, children and lands. But do not let this discourage you, and if you turn and run i will not hold it against you since i will probably be the first to run."
:eeeek:

some of them are quite witty.

I think I had 1 or 2 as turks. Both single lines. But then none for like, 10 battles, before I gave up waiting again. I was beginning to think I'd imagined the ones I did get....Maybe I did....
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
I had a lengthy speech off of Count Bernardo, the Milanese faction heir, who had 7 command...
Might be partly to do with the command stars of the general? Or not?

And FYI, the length of the speech is related to the unit count for the battle: the more troops present, the more remarks your general will make concerning the coming battle. This made the actual process of writing everything quite difficult, because there was no single set template for the remark elements. I had to make allowance for the fact that a particular speech element might not always be in the same place and have predictable elements before and after it.

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Hail to thee, noble Captain Fishpants.
Some of them are marvelously naughty, well done!
One thing though, in future could speeches be made to play during the setup phase? Quicker getting to a battle without missing the speech.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Never even realised this game had retained the speeches... Be it because they don't work for me, or more probably I've always been so hasty to "begin deployment" that the hero never had the chance to talk.

Well then you surely want to tell me why my Danish general says a one liner even when 2 stacks of 20 are battling each other while my English general will give 4-5 lines of text when only a total of 10 units are on the field?
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions

The 5 starter factions have more lines. I think Captain Fishpants was just saying that how long they go on for depends on how many men are in battle.
Both things were also true of RTW, AFAIK.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
" men hold fast until the enemy appears over that ridge. then run for your lives.":charge:

Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Not really sapi, I remember all factions in RTW having a host of battle speeches, not just the romans.

That was a decision taken in Oz. No idea why, nor whether it's going to be changed in the next patch. Sorry. Like mostly-beloved children everywhere, they don't write and don't phone their parents now that they're off doing stuff for themselves... sniff.

I think the "minor factions" all default to one-liner remarks, although the plan was (and speeches were written) for more speech chunks than were recorded.

Sadly that was also true of Rome: Total War. The three great Roman factions always seemed to say much more about the faction(s) they were fighting and the enemy's number compared to the other culture groups such as the Greeks and Barbarians. Also, unfortunately, some groups had "clone" speeches such as the Egyptians, Easterners and Carthaginians which, sadly, removed some variety. Although I do not own M2:TW, I would beleive that, from what I have seen, that the speeches have much more variety. Yet if the variety is of higher quality or not remains for me to see.

There is more variety of languages/cultures in M2tw so I would assume so.
Like theres:
English
French
Spanish/Portugal
Eastern European etc
Not many factions share same accents so I assume not same speaches.

In localized (i.e. not English) versions only the faction which matches the localization (the HRE in Germany, for example) gets a full speech, all other factions just get one-liners.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
I've given up hope for the Turks, I wait and wait, and it feels like they'll have a speech maybe 1 out of every 5 or 6 battles, and it's always one line, maybe two.

Give us a finger, and we'll demand the arm... It's just so sad that there isn't more speeches for the "other" factions. It was true in Rome with only the romans getting speeches, and it's true in M2TW with only the 5 first factions getting speeches...
I was really, really hoping to have speeches for my turks after I had reconciled with not having speeches for my parthians...
Oh well. It always seems like my favourite factions get the boot somewhere... At least I now have my ottomans again!

In the spanish version we got full and specific speeches for hre, italians, spanish, english, etc. It's true that when you play another factions just like danish, russians or muslims, speeches are one-liner mostly, but at least they tell something to their troops... But when you play French, their generals and captains are mute No speeches at all.

i dont think Islamic factions are minor, but where are there speeches?

Every faction besides England, France, HRE, Spain and Milan are "minor".
The "minor" factions are the ones you have to unlock.
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
Minor factions give one liners all the time, although they do at least say something.
Would've been fun to hear the Scots talk like in Braveheart 'They make take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!' Or Muslims factions blabbering about the 'infidelic pigs'.
Yesterday my English general was muttering stuff about 'Is my wife over there? Have you met her?...If she there with the enemy we're all doomed men! DO YOU WANT A FIGHT?!'
-
Re: Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions
My favorite speech was from Rome... I took 3 units to take out a single brigand unit, the pre-battle speech was...
"There they are! Get them!"
