DotA: Death of the Ancients

For those who don't know of dota, it is a whole series of warcraft 3 use map setting maps that have 2 teams of up to 5 hero battle it out along with their creeps as they try to destroy the opposing team's ancient.

Any members here play dota? For this who have warcraft 3 but don't play it, I strongly suggest you get the latest map 6.43b from here and go play some custom games online.

My favorite hero happens to be Azwraith, Phantom Lancer. I know they nerfed his images down to 15 secs, but he is IMO one of the best if not the best pushers in the game. Azwraith + Manta = Dead Towers

No offense intended, but imo it's one of the worst maps (and definitely one that attracts the worst players) around

For High Damage high regen go Witch Doctor. Base damage is incredible.

Well, I have to agree with sapi here. I played a lot of Aeon kind of map for W3 and W3FT, and DotA is probably the worst one.
Badly designed, poorly balanced, filled with 12 year old idiots. The only interesting feature is crafting items. But then, everyone tries to craft the same overpowered items, so it turns out to be kinda pointless.

Not nearly as much fun as Tides of Blood (another Aeon kind of map) or the good old Europa Universalis and Lord of the Ring maps.

Unbalanced...only because everyone plays -em.

Or also, unbalanced because the whole game is based upon overpowered skill, items and heroes rather than teamplay and strategy.

Most people try to avoid playing with their allies, as it slow down XP rates. You just wait behind your creeps and cast a spell from times to times, until you have enough money to buy some flawed item. Rinse and repeat until you're powerful enough to one-shot a tower or another hero. End of the game.

Hmm...I seem to have made a mistake in the title, can anyone fix it for me?

As for the map, it is imbalanced in some heroes, but those overpowered ones do get nerfed in newer versions and the map isn't that imbalanced.

If you want to play against half decent people, go play TDA games where you have to prove that you are a respectable player to get in.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be patronising, but how is attempting to join a community that discriminates based on skill for a single map going to get you with half decent people?

If you want to play with nice people, play with your mates...or play another game...

In the dota community, there is a very large problem with people either purposefully ruining the game or more commonly, leavers. Public 5v5 games easily last from 45-90 minutes so lots of people just leave in the middle of the game most of the time ruining the game. If you can play TDA games, that means that you are not a leaver nor purposefully ruin games and that you are at least not completely new to the game.

If you complain that there are too many stupid 10 year olds playing the games, it is the same for almost every online game with starcraft and WoW to name a few.

Anyway, most of your "complaints" show that you haven't actually played it, or got the hang of it. Because if you did, you'll know it's anything but "You just wait behind your creeps and cast a spell from times to times, until you have enough money to buy some flawed item."

Well, DotA is one of the top modifications close to perfection. The author gets a huge feedback and never falls behind in updating the map.

Actually.. Everyone around the world is too fond of DotA! At least.. That what shows if you participate in the DotA community.

@LeftEyeNine: This will sound silly.. But I don't have Warcraft III TFT to play DotA!! :P I just play it on LAN.. Nothing is better than playing a dude who thinks he's "UBER" and then watching him swear to death after he loses.. ~;)

The dota community is quite large too with easily around 1000 users browsing the page at any time

Thing is, I actually played it. Firstly a while ago (what was it ? 3 or 4 years ago at least, when the first versions of the map were released) and quite honestly, I already thought it was quite poor and blank at the time (as in, there was already Aeon maps with cooler design, better balance, more original heroes, etc.), the only thing I actually liked was a character that had spell who were quite powerful but sometimes lead to weird situations (he summoned a random hostile creature rather than the friendly elemental he was supposed to).

Then, a few months ago, a friend of mine who is still stuck at playing on Battlenet (while normal people have moved to WoW) told me "Haven't you heard about DotA ? It's really great" and so on.
So, I reinstalled Warcraft 3 and TFT, downloaded the latest version of the map, and tried the map. I played dozens of games either with my friend and his team or with random people, and never ever did I think "OMG, 'dis is so much fun"*.

Currently, I still wondering why people prefer(ed) this crap over Tides of Blood and the billion of other Aeon that were way better than DotA.

*Oddly, all these game would be rather well described by "casting a spell from times to times until you have enough money to buy/craft some overpowered item"

Have a quick question though, I can understand why Australian and New Zealand users go on the U.S. West server, but why do so many from Singapore come when they have an Asia server?

Probably the viral effect - friends had already gone to US West, so they did etc.

iirc it's like wow and they're all based in the US anyway...

But the thing is that in dota, most hosters only allow people from a certain area to join due to lag issuees. For example, hosters in us will only allow us/canada and people from singapore will take quite a while to find a join they could join that is us.

There are however lots of singapore games which is quite infuriating as I constantly join a game only to realize that it is a singapore one

Nope, that's because 99% of Asian server players are Koreans, speak and play exclusively in Korean language. No wonder the rest of Asia players look for server elsewhere...

Sapi- It is an issue since sometimes over 1/2 of the dota games are hosted by people from singapore and if you take into account australia and new zealond, maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the dota games on west is not hosted from North America

I went on an arcade rampage about two months ago and quickly rose to become number 4, but now it seems that I am stuck and cannot get the 40 more points necessary to beat Faust and become third.

A few years ago my favorite hero was Fletcher, then Queen of Pain. Now its between Doom Bringer, Magnataur and Axe. :2thumbsup:

DoTA is a phenomenon here in the Philippines. There are LAN games being played all the time in computer shops everywhere. Me and my buddies often play with each other so we seldom experience the usual problems at Battle.Net (leavers, poor players who ruin the game, etc...).

The earlier post said something about a lot of games over at the North American server hosted by Singapore players. That's because the Asian server is choke full of Koreans, and they don't play the English version. That leaves the rest of us (Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia....) out and so we're forced to head over to the US servers. I've only played over Bnet a few times though, and this was the case then. I guess it still holds true. :laugh4:
