    Default Battle Speeches. Your Conclusions

So now that we've had months of playing this game, what is your final verdict on the battle speeches.

Myself, I thought it was a bit of a shame that like in RTW they gave the starting factions varied speeches and the unlockable factions just basic ones. Having said that I do enjoy the battle speeches for the English, Venice etc. The Generals however do not sound as empassioned as they did in Rome. They don't sound like they are gearing their men up to fight and die which is a bit of a shame.

The speeches in M2TW are lame. RTW was so much better.

They have some funny one liners like that crack about the french being the best lovers in the world. Although i feel they lack something and having the same speeches for all the medditerranean factions gets irritating.

Only the initial playable factions have battle speeches worth anything. Factions like the Danes get a one-liner even before a major battle.

Also, the speaker of the end-battle speeches sounds anything but convinced at a victory for most factions, save the muslim ones.

I hate that guy. According to him, every single battle I fought will be remembered by all of Christendom. Even when I went out with only a General's Bodyguard to exterminate a single rebel crossbow unit.

I agree in thinking RTW's were FAR better. In RTW, I felt inspired by the speeches... you really felt like a heroic general was imploring his army to victory. In MTW2, it feels much less epic and the generals seem a great deal less cocky.

One of the few things I liked more about RTW.

There are some funny one liners as mentioned but as a whole I find them less than amusing and inspiring. Kinda lame. In many ways it seems CA just kinda walked through this game.

they should have some in there that should make you want to jump out of your chair and leap through the computer screen and grab a weapon.

but alas i have not heard them.

    The Scots just say:
    A) The English are cowards
    B) The enemy is ugly
    C) The enemy smells awful
    D) The enemy are peasants that are not worthy of death.

The crazy and bad speaker line of traits do offer some pretty funny speeches though

If your playing one of the starting factions (Without editing the text file and without beating the game one time) they are okay. But if you are playing the Danish or Scotland for example, they are way too short and pointless. True, I only played Rome for a little while and mostly MP but I do agree that the battle speeches were better there. It would be kinda nice if they fix this with a patch. Its really not that hard to get someone to speak on tape and disk space is plentyful nowdays.

The only thing that i dont like that much is that it takes forever in sp for the camera to rotate around and for your general to start talking.

Yeah, I liked the RTW method where the general starts speakin after about 3-5 seconds instead of having to wait some 20 now.

What are wrong with the battle speeches I think they're okay but I haven't played Rome, what's the difference between Rome and Medieval 2 speeches?

The General in Rome sounds like he's addressing the entire army and not just speaking to the guy next to him like in MTW2. Just sounds much more fiery and inspiring. Hell I was inspired to fight and die for the guys in Rome

Only problem I got is that they take too long to start.
I liked that in RTW that the speeches started right away instead of the waiting.

Never heard them in Mtw2. Liked some of the RTW ones. I see the delay comment and that may be why I did not hear them. Wanted to set up to fast. SadCat

I quite enjoy the French speeches, espically when they are fighting against the british, one time i listened in on to the speech and the general was saying how the british are smelly, have bad taste in food, women are ugly, and at the end he says they have bad teeth. That cracked me up like crazy

Well, the Danes bother me a bit, both in the campaign and battle. They just don't sound very Danish to me - I think they even say "Da" on the campaign map when you select them. More of an Eastern European accent than a Danish (or even Scandinavian) one, really.

I wonder if any modders could figure out how to incorporate our own .wav files to add to the speech engine. I wouldn't mind hearing some quotes from Braveheart every now and again.

Just like many have said, the RTW speeches were largely better.
    Two reasons :

    1) First and foremost, the Rome's generals truly gave the impression they were bolstering their troops before a battle. They were talking powerfully and loudly, with a truly inspiring voice.
It was inspiring and gave a lot of immersion.
MTW2's ones feel like the general have a regular conversation with the guy next to him.

    2) Be it a quick skirmish or a decisive, world-shattering one, the speeches were often adequates, to the point and descriptive. MTW2 seems to try to be more "funny" (depends on what you find funny I guess), and ends up completely feeling out of place when you think "epic battle".
Even when related to the battle at hand, they feel like jokes and caricatures, not general speeches.
If violence didn't solve your problem... well, you just haven't been violent enough.

Although in general they aren't as realistic and passionate as they could be, my biggest beef with them is the immense lack of balance. I don't think I've ever heard a battle speech when playing as the Turks, and many factions get simple one-liners. The first 5 factions and Scotland get some decent ones, but that's about it.
