Welcome to the .Org zalalzabob konsorbud
These symbols appear when a battle was fought on that site which resulted in an Heroic Victory for one side/a Crushing Defeat for the other.

When this happens the two swords appear, and hovering over them gives some background on who was in charge and the year/season it happened.

Heroic Victories/Crushing Defeats usually occur when an army wins when the odds are against them by a fairly large amount (3:1 for example). It can help if the winning force takes minimal losses also while the foes take as many losses as possible. If the odds were dramatically against the victor though, this often doesn't matter too much.

The odds for your battles are shown on the blue and red bar in the centre of the pre-battle scroll. The type of victory (Heroic Victory, Clear Victory, Average Victory, Close Victory) or defeat (Crushing Defeat, Clear Defeat, Average Defeat, Close Defeat) are shown on the scroll which appears on the battle's conclusion.

Do they have to be Heroic Victory on one side and Crushing Defeat on the other, or does it only have to be Heroic Victory or Crushing Defeat?

It quite really work quite like that Quirinus. If one side gets one sort of victory, the other side get's the opposite type of defeat. For example:

If the victor gets a Heroic Victory, the loser gets a Crushing Defeat
If the victor gets a Clear Victory, the loser gets a Clear Defeat
If the victor gets an Average Victory, the loser gets a Average Defeat
If the victor gets a Close Victory, the loser gets a Close Defeat
If one side gets a Draw, then the other side gets a Draw

It's impossible to mix and match different types of victory and defeat - for example, the victor could not get a Heroic Victory, while the loser gets an Average Defeat. Likewise the loser could not get a Close Defeat, while the Victor gains a Clear Victory.

I see...... but the famous battle marker doesn't appear every time a Heroic Victory happens, right? Are there other conditions for the famous battle marker to appear?

Every time I had a heroic victory, I had a marker. It doesn't appear if it's a siege battle though. Shame because most of my heroic victories are siege battles.

Same here - the key issue with showing the marker for sieges is that there is a city on that tile already, and placing a sword there make accessing both the city and the victory details more difficult.
