I'm using Avira antivirus right now, it does a good job and its free. Don't think you can really beat it, myself.

But I'll echo others; DON"T use Norton. Not only does it cost cash, but it takes forever to scan, and to top it off, Norton is the base anti-virus the majority of skilled virus makers test against(this coming from my hacker friend, who of all people would know), so Norton is actually more susceptible than most of the free anti-viruses.
It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then, the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.

After hearing some of the good comments about Spy bot Search and Destroy, i decided to download it myself, as i realised i didnt have any of that kind of protection on my computer, i have AVG free, i doesnt seem to say check computer anywhere, so ill just leave it, but i agree with some people here, i hate that McAfee crap, i wouldnt reccomend it, just goes on forever, Im not sure about my opinion on Norton, with my laptop i already had a interent protections on, i cant remember what it is called though But i installed Norton so i could have double the protection

I am currently checking my computer with SB S&D, and it is doing a decent job, no problems yet...

That's what I chose to download from a link here in this thread, and I'm greatly satisfied with it.
    (1) scans thoroughly
    (2) scans quickly (about 7 min per scan on my current machine)
    (3) like you said,it's free!
Can't go wrong in those areas.

    Advice much appreciated,guys & gal!

Glad we could help... even if I didn't suggest Avira...

I use nod32, it has satisfied me, and I've used many antivirus programs before. McAfee, Karpersky, Panda, Norton... (the last one doesn't count at all ) The setback is that you have to pay for it, though you can test it for 30 days.

That was actually directed at everyone in general who offered suggestions, not any one individual.
I appreciate everyone's responses, whether suggesting a specific program or just testifying that a specific program works well or not.
Avira was just the one I chose out of all suggestions.

    hi there, darlings--guys and gals--
There was a very good bit of advice in a computer mag: they tested plenty of anti-virus programs. The final verdict:
    1. There is NOT one program that could eliminate 100% of the viruses--you have to use 2 or more programs to get plenty (and again, not 100%) of protection.
    2. Their test indicated that the best mix is to use 3 programs: AVG free, Ad-Aware, and a 3rd one (an anti-spyware) which, if you would magnanimously forgive me, I have forgotten the name--but it started with letter A also [how I remember was the 3 A's]. I use the forst 2; I don't use the third because I forgot, and that magazine I read it from, tragically, was lost.
Anyways, that's right--NEVER use Norton. None of us here does. Norton is very far from 100% effective, but it treats ALL of the other anti-virus programs as the enemy...couldn't coexixt nor make any allies anywhere.
Well, till here for now, beautiful people. May you have straight arrows and sharp swords, but surrounded by pretty princesses and gallant heroes in your Total War games.
