Final Report:
Senators of the Roman Empire. This year my term as Megas has ended. When I took up the position Civil War and strife were on the horizon and threatened the integrity of our Empire. Being loyal to one party in this conflict has caused fear in many that partisan politics would lead to even further destruction from the Civil War. I hope that I have proven through my actions that those fears were not true.
All recruitment done by me this term went to waging war against our foreign neighbours, namely Venice and the Seljuks. While the conflict between the Basileus and the Order of St. John has stalled our advance against the Seljuk Turks, I want to recommend Methodios Tagaris for taking down the last Fatamid stronghold.
The war against Venice has started out successfully. Although I must admit that the attack could have been conducted faster. We have taken two of their settlements and are about to besiege two more. I am confident that the next Megas term will see the complete assimilation of our former vassals. This should be enough to fulfill Edict 6.1.
The one thing that held me back most during the last term was our lack of funds. Our Cities have reached sizes where building projects require at least half of our total income. Under such conditions low taxes will get us nowhere. Not only is this hurting our Empire now, but in the long run the lack of development in our Cities will present a bill that is even higher. I strongly discourage the tax policies as they are now applied by the House of Asteri and hope that they will change their mind soon.
With our financial situation in mind I have embarked on building places to trade in our Cities. I am proud to announce that almost every City within the Empire that can support it now boasts a proper 'Market'. Furthermore I have opened new lucrative trades that provide the Empire with Ivory and other luxuries. There are still more worthy trade goods to be found at the far corners of our Empire and the next Megas would do well to exploit them.
I am not getting any younger and probably won't see the end of the next Megas term. There are still many unresolved conflicts within our Empire and without and I would be happy to see some of them resolved before the end of my lifetime.
It has been an honour to serve the Senate of Rome.
Your respectful servant,
Pavlos Chrysovergos
